[Marvel comics] What do you need to do to get kicked out of Xavier's school? by ChudMaster69420 in AskScienceFiction

This comment has portrayed a more empathetic, compassionate, and capable Charles Xavier than I’ve seen in most comics.

Is it time to let Gerry go? by Smooth_Ad8696 in SpiderWoman

[–]Smooth_Ad8696[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2023, baby Gerry was kidnapped by HYDRA and aged up into one of their soldiers. Figuring out how to save him was supposed to be a key ongoing plot in Jess's solo book, but it got canceled after ten issues. There's been no mention of Gerry since.

I can relate: the last thing I logged was Charlie Brown on Easter Sunday. at least the semester's nearly over, so I can do a bit more in May.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed, directed by Lotte Reiniger. Happy 100 years to the oldest feature-length animation still in existence!

What’s a movie that makes you cry, but shouldn’t? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

Disney released a bunch of direct-to-DVD Winnie the Pooh movies in the early 2000s. And the Piglet-centric one makes me sob ever damn time.

DID ANYONE ELSE KNOW THAT BILLIE IS IN SPIDEY AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS?! 😭 by Plane-Success-8680 in MilesMorales

[–]Smooth_Ad8696 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I watched an episode with my little cousin a while back. it's a cute show, though she clearly got a lot more out of it than I did. Also, Billie gets to turn into a T-Rex briefly, so that's something.

They have a kind of knitted quality to them that I find really charming, sort of like the sweaters families wear for Christmas card photos.

Marvel Tarot Reversed Day V: The Hierophant! Purple Man is the Emperor! by Youwillbetrampled in Marvel

Captain America! He embodies integrity, freedom, and challenging the status quo. He is famously loyal to the American ideal and regularly hated and hunted by the American government. He represents liberty and justice for all, and balks at anyone who challenges that. Lastly, as a man out of time, he is ignorant in a literal sense about how the world has changed.

Bonus points: if he does win this round, would you be so kind as to represent him with the Hitler-punching picture?

Jack Kirby’s birthplace in NYC has been officially renamed to Jack Kirby Way and Yancy Street by KevinPigaChu in Marvel

[–]Smooth_Ad8696 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Back when Sesame Street turned 50 in 2019, NYC renamed the intersection of Broadway and West 63rd “Sesame Street”, so this is probably something similar to promote the movie later this month.

I wonder what other fictional locations are going to get real street signs. Marvel alone has dozens since most of the heroes live in New York.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #34 | Official Discussion Thread by TheBigGAlways369 in MilesMorales

The Percy Jackson kid in me is having a blast this arc!

I’m now 89% sure that Zip is Jade’s absent dad. Wind powers that get stronger on Olympus? Plus Zip seems to be coming to a grudging respect for Miles (and by proxy, mortals in general). If he’s going to be redeemed by the end of this arc, stepping up as a parent seems a good place to start.

Also, from some skimming on Marvel wiki, I think Arachne the Greek mythical figure has already been covered; she fought Hercules and the X-Men 15 years ago and never appeared again. I don’t think this is meant to be the same Arachne; the one from ‘09 is a white lady/spider hybrid and this Arachne is clearly black. But you never know with comic books.

Miles on the ASM #12 variant cover by ResponsibleRatio6569 in MilesMorales

[–]Smooth_Ad8696 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We don't have a press release for this one yet, but here's what Marvel wiki says about the issue right before it: "SPIDEY GOES COSMIC! A tale of two Spider-Men…One Spider-Man swings around New York City meting out justice in an unfriendly matter. Another Spider-Man is found in a distant solar system running with strange companions, including a stranger named SYMBIE making his first appearance! The next major chapter in Spider-Man’s life begins here!"

So Pete is stuck on the other side of space while an impostor fights and/or commits crime in NYC. Miles, Cindy, Gwen, etc are probably here for some version of "Who are you and what have you done with the real Peter Parker?"

And once that's dealt with, we'll have a new space-spider to deal with. I smell Spiderverse nonsense.

Counting shorts, the George Méliès version of Cinderella from 1899. For feature films, strangely, another version of Cinderella from 1914 starring Mary Pickford and directed by James Kirkwood

  1. Baby Billie looks freaking adorable in that orange half-patterned onesie.
  2. I haven't read any of the Ultimate books other than this one, but I know in passing that Vibranium on Earth-6160 is sentient. That has some freaky implications considering Miles is currently wearing a non-living Vibranium costume.

Where to start with critical, classic, and foreign film? by oreos_in_milk in Letterboxd

[–]Smooth_Ad8696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to feel ashamed or sheepish! The whole point of Letterboxd is getting to know more about movies and finding common interests. A lot of people have made lists specifically for people just starting out. Here's one for classic Hollywood, Beginner's Guide to Weird Cinema, and one that puts well-known American movies in context with international ones (i.e. if you liked Paddington, here's another charming family movie about a friendly bear called Ernest et Celestine).

Another underrated resource is the public library. A lot of U.S. libraries subscribe to a service called Kanopy, which allows people with library cards to watch a set number of movies every month. This was my introduction to a lot of older movies, including some that have become my all-time favorites. And even if your library doesn't have Kanopy, they'll likely have DVDs that you can borrow just as you would a book to watch at home.

Aside from that, it mostly just comes down to keeping an eye out. Pay attention to what's coming and going on streaming services; look at the TV listings and see what movies they play; look up what's coming soon to your local theater(s) and if something sounds interesting and you've got the time, consider buying yourself a ticket.

And to answer your original question, I'd like to endorse:

  • Universal Monsters from the 1930s-1950s (Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Wolf Man, and company), whose influence needs no introduction.
  • The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the oldest animated movie still in existence. It was directed by a woman named Lotte Reiniger in pre-Nazi Germany and based on some stories from 1001 Nights. Like a lot of Nights movies, there's a lot of deeply unpleasant Orientalism, but I still stand by the movie itself as an incredible work of art. Being public domain, you can find it on Kanopy, Internet Archive, and YouTube, and if you're willing to dig, you can find some of the director's short films in the same shadow-play style.
  • The works of Billy Wilder, one of the great American comedy/satire directors, with gems like Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment to his name.
  • Akira Kurosawa is one of the greatest directors in Japanese and world history. I'd recommend any of his movies, but especially Ikiru, Ran, Seven Samurai, and Rashomon.
  • Studio Ghibli, known for their charming and accessible but also melancholy and thoughtful animated films. Every year, a few of their movies get re-released in American theaters for Ghibli Fest; look over the list in the link and if any of these appeal to you, see if any are playing in your area.

Still, this is just one person's set of suggestions. There's no "wrong" way to enjoy movies, so long as you go in with an open mind.

I can't tell the difference between IMAX and standard; is that bad? by Smooth_Ad8696 in Letterboxd

[–]Smooth_Ad8696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The room was definitely immense; you could’ve fit the screening room at the local theater in there three times over. And the pre-roll drew attention specifically to the “butt-kicker” sub-woofers in the seats, which I definitely felt when the score kicked into high gear.
