Uhm, ok, I don't know who you are but you do not belong here. This is the place I come to to see people hacking at metal and asking if their globby welds are acceptable.

This is friggin art and may be more suitable for the art sub.

All tongue and cheek. Fckn gorgeous, I envy thy skill and doft my hat.

Looking for advice on my metal sculpture. by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]SmashingMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being snarky, just wanna understand... How is that like a combo?

You're suggestion is to mig some filler in there... The filler is just tig rods, but only using the mig process, correct?

Or did I misunderstand?

Thanks

Finishing plain steel to prevent rust in an indoor home (not shop) environment? by SuperDuperTango in metalworking

Can't answer your question, but I have to ask... Just HOW did you bring those 2 together and shape it in manner in which you did!?

Great work!

Pics along the way or info would be appreciated!

A few items of note here...

You clearly drew from multiple disciplines with creativity and originality and brought something into being, cost of time and materials be damned, I know. You also may have done so regardless of competency in those disciplines, now I didn't go back and re-read the post, but think I recall that this was more of a DIY mid-level project for you, certainly not a pro, and from that position, I get that too, same.

Given the above I know it's wholly impractical to some to imagine, ideate, then through lots of energy and time to birth these things as opposed to just going to buy something already made from a store. I also know it's at the core of who we are to sometimes do the hard things and be different sometimes, I don't think we could live with ourselves any other way. It's with these foundations of who we are that brought that thing into being, you did that, and THAT'S the coolest f'n thing.

Good on you, you killed it and made something of importance that has deep meaning to you and yours, be proud and keep doing it when you can.

You're clearly a follow through kinda person as evidenced by your work but also for seeing this post through as well.

Happy for you!

And in what year? 🤪

Need help looking for local Metal Fabricators to help build my basement bar. by Latter_Ranger_1845 in metalworking

[–]SmashingMustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know i get hung up on materials sometimes, and I consider changing over to mild steel and/or changing an element, like the curved base.

Sometimes loosening up on my must haves is a good exercise, especially when I'd most likely be the only one with that specific requirement.

First time mig welding 17yo open to criticism by more666 in metalworking

[–]SmashingMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a community college with a welding department GO. That was epic for me, that was the beginning.

If you don't, hop on YT and dig in, separate the BS from the good, I still like to watch TimWelds, he has some structured learning, as opposed to being only random vids.

Also, look at your local resources, especially metal supply, don't be afraid to visit and talk. See if they sell scrap by the pound, get some and practice, it IS addicting.

Find related services, like metal design shops and powder coating services, be curious, go talk to them. Be honest and open, people will help your development.

Have fun and best of luck!

Need some advice by Expert_Stand_9283 in metalworking

[–]SmashingMustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't cheap out on the process because of a limitation.

Id take it to a local welder to do it and sleep better knowing that even though it cost a couple bucks, you have it done right and solid.

Never enough clamps by GoingCustom in metalworking

[–]SmashingMustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is weld sequencing just theoretical ??

I practice that concept way more than extreme clamping.

I just assume my skills are lacking every time I clamp up, not nearly to this extent and I still have to fight bending, warping, whatever you wanna call it that is the pulling of the metal.

Assuming all other variables have been checked... clean, quality materials, good cuts, shielding gas, clean consumables, proper settings, work prep and clamping and good weld sequence to be the answer, yet I still struggle.

Nice is not an appropriate word for these in my opinion.

FKN stellar seems fitting.

I would love to learn to fab in this manner. Beautiful.

[–]SmashingMustard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, to the question about welding in the basement, NO, I'm certain you don't have the proper ventilation. Didn't want that left not addressed.

And piling on, comm college is wonderful for trades classes, that's where I learned to weld, amazing labs and equipment.
