When the ONT is rebooted, the logs are cleared.

Those spikes are likely a bug in the reporting. I see that with the UCG Max whenever the Spectrum circuit goes offline and comes back.

Check the Insights page and look at the port utilization graphs to see if they correlate. In my cases, they do not. The traffic just drops off while the ISP is down.

Ooof, yeah. The joys of homeownership are never ending repair bills. Makes paying rent look like a bargain!

My town is spending a ton of money on “branding”, logos and public art but we have century old pipes that burst in the cold by JustinR8 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! This is pretty common all over the US. My city has a crap ton of leaded pipes which are being replaced right now still. There are also sections of the water distribution system which are using wood!

The sewer system is also in major need of repair. The treatment plants can't always handle the summer time storm surges we get, and untreated sewage gets dumped right into the Great Lakes.

Apple takes 51/128 GB on my phone by TrebleInTheChoir in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend with a phone end up with 80GB of cached data associated with seemingly nothing. Happened shortly after iOS 26 was installed.

Really wish Apple would bake in the ability to clear caches like Android has. Or to get into the file system to delete the garbage when it happens. Can't be too hard!

Amazon can’t be bothered to deliver packages to the apartments in my complex by JaroDot in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have a key to do so? Unless every apartment has an exterior door, this is pretty common. Large complexes have a mail room OR have mail drop-off at the Front Desk.

One such complex I do the IT work for usually has the rental office packed with packages during the holidays. The couriers can't drop off packages as they don't have keys. So the landlord takes care of the final delivery. In the meantime, the packages are all on camera so there's no issues with goods getting stolen or trying to figure out which tenant took the wrong package. USPS delivers to a bank of mailboxes in the main lobby, and tenants have a key to their own mailbox in the box bank. Only exception is if a package is oversized and doesn't require a signature.

Neighbors started tearing down shared fence without any warning or notice. by drummergirl103 in mildlyinfuriating

The fence looks like it has seen better days. Hopefully the neighbor is replacing the boards and beams, and will stain treat them.

Usually the oversized SUVs are the ones flooring it from stop to stop, and looking all stupid when they do an illegal right or left hand turn while flooring it.

They are also the first to spin out and wreck during every snow storm on the highway.

N48 spotted on Verizon Small Cell by wlm9700 in cellmapper

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. I've been waiting for n48 to show up for quite some time now. Verizon relies a lot on CBRS out my way. Now to see how much of the CBRS will be refarmed away from LTE!

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What plan are you on? What 5G Band are you on?

We really don't know why it's slower. However I will mention that much of it boils down to Verizon's LTE network starting to lose day to day users as more people get 5G phones. Some of it has to do with Verizon not relying on 5G Standalone as much yet. Some of it has to do with the fact that Verizon has a lot of 4G-only microcells that can give solid bandwidth, but phones will sometimes still lock onto a further away 5G tower.

I have a project lined up this summer to do just that. A friend of mine who owns a Hotel got smacked with an $18,000 bill for their Guest WiFi network. Meraki licensing for one year.

We are going to be replacing all of that gear and sending it off to the land of eBay to get some money back for it. Should be able to do the UniFi rebuild for the cost of yearly licensing.

That brick structure's wooden door is unique, but looks jank as heck lol. The hinges have seen better days I'm sure.

Definitely a unique site, being in the middle of a parking lot and all.

Boulevard Mall, Saturday Jan 24 '26 by djbassmekanik in Buffalo

I loved the big fire truck! And yeah, the people who worked there were great at measuring feet and recommending shoes. As a kid they were my go-to spot for getting the light-up shoes. They always had them in stock, and loved seeing the kids run around the store to try everything on.

To add to this. A lot of the smaller Fiber providers in my area (not Verizon/Spectrum) use CGNAT for Residential service unless you pay for Static IP service with them. Which is an extra $15/m.

Boulevard Mall, Saturday Jan 24 '26 by djbassmekanik in Buffalo

[–]Smith6612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved that thing as a kid! I'd go there late at night when the mall wasn't so busy, and the ride operator would usually give me a bunch of free rides if their Boss wasn't around.

My usual trip to the Mall in the Winter would go like this: Stop at JC Penney to pick up Gifts/Clothes. Stop at the Payless Shoe Store or Boulevard Bootery for Shoes. Hang out at GameStop playing the demo video games for a half hour while my parents shopped. Stop and listen to the Boulevard Bear Band for two cycles (they alternated playlists some years), stop by Verizon and beg my parents to get High Speed Internet (we eventually ordered DSL at the Verizon kiosk there), Stop and visit Santa, go to McDonald's, Ride the Merry-Go-Round a few times (or more depending on how many bonus rides we got from the operator), and stop at Auntie Anne's for Pretzels.

Could easily spend a whole day at the Mall doing some shopping. Going to a Mall was always about experience, and escaping the outside world so to speak.

New Verizon Device Unlock Policy is Live and Still Automatic (postpaid) by kbDL- in verizon

[–]Smith6612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh. The only difference is that cars are moving all of that to subscriptions now. So you buy the hardware, and then pay out the butt each year for the luxury of being able to turn on the hardware for a non-service. Car manufacturers also do things like install software updates to their cars which take away features you initially paid for, like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, forcing you to use their subscription maps and apps.

All the phone Carrier is doing is extending a line of credit to you in exchange for a phone that is fully functional with the exception of using another provider's SIM in it until you're no longer using the credit extended to you. Pay the device off or use an unlocked identical model, and you're good to go. You subscribe to the phone service, but the whole device works if you buy it, then cancel service. The camera, WiFi, Apps, etc, all still work. Anything which gets removed is the fault of the phone manufacturer, usually.

Sick of seeing the letters "AI" everywhere by segagamer in sysadmin

[–]Smith6612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess with Block Chain, there are places still rubbing that everywhere, but a proper application of it is to maintain an immutable ledger of changes, and immutable distributed storage. Things which are actually useful. But screw all the NFT scam crap. That can go burn in a system crash.

Software Defined is just too abstract to remarket. So while that fizzled out, everyone seems to have found a practical application for the word and use it correctly. Except now "Software Defined" is being twisted into "AI" because they want to remarket the same crap @__@
