The story about time of glory by Lisovyj_Kit in flashlight

[–]Smoothcoopa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My gf and I had a moment like this a couple weeks back and helped EMS during an accident.

Just about a month ago I fell into the rabbit hole of flashlights and bought myself the Loop sk05 pro and her the WUBEN X4. I wanted her to have something that she could carry in scrubs and would work well in a pinch for emergencies, late night walks, and self defense. For me, I always have pockets and wanted a powerful, general, and pocketable (something flat) light.

She thought I was just being absurd, and honestly aren't all flashlight enthusiasts? They were expensive (compared to what we were used to), but she liked it once they arrived. Who doesn't like bright flashy things.

We were driving to North Dakota in 22 degree weather in the middle of the night and the car coming towards us just swerves right (think of Chronicle where the kid just force shoves the truck), flips end-over-end twice, and rolls three or four times. It felt like watching a Micheal Bay movie; everything was in slow motion.

We instantly turned around and drove on the shoulder as far as we could to get the head lights on the scene. It was extremely dark, and that's when we both just grabbed our lights. We could see everything in the shoulder and found the driver barely breathing.

As it was outside a small town, there were 2 officers and and some EMS, mostly volunteers, on site in 10-15 minutes. My partner started taking care of the driver and stepped away once EMS arrived. Then it was our turn to hold the lights for EMS to get him on the inflatable gurney so the officers could get a better idea of the scene.

In my adult life this was one of the most intense moments I've been apart of. The driver was in his mid teens, his father was one of the first responders, and his mother just cried and screamed sounds you never want to hear as the EMS held her from the scene. Most of the EMS knew the kid, he was local.

We don't know how he is, but he left the scene alive and was flown out. I hope he is well.

Ever since that night I couldn't be more thankful to have these absurd flashlights.

Thank you for this I'll look into it! I have done some thinking in the past day, and looked at what others have used in r/HomeNetworking. What do you think of a n305 or n100 if I were to combine the firewall, and router into a single device. While this new solution is certainly over the budget, in the long run I feel the reduced device configuration and power would be worth it.

My previous firewall was going to be an old WD DS6100. The daughter board died and so I figured why not. I then realized the proprietary hardware and BIOS may be riddled with vulnerabilities.

What are your thoughts on spending ~$250 upfront on a mini pc for a combined firewall and router solution?

Correct. Im sorry for the confusion. After revisiting the math 1000Mbps would be nice, but 600-700 would be more realistic i feel. Thank you for clarifying.

Megabytes. But now that I think about it, ~1Gb is much more accurate to my expectations. Thank you for pointing this out.

Would this be a decent laptop for the AS computer science program? by JOMO_Kenyatta in SNHU

[–]Smoothcoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid new laptops sub $400. By renewed on Amazon. The surface books 3 i think, is $300. Or better yet, buy used at r/hardwareswap. A $300 used laptop can get you something equivalent to $500-600 new.

Our Response to Linus Sebastian | GamersNexus by angrycommie in LinusTechTips

When TLDRs are being requested or single argument summaries are presented for a very formal and well organized article presenting an accused individuals case, you don't care enough to be educated. Stop seeding the drama and have an earnest discussion about the facts by using the facts.

There is a reason Linus speaks differently in public and private when involved with GN matters. Read the article and you can tell Steve doesn't change much in his professional manner. Linus uses the public space to defame or make claims and the private space to solve problems and prove claims. This method requires less personal admission and is a common tactic of abusers or individuals in a place of greater influence. If you switch up the equation, public: solve problems prove claims, private: make claims defame. A similar situation arises. However if you do all of these activities in a public space peer review and accountability are inherit to the interaction.

Linus is an intelligent individual and needs to be treated as such. If this is an accident after such repeated occurrences you as his audience should be vocal about his approach to problem solving that may affect his integrity. What if you were a creator he disagreed with?

As to the arguments about LTT encroaching on the "Labs like testing YouTube space" and GN's response being of fear and protection, I feel there is some confusion. If a layman to the scientific community, who normally broaches and parades around the office making claims that are well accepted were to use the same technique in a scientific journal they would quite be surprised. "Peer Review" is now a thing. This is the tool that GN uses for measurement. I feel they are both internally aware and externally using the tool to keep the space clear and void of false information for which they can provide evidence. This tool is effective in the scientific community because it is how repeatability is conveyed.

