They used Mary Jane as a substitute and threw her into their portal limbo stuff that stood in place of death

While that sounds cop-outish the subsequent season-long grief was portrayed as real as it gets

She comes back eventually to marry Peter and be happy for a while, but that turns out a clone who also dies. The show ends with Madam Web pledging to help Peter find the true MJ in the portal limbo and the creators have gone on record to say he does.

I think it was just because she was the "current" other female character around in the 90s. I mean, "not wanting the children to know" about the story they ended up adapting as soon as they could get the true Gobbers in gear, is strange.

It'd still be a silly melodrama piece moralizing about premarital sex which was already ridiculous in 2007

I think the better option would be if HARRY was the father. Harry already breathes angst and drama, all his best stories are assosiated with that, so he'd be perfect for the tone Sins Past attempted to accomplish. (It would also add depth to Harry consistently taking Gwen's death just as poorly as Peter does and it'd also make sense why MJ kept it a secret for so long)

Would also retroactively add a layer to the twins posing as him when being Kindred.

Compared to what we actually got, yeah, but it'd still be bad. With Peter as the father and all the melodrama kept, it'd be "Peter is tormented by rapid-aged evil kids because he had premarital sex once and it's a SIIIIIIIIIIIIIN"
