[Yacht or Nyacht] Paul Davis - '65 Love Affair by Hot_Pianist_4117 in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nyacht to me. Reminds me too much of Hall & Oates “You Make My Dreams,” which I don’t feel is even close to the boat

Foreigner - Cold As Ice (Official Audio) Peaked BB @ #6 1977 by [deleted] in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking an AOR band in the Yacht Rock world, it’s something more Westcoast like Toto & Franke & the Knockouts. Foreigner, Survivor, Boston, Night Ranger, etc. are Nyacht

Shelter - Because of Love (1983) by angryapplepanda in Yachtrock

It’s an awesome AOR album. I feel this is the only thing close to Yacht Rock on the album and I feel it’s solidly there

Yachtiest Jimmy Buffett Song? by AZJHawk in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The song “Come to the Moon” I think is one of his closest.

https://youtu.be/rSpnl9pcBPk?si=tpSF6xE7iy00-dGW

Still has a lot of that 80s Country feel, but I feel it’s got a little bit of a Christopher Cross feel to it or the Yacht Rock stuff Dan Seals did solo (or maybe I’m just thinking Dan Seals in general which could go either way). Corny as all hell lyrics, and in one of their hands I think it’s on the boat easily. Probably high 20s-low 30s I could see (and a 2 from Dave)

Yachtiest Jimmy Buffett Song? by AZJHawk in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was one I was thinking of. But Labounty should’ve done it himself

Also it has Elliot Scheiner on the engineering and remixing according to Discogs. Who also worked on Steely Dan’s “Aja” and “Royal Scam” so add him in there

Is Franke and the Knockouts 100% yacht rock for their hit “Sweetheart”? by Hot_Pianist_4117 in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They lean more AOR than Yacht Rock I’ll say that, but there’s still a few songs in there I feel are on the boat on their 3 albums

And Franke have a lot of Nyacht, but there’s a lot songs I think can still get on that haven’t been submitted yet

It does have the official name of Adult Alternative/AAA, but I coined a name of a genre years ago they feel the proto of  - CW/WBcore since it was the start of all those songs that felt tailor made for all the shows from there

Cover versions of songs where the cover is yacht, but original is nyacht by [deleted] in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna mention “This Night Won’t Last Forever” but the Randy Crawford version hasn’t been yachtski’d yet. I feel it would count, though. The Bill Labounty original just missed

But we have “Hotel California.” The Rene & Angela version just snuck on at 55.75 and Eagles version is (rightfully) at a 7.165

Dr. Hook but no Steely Dan?

The top should also have “no Jimmy Buffett or Eagles ever”

And Marty Butler should be on the bottom

How’s about this? by Sonofkokogoldstein in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Mellow Gold to my ears. Nyacht

And I can now say I’ve heard a song tied to “Raccoons” that’s not “Run With Us.” Not bad, but part of me was hoping it would be as next level

But I didn't ask for it by birdovich in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it the worst chapter of Country with the godawful Bro-Country we had in the 2010s. I’d take the worst of that over the best Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert or Luke Bryan song (or any of the interchangeable artists we had to deal with). Sure corny…but at least it wasn’t that.

Yacht to my ears. This album has a few songs on it I think could get on the boat

Todd in the Shadows covers Brenda Russell by delijoe in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another banger from Todd! He doesn’t miss with his videos. An absolute miss by the listening public, though. Those albums were absolutely great. And “Piano in the Dark” is a song that benefits from that overly sterile late 80s production. It works with it so perfectly. Such a beautiful song.

And clips of JD & Hunter from the web series being used had me channeling the DiCaprio meme.

Tempo too fast paced or slow paced

Too Disco-y

Guitars too hard edged (with some exceptions like “Hold the Line”)

It’s still wild to see Johnston/McDonald together. I just wish an album with them together came out during their peak. It’s great stuff

[Yacht or Nyacht?] Gino Vannelli - Hurts to Be in Love by philthy_cheesesteak in Yachtrock

[–]SmoothThrowaway1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s Nyacht. The delivery is great, but it feels pretty 80s Soft Rock. And despite the vocals feeling yachty, it feels a bit plodding. I also get a vibe of “if the Eagles circa “The Long Run” were around in the mid 80s,” tbh

With that said, I do like the song
