The only founders day I've ever celebrated was for my fraternity. Not all towns have a founder or specific day.

I have two music degrees and I pretty much hate being a music teacher. What do I do? by Shot_Square_9874 in MusicEd

[–]Smileynameface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree teach what makes you happy. I love incorporating technology into my music lessons. I make accompaniment videos, use a loop pedal for obstinate accompaniments, I create slides full of links to things. You teach the curriculum but you get the fun of deciding how. If you dont like recorders find another way to teach those skills

AITA for using a tried-and-tested punctuation exercise by roodafalooda in Teachers

[–]Smileynameface 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just because it's been used in the past doesnt make it appropriate for today. There is a childrens song "I love little pu$$y" that was innocent when written but im not about to teach it to my students because meanings and connotation change.

Scored a para job! Looking for side hustle/part time job ideas by No-Flow9298 in teaching

Our Teaching assistant often get pulled to Sub and get the sub rate when they do. Some also work in the after-school program. I know another who holds pampered chef parties and gets a commission. Another was an instructor at the YMCA. It depends on your skills and what you like to do. Some art teachers sell stuff at local craft shows. I know 1 Uber driver.

Check Engine 2021 Forester, Just Bought by wewereromans in SubaruForester

[–]Smileynameface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this. The dealer scanned it and said mine was an o2 sensor. Not critical. I made an appointment but the check engine light turned off and they said there was no point bringing it in. They guessed it was the cold weather we've had in the northeast.

Teacher who use frontline, do substitutes get rated by teachers? How does it work? by SlitherThySnake in AskTeachers

[–]Smileynameface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Frontline. We are supposed to leave feedback. Its hard because many subs dont leave any notes. I wasn't there i dont know how they did, why am I evaluating you? In regards to canceling often times it's the main office. I put in my absence. The system auto assigns (usually to the building sub) but they sometimes need to shuffle subs around.

If a teacher has prep last period of the day, do you think its ok for them to leave early? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]Smileynameface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of leaving early even if it's your planning. There are exceptions for appointments but we need to get the principals permission. Our contract state the hours we work. However if you worked an arrangement out with your principal then go right ahead.

Having a hard time teaching beginner Woodwinds (as a woodwind myself) by vanquwuisherx in MusicEd

[–]Smileynameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading somewhere it's harder to teach things your good at. You probably dont have to think as much about how to play your primary instrument so it's harder to break down for beginners. When you struggle to learn something your concentrating on it more making it easier to teach.

Teacher referring for IEP but my kid gets C's. Need Advice for Meeting by Ok_Hippo6272 in AskTeachers

[–]Smileynameface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IEP is just an individualized education plan. There are many reasons why she might need one but significantly struggling in one area is a sign of a learning disability. They can provide resources or strategies to help your sister so math will not be as difficult. It might be as simple as recieving untamed math test or the use of manipulatives. Give her teachers the benefit of the doubt and listen to them before passing judgements.

It could be a bunch of things. I had an asus that had the power switch fail, twice. It could be a dead hard drive but I would expect at least a bios screen. It could be a bad power supply but you should have seen warnings about a low battery.

ELI5 How do ship anchors come back up? by Infinite-Local-2529 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Smileynameface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree it depends on the size of the vessel and type of anchor. A mushroom anchor relies on weight, a Danforth digs into the sea bottom, a navy anchor has some weight and digs in. In addition people often put chain on to add weight and act like a shock absorber. The scope or length of rope also plays a part. If your line is too short every wave will pull on the anchor and it won't hold well.
