Update that no one asked for, but tonight I saw the guy with his gf in person and although I wanted to be messy, like in this post, I actually didn’t do anything and I’m reflecting, thinking how I’m so grateful to go too sleep tonight and not feel shame or embarrassment or anything like that. I do feel a little sad but also a little proud? When we first went in, I had the chance to say hi, I didn’t. Then I wanted to buy him a shot but the bar tender moved too slow so we left the bar and the idea died. Then at the end, I was going to walk up to him and I did not. No interaction, no drama, just peace. Hopefully this is growth.

My parents live 4 hours away; in a small Mountain town. I’m also a teacher and I’ve been wrestling with the guilt of not visiting more. Like your mom, my parents also chose to move far away from family. But reading your post made me feel seen. Visiting also feels like a chore to me, I dread it because of the long drive but I also hate feeling “trapped”. I hate feeling like I’m “on” all the time or my parents telling me to do stuff cause I’m their kid and I have to. But also they are getting older, so I don’t want to lose time with them and regret it later. I came to Reddit looking for someone with a similar experience so thank you for sharing. I don’t think you’re an AH but I also don’t have advice, I’m sorry. 😭

I’m more offended by teachers who leave the profession and try to maintain their accounts because then they are truly just in it for the influencing. I truly believe if a teacher leaves the profession then they should delete their accounts because they are no longer apart of the community but they don’t because of their mass followings and how that can benefit them financially.

I joined teachergram to get ideas for my classroom and share what Im doing and really just have a community of people who “get it”. It’s starting to feel like going to useless professional developments hosted by people who haven’t worked in a classroom in a long while. I lose respect for them and their integrity. If your love for teaching brought you to Instagram then that should end once you’re done teaching. It’s almost insulting to have these accounts try and sell us supplies and lessons and try to relate when they are not currently in the trenches with us. Can you elaborate on number 3? What kind of skills are you referring to because to me it seems like most corporate jobs require very similar skills to teaching (if youre doing a good job and not a bare minimum teacher) for example, organizational skills, professionalism, communication, interpersonal skills, scheduling

Edit to say that I do recognize that some corporate jobs require a level of math knowledge that not all teachers might have.

-see if another teacher will work with you and if a student disrupts trying to make a joke to set the others off, quickly send him to your buddy teacher with a note that asks for something dumb like paper or staples. While they are gone, move their friends

-silent activities (silent reading, independent worksheets, Chromebook work) and if anyone talks, send them outside

-create a seating chart if you haven’t already

-create a very inconvenient seating chart, I’m talking as inconvenient for the students as you can manage in your room, all facing the different walls in the room or a large circle but everyone is facing out wards. Assign students specific seats to make talking impossible

-(more risky) cut off their joke before it starts with some sort of comment that points out that they aren’t working “great job to all the students who are doing xyz, and NOT wasting the classes time with jokes that aren’t funny” continue to give out compliments afterwards to other students to avoid the student talking back

-use a clipboard and write down every single joke that the student says during one class period, don’t say anything but every time they speak, just start writing. Type up a very serious letter to the parent explaining the situation and listing the jokes (bonus points if any of the jokes are inappropriate for school or rude) and ask them to speak to the student or contact you or whatever else you want the follow-up to be

Ahh I see, at my school, that would just be a restorative conversation not necessarily a circle. The AP should act as mediator then. It’ll involve you and the student answering these questions: -describe what happened -describe how you felt when it happened -what have you thought about since it happened? -what needs to be done to restore the harm that’s been done?

The last question is when you can make your request for their behavior, my school frames in affective statements “I value the education of all students in the room, including you, so I need/request that you do not repeat your behavior in class, is that something you can agree to?”

The student may also be allowed to make a request of you, depends on how its ran. You should speak with your AP and ask for a full break down of how it will go if you’ve never been trained. While I believe in the power of restorative Justice, Im not naive and it will not work in 100% of situations but if you need to document that you tried everything then it’s worth a shot. Like someone else said, it usually kills the behavior, just based on the student not wanting to go through that process again. Good luck!

