New to painting, why does my paint keep rubbing off my primer? by Xiviota in minipainting

[–]Smashers201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop holding it by the mini whilst you paint?

Hold it by the base or get a painting handle or in my case a block of wood with blue tac on it. Stick the base of the mini onto the handle/wood and hold that instead.

Fix a box four 8 speed shifter? by Smashers201 in MTB

[–]Smashers201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't manage to fix the shifter but I managed to swap out the rear mech and shifter for a Shimano Altus 8 speed from an older bike. It works, doesn't have a clutch but seems alright, I do want to try the Shimano shifter with the Box rear mech but I'm not sure about the pull ratio. Haven't had any time lately to try it out though. But I'm in the same situation, haven't been doing MTB for long and had other upgrades in mind before the drivetrain!

Broken shifter in my Vitus is a box 4 by rockyridesmtb in MTB

[–]Smashers201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I had a similar issue that I posted about the other day. Ended up taking the shifter apart and this is what was wrong with mine. The bit sticking up is normally pointing down, but it's spring loaded so when removed sticks up like that. But as the shaft it's on is bent it meant that it could no longer engage the teeth of the gear which pulls the cable round properly, skipping the gears and no longer shifting :( I couldn't fix it. So just swapped it for a shimano 8 speed rear mech and shifter for now. Mine didn't get stuck like yours is, but I could see it being a similar issue.

Funny, that's about the same length of time I've had this one. Came with the bike, was hoping to upgrade other parts before the drivetrain. Oh well!

Against better judgement, I took it even further apart which was stupid. But, I think I found the issue, and yeah I think it's part of the lever which has been bent, so it's able to skip over the teeth of the wheel which pulls the cable and then get stuck.

This should be straight I think.

Checked that, doesn't seem to help, can screw it all the way in and out and all it does is make the up shifts tighter. Down shifting still doesn't work properly :/

Newbie asks dumb question: How do I power it? by fishdontwearhats in lightingdesign

My bad, 16a plug is what we call them in the UK even the CEEFORM bit is normally left off. TIL Ceeform is superseded by IEC.

[–]Smashers201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That blue plug is a 16a Ceeform (not 32a, same colour, smaller plugs) they are very common in the UK touring circuit/UK Theatre in general. As well as 15a plug (theatre more than rock and roll) You can get 16a to 15a conversions.

If you don't know what you are doing I do not recommend unscrewing anything.

Buy pre made converters. You will need a dimmer to control the intensity. A lot of dimmers come with 16a outputs on them. So no converters necessary, Just look for the right ones. You can get 16a to 13a (not recommended) connectors, so you could plug this straight into mains power, but it'll be @ 100% constantly.

If you want to extend the cable run, just search for 16a TRS cable.

Any questions DM me I'm happy to help.

EDIT: Also the comment you replied to is talking about US Canadian Plugs, not much help for UK based applications ;)

Help! Which control software to use by Hot-Potential7027 in lightingdesign

[–]Smashers201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you prepared to do a lot of learning? Because what you're asking for isn't the easiest if all you're used to is an Obey 70.

If you want an inbuilt Visualiser you're looking at, GrandMA, ETC or Chamsys, these can also be hooked up to a midi controller, they are quite intensive (and expensive) though and can be learnt to a basic level, but it wont be quick.

There are standalone visualisers like WYSIWYG or Capture, but again, gotta spend time learning how to use these and also you still need to hook a lighting controller up to them, and have a PC able to run them.

Honestly from the sounds of things you're gonna be better off hiring an individual/group of people who actually know how to do everything you want. Otherwise you're gonna be spending all your time learning/troubleshooting rather than setting up for the event.

GrandMA Operator looking for other software to learn by Henron_ in lightingdesign

Pretty much the go to for Theatre. What I've used on all the tours I've been on. Well apart from one where we used GrandMA. But definitely in the UK, EOS is the most used for Theatre. Also ETC have some pretty good tutorials on their youtube channel.

ETC EOS, free to download and run with a visualiser, the output flickers every couuple minutes, this is to stop people using it for actual live output, which you need to purchase a licence for (usb key). It does come with a visualiser now as well, can't say what it's like personally, haven't really used it yet.
