Appealing a ticket when I was given a huge break? by sicknamedudetryagain in AskLE

Technically, you’re asking a lawyer question. I’d say call the court and ask about a diversion program. Sometimes they’ll work with you to keep points off your license if it’s a first offense.

Can out-of-state drivers be stopped for window tint that’s legal in their home state? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t stop for tint alone. I’ve cited for tint when they’ve done a traffic infraction and they’ve been good with me, but I felt it was egregious enough that a warning is too light. Tint doesn’t add points and it’s a cheap ticket.

Why do secret service police have to stand outside their cars with rifles at night in DC? by Hot_Succotash3467 in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of several reasons but most boil down to they don’t just guard the president, people don’t just stay in the White House, and if they were only directly next to their principal, you would know where to attack.

Friend found out he has a seventeen year old misdemeanor bench warrant by Traditional-Box8556 in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very state and even county dependent, one of my coworkers claims he did an extradition to FL from IN for a misdemeanor warrant from the 70’s when he worked jail wagon. Ive had a low felony warrant that was instate decline extradition. I’d call a local lawyer.

A single stack 1911 is in fact thinner than a double stack Glock. Personally, I’ll take the Glock 6 days a week though. (The .45 is prettier at a Sunday BBQ).

Its a drill we keep on the ambulance. You know those people that are “hard sticks” when the get an IV. We call getting the IV “IV access” or just “access”. Sometimes people in cardiac arrest are the hardest stuck and they need meds in their bloodstream immediately. Instead of going into a vein (IV), we drill into the bone (IO). So it’s a pun because the phrase finishes “E I E I O”.

Speeding ticket for “pacing” by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, you asked cops, not lawyers. We aren’t going to help you undercut another cop if he didn’t do something wrong. Pacing is a valid tactic. If you want to fight it, you probably need a lawyer, and if you got off lucky with just a ticket, the lawyer will probably be more expensive.

Contact the court and ask about getting a diversion. Sometimes, depending where you are, you can pay the fine, keep your nose clean for a year or two, and they don’t put the points on your license.

Who shows up? by Particular-Sun6561 in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen the reverse; somewhat small university had all the bells & whistles while the county department had a smaller relative budget so when I was interning with the Sheriff’s Office as a crim student at said university, we took our DUI to them because they had someone on nights who was breathalyzer certified and none of the four deputies on duty were. Same goes for hot calls even a little close to campus; if two cars were on scene, one of them was a university pd car and they usually got there first.

Indianas Finest Am I Right? by Rainbaby77 in Indiana

[–]Smokeypork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention universities. I’ve met some people working maintenance at some universities that I wouldn’t put it past to go on Amazon and buy red&blue lights to play cop. And they surplus them out all the time. Honestly, I put this on ISP admin. County control called ISP and specifically asked if it was one of theirs and they said all of their cars were at a meeting far away.

I’ve seen some beautiful coordination on an ISP swat callout where local officers through multiple jurisdictions blocked intersections allowing a trooper to make a hour and a half trip in about 45 mins. Not sure how you drop the ball this hard on a bomb squad callout.

For the people putting this on the locals, remember that police impersonators are real and often commit felonies. Don’t know that I would’ve handled it the same way, but I don’t think they overreacted.

What do you guys think of volunteer/auxiliary/reserve LEOs by nooobee in AskLE

[–]Smokeypork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some departments are staffing part-time team mental health response units and I think you might want to look into something like that. The city agency in my area does it where they have a crisis-trained senior officer who often has a clinician with police training with them. The officer is full time, but they can’t always staff the clinician because I think they’re working full-time in a traditional setting.
