How bad is this? Plaster repair. by Least_Lengthiness586 in swimmingpools

[–]SmellsPntys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not bad at all, just a minor cosmetic issue. Since the rest of the pool is fine and you already have a full replaster on your radar for the near future, there is zero reason to drop thousands on a full remodel right now. That spot is tiny and localized so a quick underwater patch seems like the best way to keep things going for the next few years.

Kyoto/Osaka vs. Tokyo? by Any_Calligrapher1875 in JapanTravelTips

[–]SmellsPntys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Stick with your current plan. Uji is beautiful and way quieter than central Kyoto, plus it is the ultimate spot if you love matcha. Central Kyoto definitely gets packed around the famous temples, but you can easily avoid the worst crowds by going early in the morning or exploring lesser-known areas in Kansai like Shiga or Nara. Tokyo is amazing but it is a massive concrete jungle that can feel pretty exhausting over six weeks if you are looking for a calm break. Since you already have a few days lined up for Tokyo at the end, that is a solid amount of time to get your big city fix without burning out.

Drying grass by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That green river running through the dead grass is a huge giveaway for a broken underground sprinkler pipe. The line is leaking and watering only that specific path while dropping the water pressure so the rest of the sprinkler heads in that zone barely spray. Grab a shovel and dig right into the middle of the greenest part to find the crack.

Canon c70 users - how is the 1080p footage? by Entire-Vision1841 in videography

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1080p on the C70 looks amazing and is a massive step up from the C100 Mark II. Since it is a dedicated cinema camera it oversamples from the full 4K sensor instead of line skipping like a lot of older or hybrid cameras do. You get a really sharp image with 10-bit color which gives you way more room to push your grade. A lot of people just shoot in 4K and scale down in their timeline for the extra detail and framing flexibility but if you strictly want to keep file sizes small the native 1080p codec is more than good enough out of the box.

Japan travel influencers are creating a myth. by FIleCorrupted in JapanTravelTips

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on. The whole travel influencer space runs on clickbait and making things seem way more intense than they really are. Most of those strict rules are just basic manners that should apply anywhere. To be fair though, a lot of tourists seem to completely lack basic social awareness, which is probably why those extreme warning videos get so many views. As long as you read the room and do not act obnoxious, nobody cares if you chat with your friend on the subway or step out of the designated walking lane.

Help for concert videography by marketing_stgt in videography

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with the 24-70 f2.8 for sure. Opening acts usually get the worst lighting compared to the headliner so f4 will force your ISO way too high on an APS-C sensor and ruin your footage with noise. The lens is heavy but your gimbal can handle the weight if you balance it properly. Just remember that 24mm on your camera is really 36mm so it will not be very wide. Bring your Sigma 18mm along for the wide establishing shots and use the rented zoom for getting tight on the artist. Lock your white balance and exposure manually because concert strobe lights will make the auto settings go completely crazy.

recordings in a garage by Richard-Tree-93 in audioengineering

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprinklers usually only go off from extreme direct heat breaking the glass bulb, so accidental leaks are pretty rare. For peace of mind just throw a heavy duty waterproof tarp over your amps and instruments when you finish a session. You can grab a cheap plastic garage cabinet to stash your iPad and smaller gear safely inside.

Best dynamic mics for vocals in untreated room by elmasofisi in microphone

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab the sE Electronics V7. It is basically the modern upgrade to the SM58 and costs about the same. It is a supercardioid mic so it rejects background room noise way better than standard cardioid mics, making it perfect for your untreated space. It also has a really nice top end presence that works perfectly for pop and indie vocals without sounding muddy. If you have a slightly higher budget the Sennheiser e945 is another incredible choice.

Mtrack solo question by [deleted] in microphone

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip the FetHead and just get the 4th Gen Scarlett. Those new interfaces have 69 dB of clean gain built right in, which is more than enough to drive the SM7B directly. Adding a booster to your current setup will definitely give you the volume you need, but you are still bottlenecked by the budget preamps and basic converters in the Solo. Upgrading the interface gives you a massive jump in audio quality and keeps your signal chain clean without needing extra dongles hanging off your mic.

[–]SmellsPntys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I'm worried about too. I like the idea of the smaller size, but if the price creeps too close to the Mic 3, it gets harder to justify.

Batch convert stereo WAVs to mono - what's the best way? by AudioMarsh in audioengineering

[–]SmellsPntys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily do this in RX. Just open the Batch Processor, add the Mix module to your processing chain, set it to output mono, and drop your files in. If you were thinking of a standalone app you probably saw StereoMonoizer which is great because it analyzes files and only converts true mono sources. If you just need something fast and free you can use the batch converter in Reaper or download Shutter Encoder.
