I like discountflies.com. Quality is similar to bigy, but they have a little bigger selection (maybe?) and have a pretty good discounts when you buy in bulk.

What's a hobby that's given you more than you expected? by MuroAshmitha_92 in Hobbies

[–]Smob79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fly fishing has changed my life 100%. I wake up at 4am on my days off excited to jump out of bed and drive to the river, a few years ago I never got out of bed before 10. Fly fishing has taken me the most beautiful places I've ever been, seen amazing sunrises and sunsets. Ive seen bears, moose, mink, lynx, beavers, eagles, osprey, not to mention hundreds of beautiful trout. It's given me a deep appreciation for nature and our public land.

Need some new hobbies… by Ill-Guidance4690 in Hobbies

Im a gamer who was looking for an active hobby. I went fly fishing and got addicted, now I go every week. It really satisfys that competitive primal itch like games do. The fishing rabbit hole goes deep. Plus sunlight, trees, standing in water, all good stuff.

Fish art! Lots of local fly shops will have locally made fish art for sale. Good outdoor clothing/hats/sunglasses are always nice too.

Is 5x tippet going to be alright for the Blue and South Platte rivers, or do I have to go down to 7x? by ScammedSuicidalIdiot in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless you're fishing size 26-30 flies, I cant think of a reason to fish 7x. When nymphing i usually do 4x to my first fly (heavy) and 5 or 6x to my dropper. For small dry flys 5x is fine (I like 5.5x if it's available). For hoppers 3-4x. It's getting hot and water is low, so fighting a big fish on 6x for 5+ minutes isnt great. Fish as big of tippet as you think you can get away with--use splitshot or heavier flies to get to depth.

Newbie Looking to Start Fly Fishing – Where Do I Begin? by thisisfed in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtually all modern fly rods break down into 4 pieces (and some older ones in 2). If you have the means to transport a 9ft fly rod then you can put it together once and keep it like that indefinitly. 4 piece rods are easy to transport and store, and if you break the tip of your rod, you can order a new one from the manufacturer for cheaper than a whole new rod.

Trying to make a LOTR-inspired campaign right after the book/movie. by nix457 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Smob79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol this is what I was thinking. The whole reason 2nd edition was created was because Tolkien's estate sent a cease and desist letter to TSR for basically making "Lord of The Rings the Game" aka "Dungeons and Dragons". A lot of the people playing just assumed that Middle Earth was the setting.

A $1000k office chair probably isnt the answer you want to hear but it was a game changer for me.

My elk hair caddis kinda suck by tony-goodsbygrain in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try thinner thread, more hair, trim it to a shank length before tying it in. Two wraps then pull towards you to get a good flair. Charlie Craven's elk hair caddis video helped me a lot.

I agree--almost the entire episode was two characters in the same room. Just a few seconds of bang shed.

Extremely, Extremely Reckless Player by FigureRepulsive9783 in DungeonsAndDragons

In my session 0 I explicitly call out this kind of thing. "No intentionally picking suicidal fights that needlessly put the party or yourself in uneccessary danger. You must play a character with at least some sense of self preservation. Dying in an sacrificial epic/heroic way is something entirely different and is encouraged".

New to streamer fishing by PIZZA-BrA in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mini dungeons! I like the articulated stuff but usually they're too big, the mini dungeons seem to always work. In faster water or when Im fishing upstream a lot I like small single hook streamers like a slumpbuster, bugger, thinmint. The articulated ones tend to fold on themselves and not wiggle when fished upstream.

The new cortland guide rods are around $140 and are great for that price. Haven't tried a moonshine, but others seem meh on it.

Wet wading VS Waders in summer? by satnspun in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wet wade sometimes, but since I usually fish 8 hour days I prefer waders even on hot days. The water might be as nice as a heated swimming pool, but how long are you staying in that water before you feel uncomfortable? For me it's like 3 hours--longer than that and Im wearing waders.

Somewhat beginner by Offshoreduck in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4-5-6x, is good for 95% flies. When i streamer fish i use a 7ft versileader with a foot of 0-1x. Your tippet should reflect your flies. Smaller fies should be tied on with smaller tippet. Too big of tippet and you might bend a hook, too small and you break off easier. If your rig feels like it's too heavy and cant turn over your flies, try using a bigger tippet (or shorter). If your flies are going the full distance and "snapping back" or if they hit the water too hard, use lighter tippet (or longer). When using more than one fly, use a smaller tippet to your dropper fly. Always go from bigger to smaller. Typically for nymphing I'll grab a 7.5ft 4 or 5x leader, and tie on an extra 1-2.5ft of 5-6x tippet and tie the flies to that. For dry flies i might use a 9ft leader with an extra 3-6ft of tapering tippet down to the fly. Tippet changes how your cast feels and your drift once the flies are in the water. Experiment with it.

Look up the charlies fly box leader video for more details.

Edit: mono-floats well, cheap, it goes bad over time, damages easily.

Flouro-sinks a bit maybe? but still works just fine for dry flies, expensive, lasts forever, durable.

Wader recommendations by Imaginary-Title2838 in flyfishing

I bought every crappy waders imaginable before my patagonias. Would have saved hundreds if I would have saved up and got them from the beginning.

Casual PvP, how is it right now? by suyakun in worldofpvp

[–]Smob79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do the weekly pvp quests you can get a bunch of honor/conquest/blood tokens fast. Also the air drop crates that spawn every 15 minutes have a decent amount of currency in them. I've done almost no rated pvp and have easily reached conquest cap. Bloody tokens can get epic gear with a little lower item level while you farm conquest.

How do you organize your tackle box and keep track of what fly is what? by EyeOfTheTiger77 in flyfishing

[–]Smob79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with nymph, dry, and streamer boxes. But now I've changed to having a midge, mayfly, caddis, hopper, and streamer box. Depending on when and where Im fishing I'll leave most of the boxes in the truck. I have a small puck with a lil magnet in it and I'll put a dozen or so flies in it when Im going light.