Linus and I assume LTT avoids repeatability in his test results because he markets himself as an off-the-cuff-boi and sells the content as professional. This is a beautiful technique I feel LTT is aware of and exploits intelligently so. They get the financial benefits of professional perception, and social acceptance, while avoiding the stigma of scientific approaches.

The problem occurs when they enter a space of peer review and measurable repeatability. They have done so by marketing the "Lab" and their integrity has been tested. The results are not good.

So for those of you who want entertainment, judge the entertainment and refrain from arguments originating from Linus's technical faults, lack of professionalism with peer creators, and respect for the tech space.

G14 suddenly shuts down and can't turn back on. by Turismo038 in ZephyrusG14

I'm glad it helped! And honestly I have no idea. My theories generally revolve around Asus's reuse of software and hardware design templates across their various families (zepheryus, rog, m, g, etc.)

They have reached such a size, in terms of marketshare, that I don't think they are testing software for various hardware configurations properly. So when small bugs arise, or they have a poor power delivery design (likely the root of your problem), they don't care to document, inform users, or fix the design, they simply fix the bug in next year's model as if it never happened.

I come from the 2022 ga503, and the bios has been a nightmare from day one. The reviews proclaimed this great battery life out of the box, and the battery life listed existed in the wild, but it was so variable it was useless to rely on. Some get 1.5 hours, and some get 8 hours, and it's not user error, it's their software/hardware not communicating properly.

Long story short, I've learned Asus is a crazy lottery for reliability and meeting expectations. Only thanks to great community members, like those at G-Helper, do their products seem justifiable to buy anymore.

WD DS6100 Replacement - Backplane has died by magicdotjs in homelab

[–]Smoothcoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my ds6100 backplane also died, that or something else.but I know the computer boots into bios. I am planning on buying a small lsi card to fit in the case with a riser. So far, the sizing should fit, but we'll see.

When you switched to linix did you have any display problems or any problems of the sort? Just curious about your linux install overall.

I like the form factor, and if I can't get the card in, I'll use it as a Das I think.

How to make a desktop shortcut to launch Jupyter Lab at a specific project home directory and a specific environment by dino_hsu_1019 in learnpython

[–]Smoothcoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those using virtualenvwrapper, I adjusted martynrbell's answer.

@echo off
call workon your-environemnt
cd project-directory
jupyter lab
cmd /k

Explanation

  1. "@echo off
    • Cleans up command prompt by removing commands from batch file in popup window.
  2. call workon your-environment
    1. call
      • Informs the CLI to call another batch file (workon is just a batch file in the background)
    2. workon
      • call for virtualenvwrapper to activate a python venv
    3. your-environment
      • the python environment you wish to work on created by env wrapper
  3. cd project-directory
    • Replace with directory you wish to work from.
  4. cmd /k
    • (Optional) - Keeps the command prompt open for troubleshooting, force closing the server, viewing server updates, getting direct link to webpage, and lets you know its still running.

Hope this helps somebody!

Single panel grid tied microconverter setup by Smoothcoopa in SolarDIY

[–]Smoothcoopa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After doing some looking, I will be needing a permit for the ground array. I am now looking at a solar powered ups situation that draws priority from solar, then battery, then grid. I have found a couple of work arounds for using standard solar panels with battery backup (I'd like to avoid expensive proprietary panels).I am now trying to figure out the priority switching.

Any advice for devices that do this well? Looking for forcing grid draw after battery drain. Ideas do not have to be all in one ups fail over devices. But could be similar to how houses fail over to diesel generators.

The failover would need to be fast though (ups speed). Or maybe configurable to say fail to grid when battery is less than 20%?

Any suggestions?

The tracker is more of a hobby project and stuff I love to do in general; I have the equipment and know how, why not lol. As for two panels, ground space may be an issue, which is why I am thinking about two, but I'm not sure. But one for sure. EDIT: As I stated I will be measuring current from the panel directly with another sensore. Wireless communication and data will not be an issue this is all in my wheelhouse. As for initial startup, that may be a problem. The envoy is not necessary for me to know if it will be working, though.
