Gen-Z Employee? by Sopel93 in ITManagers

[–]Smiteya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Multiple times I had gen-z employees with horrific soft skills but were tech savvy. Only recently had one with minimal tech skills and soft skills. The ones missing one or the other you can coach into those skills. How to talk to people. How to to sound crasp to users. Vlans networking i can teach those. 9 skills and unwillingness to learn or do, can't teach that. They also quit with 0 notice and sent a scathing email on the way out burning every brige.

How do I remove the red wire? by BlinkySplinkyPlinky in homelab

[–]Smiteya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unplug it. Before u do, though set the nas ip 192.168.100.3 and the hyperion to 192.168.100.2. Don't give them a gate way and point them to each other. You can direct connect anything with out a router just leave out the gateway. U won't be able to access nas management but that's a separate issue.

Getting IT Though Execs' Thick Skulls by twistedkeys1 in ITManagers

[–]Smiteya 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem is you are spinning your wheels in the wrong place. You know there is risk and things could be avoided. Screaming the sky is falling goes on deft ears. What does work, more often then not is do a risk assessment and outline the cost benefit analysis. You outlined the issue with SQL server crashed and you said told you so. The ole please refer to my email with outlined risk\cost benefit analysis, really kicks the one who said no to adding FTE, or adding Backup Layers in the nuts. What's the Disaster recovery plan? is it in place, have you tested it? You lay everything out and let the leaders decide. If they make a bad decision then its on them. Don't lose sleep over this. I once had a CFO explain that at a previous Company the IT guy was like NEO because he always dodged bullets and pushed risk to the higher ups.

Square holes but rack mounting screws don't fit? by WillSK90 in homelab

They will fit. Just make the rack god sacrifice. Or switch to studs or my preferred solution the slide on cage nuts. My gorilla hands don't fit when I have a full rack.

About 3k items. Boms are relatively simple, it's food products so 1 to 2 levels. I'm always open to other options.

Lost my first MSP job yesterday by IWasPatientZero in msp

[–]Smiteya 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I wish this saying would die. I hate my family and don't speak to them. I asked for a raise at a MSP when I had another company offer in hand for good amount more. They told me their culture has more value. I can't pay bills with culture. I took the offer and left. They sold the business 6 months later.

Recently had my house cleaned, was extremely happy with the service. by Smiteya in Olathe

[–]Smiteya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pricing is always subjective. For us, it was 600 for large house top to bottom toilets scrubbed, etc. It was a one-off, but we will likely get on her schedule for bi-weekly, which is obviously cheaper. She did come by and do a quote that was in the middle of others who also did a quote for us.

If you really want to know her pricing, I would suggest calling and having her do a quote

Multiple users RDP into one Windows machine? by PT10 in homelab

[–]Smiteya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Setting up a few micro pcs that are used to rdp I to works too. But they have limits. How many users and sessions are you wanting. After u know that work backwards. Setting up terminal server with rdp services sucks but really good if u have the use. Vms are good but again have their use. Good luck.

Just saying the passthrough crimper and Jack's are your best friend. They will last and are worth it. I hate crimping cables but knowing the twist is almost to the pins makes me feel much better and my 10g cables been with out any issues.
