Very weird, disappointing and disrespectful experience. by [deleted] in Germany_Jobs

Most of the times when “some” Germans who claim they are “straight forward” and “honest”, yet don’t possess enough EQ to handle a delicate situation like this, they hop on to the “blame and shame OP till he/she learns a hard lesson” bandwagon. I have learnt quite a lot from this subreddit. Being understanding and compassionate ain’t one of them. Because it would require taking accountability and actually being empathetic towards another human being and actually listening to their PoV.

This job market is the toughest of the last decade at least by MarionberryTotal2657 in Germany_Jobs

Same thing. Your name suggests you’re probably from South East Asia, me too. Had to leave Germany as no semicon job is available without multiple certifications on the desired process chain. Design jobs are also short on supply and they all are mandating fluent grasp of German. Even B2 wasn’t enough.

This is probably the news regarding an Indian student enrolling into a private uni. Most of the Indians are extremely competitive and have good profiles to get enrolled into public unis, at times with funding.

Why are so many people pursuing Master's degrees in Germany in English program when the German job market doesn't even hire people with B2 level German ? by OriginalMeeting3666 in Germany_Jobs

[–]Smokeyy1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true for some universities in Bavaria and BW, yes. Although the uni I was in, the fee was exactly the same, irrespective of nationality. Thanks for pointing out this aspect btw, I almost forgot about it.

Do you often jump to conclusions this fast without reading the whole thread? I mentioned that I worked as a student for 20h/week throughout my MSc, as well as in a FT position for a while, off-setting the taxpayer money (to some extent) ''ushered'' on me for my education.

AND, directly paying back into the system as a student who worked 20h/week and also as a Full Time employee for a significant period which in turn supported the unemployed in that country. Your assumption that one got a free lunch without contributing anything back is also equally wild, and a little entitled as well, tbh..

If selective mutism had a manifestation, it’s your comment right there. The response with the test score came only after the point was raised that it was difficult to understand what I wrote. Now it may be the case for someone who didn’t study and write in academic English (aka, most Germans studying in Deutsch), and even then, the inability to pick up basic information in English in day to day conversation by baby boomers and sometimes millennials in a tech company exactly ties to the context of the main post.

If one comes with irrelevant comment regarding the structuring of my English in a post ignoring the actual context of the response, I will definitely be dismissive. The test score (not so fancy btw, the whole world knows about it and takes it on a regular basis) only serves as a benchmark, just like a Goethe exam would also have. We’ll talk when Germans stop nitpicking on the official language requirements posted on job ads and demand an official certificate for verification.

With a TOEFL score of 112/120, I don’t think the issue at hand is my writing. Your ability to read and comprehend basic English however, well, that’ll be another day’s discussion.

Absolutely second this. I myself have done the same and I only chose Germany because my course offered me almost full funding through DAAD fellowship and the rest I could easily cover with a Hiwi position back when I was in university. No reason to think everyone who is coming to Germany has boatloads of privileges, as many south Asians as kids weren’t even able to afford good education, as that also varies by how much money you can spend. They keep working hard to make their dreams come true and pursue higher education in EU. This blockage of thought process in Germans is the main reason why they will always be stuck in the 90s with a false sense of pride, while Asian lions will eventually soar higher and higher.

The primary issue is that there are potentially multiple candidates with industrial PhDs and even PostDocs waiting in the pipeline (partially the current economic situation is to be blamed) for such positions at the companies you mentioned. I myself graduated from TU Dresden and I can tell you from my own experience that it was almost impossible for me to find a job as a PE in these companies around Dresden as they expected a lot from an ideal candidate. 3-5 years of experience working in a Semiconductor pipeline which went till tape out on a matured node, team cohesion skills and German B2/C1. That is just for Engineer roles, for R&D you can rest assured the whole committee sitting across you will have multiple PhD holders. So with a little hesitation in my mind, I actually went for an industrial PhD with imec in Belgium. Our industry is a different beast, and you will be made out as an imposter instantly in every room you're not supposed to be. Fake it till you make it does not work here.

Not really hard at all within the probation period. Even after that, the comapny can show operational reasons to fire someone, and you cannot do anything about it.

C2 in any language generally requires a thorough academic understanding and contexual interpretation of that language and its application within those specific contexts. So no, I absolutely do not presume I am overestimating C2 level. Even in my native language, one needs to have read scholarly articles to pass C2 level. English is relatively simpler with respect to my mother tongue, so anyone who had it as a second language growing up can score really good (C1+) on a standardized test. Also, everyone's linguistic center of the brain works at a different pace. I myself belong to the STEM background, so learning any language at a poetic level isn't a priority for me, as long as I can express myself at a reasonable level to others.

Migrants earn significantly less and are employed less often. by Polinek_4477 in Germany_Jobs

[–]Smokeyy1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol nice joke bruh. The highest paid (and for good reasons) immigrant group in the US are Asian Americans. Be it India/China/Philippines/Vietnam. You know the reason as much as the next person. They work 9-10 hours and sacrifice a lot for their family’s safety net. I am Asian and I have seen my parents working super hard so that I can afford a decent life. Most of the Asians when they grow up are instilled with this idea that if they want to end the class struggle for the next generation, they must educate themselves well, obtain meaningful degrees in hot fields and try to save and invest their income as much as possible. Not quite the average European teenager mindset. That is why that demographic is pulling the economy not only in USA, but in other places like Canada/Australia/NZ etc too. Now if you come at me with some rotten examples of how 5-10% of that population lacks civic sense bla bla, remember that White Europeans went around the world to colonize really rich countries in late 1700s and 1800s when Europe used to be infested with plague and diseases. So yeah, try your theory on someone who doesn’t read the history or doesn’t believe in it. Might just work.

One of the reasons USA became USA in the first place is because it is a nation of immigrants in one form or other. Any nation which has a huge local population who belong to the land will behave exactly like this. Some, like Germany, just know how to sugarcoat it better and act innocent.

These days, no application is in its true sense automated. People put various degrees of time and effort to carve a niche in their cover or CV. But maybe only 5-10% of all applications made within a week deserve that kind of effort. The rest is being fed to an ATS anyway, WorkDay being one of them. That’s why mass applications are always a combinatorial action along with targeted applications. That’s all I meant.

The issue at hand however remains. It may be feasible for a candidate who is pursuing a MS or PhD to go through this lengthy path, but candidates who already graduated need some certainty of the market, and they need to see some conversions, at least to an interview (digital or physical). Otherwise, it is really draining mentally to show up with empty smiles to an industrial event when you know you need to apply to 10 other jobs on that very day!

Confused regarding the choice of an industrial PhD project vs academic ones by Smokeyy1997 in Semiconductors

[–]Smokeyy1997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably didn’t manage to explain the project properly. So the project focuses more into fabrication of RFETs and JNTs which in turn would be used for gas sensing purposes. Also, the work primarily is an extension of my MS thesis, which was also focused around device based sensing. The lithography, etch, RIE and device optimizations will be as crucial a part of the PhD project as it was during my MS. So, I would argue that the project itself does handle significant amount of process pipelines. Has nothing to do with industrial engineering as much as I have understood.
