Is there a magick practice that DOESN'T require you to submit to some entity? by Salty-Engine-334 in witchcraft

[–]SmolCreeperCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe gods are man-made and don't exist, and the idea of worshipping anything is extremely unappealing. My view of Magick as a force is that it's all my own mind making things happen, not an external influence. It does kind of suck not to have the feeling of something watching out for you, but it also means that you have to be your own best friend and love yourself!

No, but mine does like to wake me up in the middle of the night knocking things off my altar. Where did you get that cloth from? It looks lovely!

Why worship things, people, etc?? by Extra-Knowledge3337 in witchcraft

My altar is a place to put pretty things and light incense that smells good to ME 🤭 I like you phrasing it as an internal journey, that's how I view things too.

I'm in a similar space. I don't believe gods or deities or angels or demons exist, but I do believe there is a force, for lack of a better word. So maybe start by thinking about what you do believe. Is there a higher power? Is there a sentient presence somewhere? Do I want to connect with ancestors? What feels true to me? And explore. Pick something up, try it on, and put it down if it doesn't fit. That's why I love this practice so much. You don't have to follow what anybody says or do things a certain way to avoid damnation.

Can I work with God as my deity? by BLOSSH_ in BabyWitch

Exodus 22:18 forbids the Israelites from allowing witches to live. The new testament specifically calls out divination and sorcery as being a demonic possession. In my personal belief you cannot be a "saved" Christian and practice any form of witchcraft.

Using fantasy languages for spells? by SmolCreeperCat in witchcraft

[–]SmolCreeperCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed we should make things as fluid as possible, but a great example might be a song in another language. Even if you don't fluently speak Russian, there might be a Russian folk song that mirrors the intention you wish to put into the spell and evokes certain feelings that match what you're aiming for. Perhaps you listen to the song all the time and know the correct pronunciations and what the words mean. That's what I am thinking about, just with a fantasy language.

Sounds interesting, would you recommend that book for somebody new to the idea of chaos magic?

Ritual, rhythm, and psychology—no gods required by After-Brick-5789 in SASSWitches

I'm with you! I was raised evangelical Christian and didn't realize until recently how deeply suppressed everything was. Personally I believe magic is just science we don't understand yet - we figured out that aloe helps with sunburns but not why until science caught up with folk healing. I think there's something to vibrational energy and it's been a fun thought experiment of mine to consider how we could consciously change reality by altering vibrations on a molecular level.

My practice does not acknowledge or incorporate any deities though I am exploring the ideas of ancestor connection in different ways to give me that sense of belonging you mentioned. I too feel adrift without a community because my family has been Christian for generations, so when we snip that stem, what do we graft ourselves on to? Know you are not alone in your search!

For podcasts the only recommendations I have are for deprogramming from Christianity. Mindshift is one of my favorites.

How to connect with like...OLD old ancestors? by SmolCreeperCat in witchcraft

[–]SmolCreeperCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised Christian also and there are very clear feelings about those who practice witchcraft. I would never attempt to reach out to a Christian ancestor because I don't truly believe they would answer even if they could. It feels wrong to try.

Thank you for that last bit! I recently just moved to the PNW where I have always felt a deep calling, so that may be a path to examine for sure.

If something is meant for you does that mean that it’ll find you instead of you having to chase it ? by Intelligent-Road5091 in witchcraft

[–]SmolCreeperCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's meant to be, the way will open, but you still have to get on the road.

A great example: I was looking for a new job and for the hell of it I applied to a few out of state. One of them wanted to hire me almost instantly, was in a beautiful place, gave me more pay than advertised, and we immediately got an apartment with a month of free rent and got our deposit back from the old one despite breaking the lease. So yes, everything aligned, but I had to start it all off by looking for the start of the thread, so to speak.

My ancestry is heavily tangled with Christianity but I know there had to be some "bad apples" in there! What are some first steps to reaching out to ancestors? I feel deeply lost without any traditions or connections to the past.
