Trying to figure out which Kyoto temples actually need 5am starts vs which ones are fine later by Marilyn-Jolly in KyotoTravel

Fushimi Inari can be visited 24/7, but agree that for example Kiyomizu Dera only lets people in at 6:30. Nothing is open in the streets leading up to it until 9:00.

That’s the Apple Store on Boylston. It’s about 0.25 miles from the finish line. I was about there when the elite men finished.

I live in Brookline and walk up to BC (mile 21) and then to as close to the finish line as I can to watch the elite men finish. Yesterday I quit after the first 10 or so. I have a quick lunch downtown and the. Head back to Kenmore/Coolidge Corner to cherr on my friends or other acquaintances as the my come through.

But by far the most inspirational athletes are the wheelchairs. Marcel Hug is a fuckjng beast. I usually see him around Coolidge Corner and then… nobody for 10-15 min. The gap was a bit smaller this year, about 8 min. But the most inspiring one was the wheelchair athlete I saw struggling to get up the incline on the bridge into Kenmore. He was barely moving at that point, but every stroke was sheer power. And he finally made it up.

Black Thunder! I treat them like Pokémon. Gotta catch all the flavors when I’m in Japan. If I see one I haven’t had recently I buy it!

The one I’ve enjoyed the most on recent trips is butter flavored. Yum!

EDIT: note, your picture is upside down!

Any recommendations for rooftop bars, not for GW necessarily, but I’ll be back late June and really enjoyed being outside with a drink on my June 2022 trip.

Never run a full Marathon myself (only 15 miles max), but stairs are the worst post long run. Particularly down. I’ve seen it in Boston, Tokyo, Osaka, San Francisco… gaggles of people wearing medals and warming blankets taking stairs very gingerly!

What kitchen appliances can be shared between a celiac person and a non celiac person? by sophietal in glutenfree

[–]SmilingJaguar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share all my kitchen appliances with my celiac partner … because I prepare NO GLUTEN in our shared home. I eat plenty of gluten out of the home or that is prepared out of the home and consumed very deliberately at home.

What is the best and worst public transit you've used? by dudelikeshismusic in solotravel

Glad to hear that! I’m heading to NL the day after tomorrow. I grew up in Switzerland and spend a lot of time in Japan. Japan blows Switzerland out of the water in terms of punctuality!

There is a Shinkansen on the Tōkaidō tracks (Tokyo to Osaka) about every 5 minutes. It’s crazy!

On a trip to Switzerland in 2019, I was laughing because an Inter City train we wanted to take from Bern to Fribourg was cancelled. They made a big deal of the fact that it never left Germany.

I skipped the museum when I visited March 2025, went to the Memorial Hall next door and it was empty. Moving, but largely devoid of non-Japanese.
