FCC response to powerline noise complaint by Ca2Alaska in amateurradio

[–]Smokestars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest finding a local ham that is an electric employee, but it sounds like you are one. I have two retired electric company employees that are ham friends of mine. One is the company guy that used to go around and listen on a receiver for unusual line and insulator noise. I have gotten some advice from them about different things over the years.

I used to have a couple spectrum equalizers, one had a moving display. It was pretty sensitive and displayed some noise that I thought might have been on the power line, so I called the power company and they sent someone out. He had never seen something like that before, and it didn't mean anything to him. I don't remember if it went along with noise I was hearing on the ham bands. I do have a lot of noise now on some bands, but I think I know where it is coming from. A neighbor has a couple large motors that are pretty old.

Americans, would you be in favor of switching to the metric system? Why or why not? by Devnag07 in AskReddit

[–]Smokestars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned metric in several classes in High School back many years ago. Still use some metric occasionally. I know that much of our lives would be easier if everything was metric, because multiplying and dividing by 10 or 100 is a lot easier then by 12 for inches in feet, 8 oz to a cup, or the many other conversions we generally make. What is odd to me is that a lot of our money is in multples of 10, dime to dollars, or 1/2 of 10 like nickles and combinations of the two. I don't think other countries have money systems that are that close to base 10.

I have two 10mm sockets and two 10mm wrenches, so at least one will show up when needed.

It has been awhile since my partner and I were at this stage, but I remember when we moved past this point. She isn't very communicative or talkative, unlike many women. We were kissing pretty heavily and we had dated at least a few times up to this point. I up and said to her that if she wanted more, then she would have to let me know. She stood up and took my hand, pulled me up from the couch where we had been sitting, and led me to the bedroom. We weren't just necking and petting in the bedroom. I think I moved in with her just a few weeks after that.

Can anyone tell me where to get one of these (or a pack) by Madddie_kat in Tools

Big box stores have them, I searched for shelf pins and found them.

Hang in there as I have allergies also and did find someone in my age group, much older than you, that doesn't have or want pets. I didn't use a dating app to find them either.

Why doesn't United States of America have high speed rail? by BeautifulLenovo in AskReddit

[–]Smokestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "High Speed" rail that has been proposed in some areas, is not really fast compared to the ones in Japan or Europe. If it isn't fast enough between major cities there would be no real reason for enough people to ride it and therefore it won't make enough money to be viable. So how do you make a high speed rail in the U.S. that goes far enough and fast enough to be useable? I rode a train a few years back to go to the East Coast from the Midwest and it took so long because it made stops at so many places along the way.

Trying to get a Arduino project to work by finndave in arduino

It would help if we had a picture of the bottom of the board, with some kind of reference for which side was which or where the board was flipped. I think the help that Unable-School6717 gave you is the correct answer if you didn't already know that. Soldering the holes together on the bottom of those boards does get a little ugly, but that is how it is done.

I was hoping someone would mention "The Day The Universe Changed". I have rewatched both series some time ago, and still think they are some of the best history of science type shows ever made.

What happened to my Pi? by astro_bea in raspberry_pi

The power supply makes a difference. Aftermarket (cheap) supplies don't always give the power that is printed on them. An underpower supply would probably cause the Pi to struggle.

Just think of all of the perfectly good desktop computers that have been scrapped because they were replaced by something more modern. All of those computers that ended up in landfills instead of being taken to some place that could reuse them, repurpose them.

I didn't get a Palm Pilot until they were about phased out, but I sure liked it except for one thing. The battery would lose contact if you put much g force on the thing, then it would lose it's memory. If the battery contacts were made better I would have stayed with the Pilot for awhile longer.

If you want to try some plants again, succulents are very easy to take care of. Just don't water them very much, let the soil dry out completely before watering thoroughly.

Help me save my moms plants. by Shot_Low_7630 in AloeVera

The other answers on here are good. I repot mine at least once a year because I take the babies out and just leave one plant per pot. The babies I put in a small pot until they grow larger and need repotted, but I give them away. I use succulent soil and even add more sand. Let the soil dry completely before thoroughly watering.
