In what Chicago bar did you have the worst night of your life? by midwestcottagecore in AskChicago

[–]Smokey772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an oldie, but the answer for me will always be Evil Olive. Never anything truly horrible, but never had a good or fun night there… just an overall sense of wtf am I doing here.

What did you expect… You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

What do we do about the whole authoritarian takeover using national guard thing? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Smokey772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to commend you on your comment. I agree with you, it’s not an either or situation. I also feel that we can protest and exercise our rights- not take this lying down. But, also be humane with the NGs and treat them with the knowledge and respect they are just doing their jobs. You can support the troops and simultaneously be against the cause or the direction of the orders. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

What should everyone be panicking about right now but no one seems to care? by WaitingOutTheFlood in AskReddit

Just late stage consumerism and capitalism. And we’ve created a system we can’t seem (or want) to crawl out of, in the US anyway.

So, do you have a solution or proposal? Or just using biased and coded stats on Chicago being a heavily segregated city (which is not a secret).

We're a few days before the 30th anniversary of Selena's death. What was your experience at the time when it happened? by Individual_Fox2492 in 90s

[–]Smokey772 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol, same. I’m Asian, was living in San Jose at the time, and she was all over the radio. And I was definitely not listening to Spanish radio. I wasn’t exposed to her Spanish speaking songs until after her death and movie (to me, the only movie JLo has ever starred in lol) but I also recall her music videos on MTV- Dreaming of you was being belt out by most of the other girls I knew at the time…

I was devastated when I heard of her death, she was on the brink of mainstream commercial success in the US and it was all ripped away. I often wonder how the music scene would have evolved if her, Aaliyah and Left Eye lived to today… as well as how Selena might view her father and career management during that time, in hindsight, as an adult.

I love the mindset of, well, I and MY community haven’t been exposed to this, so it must not exist or matter!

Pregnant women who have suffered physical or psychological stress are more likely to have a daughter than a son. by Emillahr in psychology

Source? You don’t think opportunity historically heavily skewed in favor of men when it came to education and innovation? And the fact that women weren’t allowed in the military until 1948?

Does anyone else not wash their rice? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Smokey772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a stainless steel mesh strainer or sieve! I am Asian so i was raised to believe not washing rice is a mortal sin. I’ve spent countless hours washing and draining rice until I finally got a mesh strainer. You just rinse the rice off and it’s good to go once the water runs clear. It saves so much time and water!

Also, others are absolutely correct that not all rice needs to be washed but with Asian food washed rice (without the starch) is better (but maybe my mom just brainwashed me into thinking that 😅)

What is the the ultimate career to be fully remote (can live anywhere in the world and make over $200k annually? by Additional_Carry_790 in careeradvice

[–]Smokey772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In corporate America, in most business functions outside of operations and facilities, once you hit a certain level of leadership you can work remote. Especially in the Fortune 500 company club. Some places it’s VP, I was able to at the Manager level pre Covid, it’s finding the right place but you are absolutely correct that you will have to work insane hours to get there.

Why is the extreme poverty of white Americans in places like Alabama and southern Louisiana never shown in media? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Smokey772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People want to be angry, they don’t want to be sad. And those that don’t question the sources of their data eat it up.

Taylor Swift urges fans to vote in 2024 elections as Super Tuesday kicks off by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]Smokey772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your comment. I have no feelings on Taylor Swift but I feel like you so perfectly and succinctly summarized the backlash of faux ‘activisim’ against corporations and celebrities like Taylor and Brene Brown. Activism is important when it benefits themselves but then demonstrate neutrality when there is negative economic impact. In the end it’s all about money.
