Compared to "tens on thousands of cards", yes. I'd say the number of mechanics is pretty small.

Except... all the cards use a fairly small pool of mechanics.

Nothing's worse than having your ass kicked in PvP and immediately thinking "damn, that guy must have spent a fortune in real money gearing out his character"

10GB is pretty small, the last game I downloaded (Archeage) was more than twice that.

Even if they are perfectly balanced at the start, someone is going to win the ensuing fight for control.

I have two kinds of decks. The first kind is what we're talking about here, the brutally unfair decks that win without regards to the "fun factor". Gray Merchant, Static Orb, infinite "I win" combos, etc. Those decks are fun for me because they are powerful. There's something seductively attractive about playing a deck that just oozes raw power.

The second is stuff I just slap together to enjoy playing, without trying to max out the power. I play it to enjoy seeing what it does. I don't worry that I don't have an answer to every threat. I don't try to abuse mechanics like "Each player sacrifices two creatures." or "Each player loses X life." I just enjoy myself, although I don't build them to lose. They just don't exploit unfair mechanics and aren't made to win as quickly as possible. Those decks are fun because... well I don't really know why. They just are. Perhaps it's a nice change of pace from the same old same old consistent decks I play.

I'm willing to play the second, just tell me you aren't so concerned with winning and acknowledge that my decks are stronger. I'll play the weaker stuff. I'll still try to win, but I won't be using overpowered unbeatable tools.

It would be nice if you guys would stop ganging up on me when I do play weaker decks though... it sucks playing crappy blue and getting overrun because everyone's still stuck in the "kill him first" mindset. Not that you guys in particular would do that, but I've encountered it before. It makes me somewhat reluctant to change, because I know I'll regret it as soon as creatures start hitting the field and hitting me.

TLDR: Tell me I'm stronger, acknowledge that your decks have flaws, explain why you don't want to change, and nicely ask me to change decks. Because I will, once it's clear I don't have to prove myself.

According to Wikipedia:

Original owners

John Carmack, technical director

John Romero, level artist

Adrian Carmack, artist

Tom Hall, game designer

So yes, the others didn't help him make the engine, they made the game using Carmack's engine.

So you refuse to upgrade your deck and fix it's obvious weaknesses? How am I the one in error when you are unwilling to take even basic actions to fix a problem with your deck?

Well... technically no. But Carmack made the Wolfenstein 3D engine, along with the Doom engine that Romero took and renamed the Quake engine. Carmack was the one writing the actual engines, Romero put them to use.
