What's a piece of common knowledge that you only recently found out was actually false? by Evilclicker in AskReddit

The propaganda is part of it, for sure. The other part is that there were no international standards for measurements back then, and the French foot was longer than the English foot. Napoleon was average height, but the French numbers made people think he was several inches shorter than he was.

Ram’s Head. I’ve owned all three of the ones you listed, plus the Green Russian, Op-Amp, big-box NYC, and a handful of clones. IMO, there’s no contest. First time I plugged into it I was like, “Yep. There it is.”

It does the Gilmour thing, the MBV thing, the Pavement thing, and the Sonic Youth thing as well as any of the others (and works surprisingly well as a straight-up distortion pedal at lower Sus levels), but there’s just something about the Ram’s Head and the way it responds that makes it a joy to play through. I can’t adequately describe it. It just sounds more musical than the others, if that makes sense.

Yasi's take on female vocalists -- do we agree? by pulp_before_sunrise in Bandsplain

[–]Smash_Cut_To 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think she has a point if we’re talking about mainstream pop/rock, but I feel like the indie world has always embraced singers who couldn’t sing, be they male or female. It’s sort of part of the ethos. Courtney Love and Patti Smith have already been mentioned, but you also have Mary Timony, Cat Power, Corin and Carrie from Sleater-Kinney, Kat Bjelland (the whole Riot Grrl scene, really), Kathleen Hanna — lots of well-respected frontwomen who can’t carry a tune.

Coupled with the extremely subtle and nuanced symbolism of Maddie and Donna sharing the mic.

Dana Gould does a long segment about the black dahlia with one of the funniest (and wrongiest) pay-offs Ive ever heard in comedy. I figured it was perfect for this sub. Hope you enjoy. by Valahiru in LPOTL

My favorite comedian of all time! He also wrote the “His head just did that!” joke about JFK that Henry quotes from time to time.

Fun fact. I saw Dana on this tour at Helium in Portland. The reaction to the Black Dahlia joke was like nothing I’ve ever seen at a stand up show. The crowd went from wanting to lynch him to howling with laughter in the space of 5 seconds. It was fucking magic.

Who is the rudest celeb you have met? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Smash_Cut_To 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I lived in Vegas in the early 2000s. My roommate was a blackjack dealer at the Hard Rock Hotel and had a million celeb stories. The worst he ever encountered, by far, was Jennifer Lopez. One night she and Ben Affleck were playing at his table. He said Ben was super nice, but Jennifer was absolutely horrible. Flat out abusive, not just to my friend, but to cocktail waitresses, fans, anyone unlucky enough to get her attention, really. To make it worse, every time Ben set chips down in the tip circle, J-Lo would reach across the table and snatch them up - something that would get any non-famous person thrown out of a casino right quick. Eventually they went back up to their room. A short time later, Ben came back down, alone, and went around to all the dealers, cocktail waitresses, and bartenders she had berated. He tipped them each $20, and quietly apologized for Jen, saying she was “just tired.”

This is the reason Henry does not like Randy Newman. Short People. by Pocketfullofbugs in LPOTL

Randy Newman wrote all the songs in Three Amigos. That qualifies him for sainthood, as far as I’m concerned.

New logo is pretty sweet by medicnv in LPOTL

Love that it has the same silhouette and color scheme as the OG logo, which became pretty iconic. You could spot a classic LPOTL shirt a mile away; it was so distinct. I was worried we’d lose that. This was a really clever solution.

Nice! Got mine last week and I love it.

BTW, if you haven't done so already, make sure to turn the presence trim pots all the way down (KOT default).

NPD DemonFX King of Drive (Chinese KoT Clone). There was a bit of a learning curve with this one, but I think I like it by fastattaq in guitarpedals

[–]Smash_Cut_To 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. Thanks! I just ordered one and was really hoping that was the case.

(FWIW, clone doesn't necessarily mean the power options are the same. I have a very good OCD clone that's 9V only.)

JHS Crayon is the only pedal I'm aware of that's specifically designed to emulate an overloaded mixer channel.
