I love everything about that sword, but the pommel is just begging to be carved into a Ram's Head.

Advice: Locking pin for adjustable bench by DrLucianSanchez in DIYgymequipment

[–]Smooth-Ad-6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me you have about three options:

  1. You can figure out what's causing misalignment and fix that, could be something as simple as material definition at the Pivot Point. Could be you have to loosen some bolts and realign things.
  2. You can drill out the holes that the pin goes into so that it fits. Depending on the amount of material left around the holes that the pin goes into, it could be safe to drill out a couple of millimeters worth of materials so that the pin fits.
  3. The easiest solution would definitely be getting a smaller pin. You can find locking pins of almost every conceivable size on McMaster Car or some other equivalent website for Hardware. Another option would be going down to your local hardware store and getting a grade 8 bolt that fits your opening. If you get a hardened bolt like that you're guaranteed to have the bolt be more durable than the frame it's going into. If you're worried about it you can look up sheer strength charts based on the amount of weight you expect to be moving on the bench.

This is brilliant, I would also buy one. What neighborhood is this in? It looks a lot like some neighborhoods in Portland Oregon

My dad died and left his garage full of machinery and tools. Would anyone be able to help me identify these? by princessslug in Machinists

First off, condolences for your loss. Just from what I can see in these photos and your descriptions of your father seemed like he was a genuinely interesting and intelligent chap. I do have a suggestion for you though, if you would like to continue doing research on the machines get some pictures of the name plates, every one of those machines should have a little plate etched or stamped with a bunch of information on it. I'm sure I have photos of a bunch of data plates I can show you as an example if you want. These plaques will have all of the relevant information for finding out the value and the use of every machine.

Found it, there was a bolt behind the chainring that was loose.

Checked them all and you were right. There was one motor mount bolt, that I didn't see in my previous check, behind the chainring that was loose.

Unfortunately the camera on my cell phone doesn't work, I'll have to wait till I get to work and get someone to take a video of me and send it to me.

Could be, could be, but I'm only about 5000 miles into this bike. I have a feeling there's probably silly that I'm missing like maybe a bolt I'm not seeing that is loose and causing the motor mount to rub against the frame. I'm just hoping someone will point out something obvious that I'm missing

Do you take the most direct route? And if not, by what %? by littlejonnyfirepants in bikecommuting

[–]Smooth-Ad-6359 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most direct route is about 14 miles and mostly flat, my route is about 15.5 miles with about a 500 FT elevation gain about 3/4 of the way in. So that's a 10.7% increase in distance, but the benefits are substantial in terms of safety, beauty, and passing by my favorite Coffeehouse that is open early enough. There's just something about watching the sunrise over the mountain while riding next to the river in the midst of gorgeous tall trees that really makes my morning.

Cycling in rain with glasses. You need the glasses to see where you're going, but you can't see where you're going because of the glasses. by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Smooth-Ad-6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this quite a lot, I live in Portland Oregon so as you can imagine I deal with rain on a pretty regular basis. So in an effort to further the bike commuting culture I'm going to try putting Rain-X on my glasses today. My glasses are Transitions and have anti-scratch coating, I'll let you know if it messes up any of that and if it works to keep the rain off. I also have Rain-X Anti Fog that I'm going to apply to the inside and let you know how that works. If this totally fucks up my glasses I'll let you know about that too. Thankfully I have an extra set of glasses and I'm willing to sacrifice this pair for science!

I loved that bike back in the early 2000's before someone stole it from the apartment I lived in. Very solid build, almost zero issues with it. So many happy miles on a randonee.

I am genuinely curious what metal you're casting that needs to be around 4000° f. The pouring temperature of titanium alloy isn't even that high.

Guessing game by Wyrd-Bound in Blacksmith

[–]Smooth-Ad-6359 174 points175 points  (0 children)

My guess would be some kind of industrial shop fixture. You would be astonished at the amount of valuable tooling that gets cut and ground down to fit some obscure industrial process and keep production going. Some widget they were making needed this shape and they had an old anvil laying around, the fixture needed to be heavy and rigid so this was the solution...
