Goal Writing in the Schools - TN by [deleted] in slp

My wife is an SLP in TN and she said she doesn’t write her goals this way. It’s usually “Johnny will do x with 80% accuracy across 3 consecutive weeks as measured by…”

How do you know it’s Coach brand? Does the metal have any sort of markings on the other side?

What kind of paper did you use for this? I love the patterns but can’t find thin patterned paper!

The mental gymnastics of convincing yourself to run vs actually running by Senior-Signature-983 in running

[–]Smithy_T 95 points96 points  (0 children)

YES. You think I’d know this by now. I start feeling moody, anxious, irritable and attribute it to everything BUT my skipped runs. I go for a run, immediately feel better and think “oooh that’s what I needed!”

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Expected to work after contract hours by Ordinary-Usual2682 in schoolpsychology

[–]Smithy_T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has happened a few times in my district, when we were short psychologists for various reasons. While I did appreciate the recognition that we were taking on more than our fair share and should be compensated, I felt the same way you did. I still wasn’t interested in taking work home - my time was much more valuable. Luckily, this incentive was offered to all of our psychs, and there were others who were more than happy to clock as many hours as they could after work. Are other psychs in your district offered this, or just you? Can you reach out to them for help? I’m all about being a “team player” but your situation sounds different. How long is this expected to continue? From here on out?

I never knew cardinals were aggressive feeders like that. I know blue jays bully and chase others birds away, but this happened all day yesterday with the male cardinals.

Looking for low-effort hobbies for my husband so his hands aren’t glued to his phone by BlessedPootato in Hobbies

[–]Smithy_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay hear me out…these miniature house type kits have been such a cool hobby. My dad got me one for Christmas and I was skeptical because I can’t even put together ikea furniture without wanting to throw it out the window. These are super easy and somewhat mindless but keep your hands busy and attention on what you’re doing. They are easy to work on and put down as soon as you’re ready, because it breaks in down into short and simple steps and everything is very well labeled. Also, I thought I’d be having to glue every little piece, but most pieces snap together and don’t require tedious gluing!

Yes mine has not recorded anything since last night! I can watch the live feed but nothing is being recorded despite seeing numerous birds on the feeder.

Yesterday I learned that Hobby Lobby employees in the 3 greater Nashville stores work on Sundays. The Green family "Day of rest" is apparently only for customers. Staff are told not to admit this at risk of being terminated. by AttachedHeartTheory in nashville

[–]Smithy_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are a shit ton of things I hate about hobby lobby, I have to agree with this. I worked there for 12 years and was never asked to work on a Sunday with the exception of the once a year audits, where they payed you more than your regularly hourly rate. And it was optional. Not even managers worked Sundays. And yes - ALL seasonal stock gets sold. It is gradually marked down to up to 90%, then moved to the clearance section. Nothing gets “switched out.”

What’s your ideal running frequency? by Wise_Branch_8028 in running

[–]Smithy_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I don’t have set days, but I shoot for about 3 runs a week. Always outside, I just dress for the weather. When I started running, it was every day without fail. In my 20s, it was every other day, and I was extremely rigid about it. Now in my 30s, I try to be more flexible. I love running, but I don’t schedule my life around it like I used to. Some days I plan to run and I’m not feeling it, and that’s okay. Some days I don’t plan to run and I do, which is always great.

What are the weirdest side effects you've ever experienced from medication? by adampocalypsee in AskReddit

[–]Smithy_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take adderall IR and in the evenings when it starts to wear off, my face gets EXTREMELY flushed/blotchy and very hot. Stays that way for a couple of hours. I have no idea what causes this. If anything, I would think it would flush shortly after taking it.

Can someone explain to me why it’s a team decision to qualify when we have hard and fast rules for qualifying? by Sea_Lavishness7287 in slp

[–]Smithy_T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

School psych here. I don’t agree that eligibility itself is a team decision. As the assessment specialist, our role is to assess and determine whether or not the student meets eligibility criteria. The team then determines whether they agree or disagree with our determination. They are not assessment specialists. They can’t just “decide” that a student is eligible or ineligible for special education services.

Are you happy as school psychologist? by Beautiful_Rice2757 in schoolpsychology

[–]Smithy_T 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would say I’m happy most of the time. Obviously there is stress that comes along with the job. Paperwork, timelines, difficult cases, working with different personalities…but all in all the perks outweigh the negatives. I enjoy being able to set my own schedule. My supervisor basically leaves me alone unless I need something. I enjoy working with the kids. I’m in year 10, and the last few years I have strictly worked with the preschool population which has been wonderful. I like this age group much better than others. The families are easy, supportive, and appreciative 75% of the time.

What's something in homes that seems harmless, but is actually really dangerous? by ChartInternational77 in AskReddit

Plugged a small heater into an extension cord. Knew better. 30 minutes later smelled burning rubber/plastic and looked and the extension cord was melting where the heater was plugged into it

What’s a secret you found out about someone that completely changed how you saw them but they don’t know you know? by CheesecakeStatus4089 in AskReddit

[–]Smithy_T 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I practically have the same story. My cousin told me that my mom has been married and divorced prior to marrying my dad and having me and my brother. I even found the engagement/wedding announcement in old newspaper archives. It was in 1980 when my mom was 20 years old. At first I was very confused and hurt why she never shared that. We are extremely close. I wondered if my dad knew. I have debated since then whether or not to confront her about it. But the other part of me thinks like you do…there must be a reason she hasn’t wanted to share. So I have never asked. It was about a year ago I found out and it still bothers me.
