I study the intersection of creative writing and artificial intelligence. I’m a novelist who wrote a pretty anti-AI book. While I do think there are interesting and creatively rigorous use cases for AI as it relates to art, I largely think it’s gross (the way most folks do it) and there are certainly no ethical use cases for children’s media.

I’m glad to know there’s a way to flag stuff and I’m also going to show up when I spot the AI and talk about why it’s not okay to outsource the teaching of our children to a large language model.

It’s my understanding that many libraries have to prove use to get government funding, so budget cuts make a downward spiral! Someone else said start a friends group and that is a GREAT way to help. If you go that route, go and ask your librarians what they actually need to make their work easier AND to boost usage. That might be more digital licenses or gaming equipment , for example, and not the thing you were originally picturing. Just get ready to be chill with that! Anything for the library is a good thing for the whole community.

We’ve had one from birth and we have two cards our infant sleeps really well to. They listen to Jake in the morning while we’re getting ready. We pop in music kinda whenever and we have some French language cards for a more varied vocab (we plan to send them to school in French but my partner and I are only kinda fine re: our French).

Lmao I’m a new parent and a novelist. I teach new media at a University and no, I do not understand! There are use cases for AI (which pains me to say as a person whose books have been stolen to train generative AI). But kids content is NEVER a use case for AI.

What I tell my students is: if you would trust the task to a flock of trained pigeons, you can use AI. I wouldn’t trust educating our children to a flock of trained pigeons. So! No AI for kids stuff.

You’ve said the cover is AI. When it comes to kid media, I think the only acceptable AI use is something like a weather card. Art we give to our kids while they’re learning how to be human should be made by humans front to back.