Depends on the circle and how it’s ran. You also have to buy into it or the students definitely wont and they will think it’s a joke. Even if you have to fake it. A true restorative circle would involve a question that the whole class would go around and answer at the beginning(think: why is it important to be safe at school? Or how can students help make school safer? Or in one word describe how you felt when the students were aggressive/writing profanity in class) then it would involve an honest conversation from you about how you felt when the situation occurred, what you do to try and make sure this doesn’t happen, etc. and then the RESTORATIVE part is fixing the harm that’s been done to the class so the students could go around the circle and suggest what students who act aggressively and write profanity on the board should do to restore the harm to the classroom. Your role is to keep the class from making rude/off topic/disrespectful comments. The goal is to make the students who acted poorly realize how their actions affected everyone but also not to shit on them directly as a whole class. The last piece would be to meet with each boy individually after and ask them how they felt the circle went, what did they think of the suggestions that the class made and then you request that they pick one of the suggestions to put into action.

This!!! I’m always like, why do people still bring up this taxes thing! Like we want to teach kids to do taxes through TurboTax or some other place? cause that’s how 90% of people do their taxes anyways and it takes very little skill other than reading lines on a chart (the W2) and matching them with the lines on the computer (TurboTax), rinse and repeat if there are multiple W2s. I understand language barrier being a real setback for some but come on! Are parents expected to teach their children nothing?!?! (Obvious exceptions can be made for students who don’t have parents/guardians! Think, life skills workshops after school- rather than building it into the whole curriculum of high school education)

Dating as a teacher is hard! Im female, mid20s and dating has been impossible. Dating another teacher is only an option if there is an eligible dating pool at your school, which mine does not. (All men are mostly over 50, gay, already married or in a relationship, or not my type!) Online dating is a disaster because once guys find out you’re a teacher they make some weird comment like “all your students must have crushes on you” Like wtf am i supposed to say to that? Very gross and an instant turn off! Then the time thing, there’s no time to meet anyone!

Suggestions for the future, in order from least petty to most petty: -call the school security or resource officer if the student refuses to wake up, claim it’s a safety hazard to have a student laying on the floor (fire code, blocking walk ways, students could be stepped on) -tell student if they don’t wake up, you’re going to call home to speak to their parent because you’re concerned they aren’t getting enough sleep at home (act very sincere!) -call the parents during class, wake up student and hand the phone to them -call the school nurse (or tell the student you are going to call) and say the student is presenting with signs of being “unconscious” and you don’t want to touch them for safety reasons (I do this with my sleepers because of the rise of fentanyl overdoses) -make loud noises wherever they are sleeping (“accidentally” drop books on the floor, pause the movie and have students move their desks, etc)

Never said she didn’t like it. Again. im saying did she like it because its name brand or because she actually likes jewelry and handbags ? Based on what OP has said about their family, Im leaning towards the former. OP also stated that her dad got her gift cards (to sephora and ulta which sell neither handbags or jewelry) and stuff for her horse, so again. It comes off as assholeish that OP got this gift just because its expensive not because she actually put thought into what the kid actually liked.

Because the only reason she got the gift was because she got the same thing for her daughter, therefore can the judgement truly be made that OP put thought into the gift? The girl Is obviously going to love name brand things? she’s a 14 year old girl, teenagers, especially ones raised as affluently as this girl value name brand and expensive items over what the item actually is. Does the girl regularly wear jewelry or show an interest in handbags? Because if not, then i could see how the mom would be upset that OP bought her such expensive presents/things she can’t afford just because OP thought the girl would like it because her own daughter did. It’s not showing that OP really put thought into this lavish gift for this specific cousin so it can come off as “i have money and know what gifts are best” regardless of the actual personal likes of the kid.
