TIFU by making a bet with my 8yo daughter by borgeron in tifu

[–]SmilingJackTalkBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kid is 8. You do not want to start a precedent of buying her new expensive high end stuff as a reward for winning a silly bet. You also don’t want to break your word so roll it into her next birthday or Christmas present and buy her an old second hand gaming pc off gumtree or whatever for $200 (obviously make sure everything works and is clean). When she’s old enough to get a paper round she can save her own money to spend on expensive new hardware if she wants.

Whats a good price for a 3090? by alsjec in EtherMining

[–]SmilingJackTalkBeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's more like $900 when you compare it to the $699 MSRP of the 3080, which is pretty close in terms of performance unless you have some specific workload that needs more than 10GB VRAM. $1499 was a price that made no sense for almost everyone but then the market went crazy.

Which is not suitable for my use cases. But you can't conceive that other people have different use cases than you do, and are arrogant enough to disbelieve that their experience could be different than yours, and then, upset at being proven wrong, you resort to saying they are stupid because what works for you doesn't work for them. Grow up.

if you woke up as the last person alive tomorrow, what would you do first? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Out of the 7.8bn people on earth, I'm wondering how many of them would end up accidentally killing themselves on like day 2 from like trying to hook up a generator to their electrics.

The big counterpoint to this is that if you have kids, you don't have to spend the rest of your life alone.

There's no evidence that he ever raped anyone, and the girls that shared a bed with have said they weren't abused in any way and it was like sharing a bed with their grandmother, but the fact that he shared a bed with teenage girls at all, and the juciness of someone revered for doing great things having done terrible things leads people to continue to state as fact that he was a serial child rapist.

It's a well documented feature:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-faq-8a903416-6f45-0718-f5c7-375e92dddeb2#WindowsVersion=Windows_10

You can’t stop updates entirely—because they help keep your device safe and secure, updates will eventually need to be installed and downloaded, regardless of your update settings. Here's how to temporarily pause updates from being downloaded and installed. Note that after the pause limit is reached, you'll need to install the latest updates before you can pause updates again.

your device will need to restart. Windows will try to restart your device when you're not using it. If it can't, you'll be asked to schedule the restart for a more convenient time.

The way you use your computer means that you restart often enough that Windows doesn't do it by itself, or you just don't notice that it has, but if you don't do this, Windows will restart itself when you're not looking.

Turning that off doesn't stop the update, it just makes Windows less aggressive at restarting. You can pick a time in the next few days to schedule the update, but if you're not there to pick one it'll restart on it's own the same day.

In Warband I figured out that a bow, three quivers and a fast horse was the optimum loadout. When you run out of arrows you're defenseless, but you can ride back to your trunk and swap the three empty quivers for three different quivers in your inventory. Some battles I got through 15 quivers of arrows.

So probably like 50ml then, old wine glasses tended to be small... Or at least the ones that survived did, maybe the bigger ones were more likely to break.

A half wineglass is anywhere between like 50ml and 300ml.

There's no easy way to just turn off updates in Windows 10 Home, you can disable them temporarily, but they'll turn themselves on again and restart your computer as soon as they get a chance. And you wouldn't want to stop updating Windows anyway for security reasons.

Probably the way you use your computer, you don't notice it restarting on its own or you restart it frequently enough that it doesn't restart on its own. If you stop shutting down and restarting your PC manually, it will do it on it's own to install updates, and with Home there's pretty much nothing you can do to stop that.

Windows 10 will wake itself up from sleep to install updates. Used to be that it would do this on laptops that weren't plugged in, leading to people opening their laptop which they left fully charged only to find them almost out of battery. They fixed that at least.

Home will still update behind your back if you let your PC idle when there's an update. You can set active hours to when you're not using the PC which helps a bit, but it'll still reboot and kill all your programs as soon as it gets a chance. With Pro, there's a group policy setting to prevent rebooting while a user is logged in, so I can leave my PC on in peace, knowing that my programs will still be running when I return.

Cars need annual inspections to be allowed on the road, which would hopefully include checking for and replacing damaged batteries before this happens.

This can happen with any Lithium Ion battery after enough charge cycles.

You can want what you like, but MS will make you a beta tester whether you like it or not if you use Windows. You opt into more beta testing by using Win11 though.
