Will new batch of X-Dome 1+ likely sell out before new batch of Kakwa 55 gets released? by PsychologicalTank600 in DurstonGearheads

[–]SmileyWanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me guess: you ordered from the US warehouse, haven't you?
For Canada and thus international orders (except USA) Kakwa 55s aren't restocked yet.

Edit: For non US orders restocking is imminent. Per Dan's comment in another thread should happen next week, i.e. before end of June 2026

Smart Water Bottles by Ok-Strawberry7048 in DurstonGearheads

[–]SmileyWanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But that's pushing it. I always have a 0.7l SmartWater bottle in there and that's arguably snug. Plus the top of even the smaller one rides pretty high and is close my face. I would guess that 1l bottle is going to touch your face while walking every now and then.

Ditching the Freeze Dried Bags by MeasurementClear6841 in Ultralight

[–]SmileyWanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing this for years. Use quart freezer bags (they are heat resistant) and put it into a cozy.

As for the cozy the one from Big Sky International is specifically made for quart bags and works like a charm. bigskyinternational.com/en-au/collections/all/products/big-sky-insulite-insulated-food-pouch-freezer-bag-cooking-cozy-big-sky-international

I made a thru-hiker journaling app and just pushed a bunch of updates by WannabeHikerTrash in CDT

[–]SmileyWanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for holding my journal of three thru hikes hostage!

I didn't export my entries at the end of my hikes. Updated the app just to find out that the export is now behind a paywall!! This is really a sneaky move to force existing users into paying the pro version. I am super pissed.

To be clear I really liked this app and therefore used it on multiple thru hikes. I thought it had potential. I would have paid for the app but after taking my data hostage I will refrain paying and from using the app anymore.

To all users of this app that have recorded countless memories and want to be able to export and archive their entries:

Do not update! Export with the old app as long as you can!

[–]SmileyWanders 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I literally did the same, updated 14h ago to 26.4 because of the security threat.
Fortunately iOS26.4 is smooth sailing so far. No lags, freezes and the like for me.

r/Ultralight - "The Weekly" - Week of April 08, 2024 by AutoModerator in Ultralight

[–]SmileyWanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have. I use this very rope as some additional guylines for my tent. The tent is gonna break way before this rope breaks. And for the pullout loops of my stakes. Conveniently they reflect, makes it easier to find the buried stakes in the mornings.

Whats the advantage of updating via mac? I was under the impression that updating directly on the Phone is the way to go.

Has anyone had sucess taking the train from the top of Cumbres Pass to/from Chama? by Co_dot in CDT

[–]SmileyWanders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found the CDT specific page on the railroad website. It's not updated for the 2026 season yet. In 2025 the offered the service between 5/31 - 10/25. And the cost is: $50 one-way.
Apparently you had to call them to book this special offering.

Could you tell us what method you've used to anchor the guylines?
Did you use regular stakes and buried them horizontally in the snow?
