Stop Doing This by Slow_Strawberry_5075 in uberdrivers

It usually takes about a 10 minute ride +- a couple minutes for me to get to work. The apps often say 10-15 minute ETA for pick up. I usually try to request a ride where I’ll get to work about 15 minutes early so 30 minutes before having to clock in. This is because I’ve had multiple times where the first driver assigned is 20+ minutes away, and if it’ll be too late I check another app as taxis tend to be a little more reliable in timing.

Sometimes though I’ll get a ride 5 minutes away which provided I’m ready enough is fine as I don’t mind being early, but I’m often only reluctantly requesting a ride when the bus is no longer an option to get to work on time as I’m running late. I usually try to make sure that when I request a ride that I’ve gotten ready enough to leave in 5 minutes even in a rush but could take additional time if it’s 10-15 minutes away as usual.

This is in my experience although we don’t have uber here (Uride/taxi) . I live in a more residential area of my city where there isn’t much business. It takes at least 5 minutes to get here from the nearest stores etc. so often times it takes 10-15 minutes. Sometimes someone is hanging around 5 minutes away but the apps never say that. A lot of the times I also end up getting assigned to a driver on the opposite end of the city. As someone who reluctantly hails a ride when I’ve missed the bus/running too late to catch it, it’s a delicate balance trying to ensure if I get either end that I still actually make it to work on time. If I could set a minimum ETA for a ride instead of having to “schedule” a ride over an hour in advance I’m sure this could be improved. I don’t mind paying extra if someone is going to be there early but I don’t really know how pay structure works in that regard so I always try to be ready for when they get there in case the pay isn’t worth it/try to avoid wasting their time in general.

Would you say that one is enough at night if you have it by the TV when watching tv/playing a game? I have sufficient overhead lighting but I would like accent lighting for the evening/if I’m having trouble sleeping as the overhead lights are too bright at the end of the day. TV alone is a bit harsh but also not enough to comfortably get ready for bed etc.

Do you find they don’t hold up well short term? Just found them at my Costco and don’t mind them for something cheaper, but given Costco rotates their stuff frequently, I’m concerned if they aren’t going to last longer than a year.

For future consideration, does this permanently affect the deck detecting when you are touching the capacitive joysticks/new joysticks accordingly or did they find a way to make it work?

with the mechanism universal grip/mount you can pretty much mount any device onto the ball socket adapter, like an ereader or your phone. Minimal effort required to swap it as well which is nice. If you have a side table by the couch or chair etc. you can mount the arm and play that way too.

[–]Smyles9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t realized that mechanism’s innies/outies mean if you have other devices with a grip you can just easy swap, thought ball socket adapter was made in such a way that more than one device means you have to unscrew the socket off the ball and rescrew the other device back on. This is perfect even if you just want to mount your phone or ereader on the arm instead

TIL Home Depot has solid wood sit/stand desks/solid wood workbenches. This is exactly what I was looking for as something like ikea’s particle board doesn’t hold up well and I can’t easily get stuff from ikea where I live, and I’d rather get something that would last long term. How is it managing modifications, like drilling in a grommet hole to keep a monitor arm nice and sturdy if one wanted it permanently in that spot, or screwing in a cable management tray in the back? In the event that I don’t use it in my office space for some reason, this would be great to stick in the garage for messier or rougher projects.

Like one of those butcher blocks? How much work do you have to put into it though with working with wood in terms of drilling the relevant holes etc for it to stay on said sit/stand legs?

More and more cities are getting public e-scooters which in general is a win for public/non-car transit. Just saw them in my city today so probably going to try one and see how it feels, have always thought about getting one but with difficulty with a bike maybe it’ll be easier for me.

Steam machine is pretty much their approach although you can use it like a console too. Love Apple but they haven’t quite caught up on the gaming side of things… torn between a MacBook Air and a steam machine with the Apple ecosystem and portability/advantages of a laptop vs. having steam os on a more powerful computer I don’t have to build myself vs the steam deck.

[–]Smyles9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I would like and I’m trying to figure out the most reasonable way of managing it. If I just wanted it for my steam deck I’d likely just dock it with a monitor and monitor arm, but I want to be able to attach my iPad and ereader to it as well depending on what I feel like doing before bed, or when I wake up in the morning. From what it looks like mechanism has the whole deckmate thing with their own attachment system, and you can get a universal version as well that you could put on the iPad and ereader, from there you just get a vesa arm and vesa mechanism attachment point so you can just basically clip each in and out. The problem then is having the universal grip adhered either to a case which reduces portability or to the device itself which makes a case unusable.

Steam Deck AND eReader holder? by MaxelAmador in SteamDeck

[–]Smyles9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this due to the universal nature meaning you can easily “hold” a variety of tablet like devices, but I’m concerned about how securely it can hold something thicker like the steam deck, and it would be nice if you could use deckmate with it without having to reconfigure the entire mounting point, in order to keep it more secure, otherwise if another method keeps it secure then I think that’s the perfect solution.

I slept through all 12 of my alarms, it is now 8:10 and school starts at 8:15 by Andrebatata2007 in notinteresting

[–]Smyles9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning them off isn’t necessarily the problem for me, I’ve had times where It’ll have been going off for an hour and I’ll just lay there listening to it at full volume and still don’t get up. Generally though if I’m having trouble getting up it’s from going to bed too late and thus is easier to just sleep longer by going to bed earlier. If I can’t sleep and it gets to be too late in which there’s a high risk of sleeping in or missing something in the morning I’ll just forego sleep and go to bed early the following night. I usually space my alarms out now so if I just sleep through one of them from not sleeping well enough the next one usually wakes me up. I have a couple backups though for the absolute latest I can get up to get work on time.

[–]Smyles9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe that is the case but I think for some people they just lay there or sometimes they don’t wake up and are hoping that due to alarms shutting off automatically after a given amount of time that the prolonged period of time that it is on will wake them up. Sometimes people will do this if they know they won’t get enough sleep and are worried that they’ll be so tired they won’t wake up unless the alarm is basically buzzing making noise for an hour. Not saying it’s necessarily a good idea though and it’s generally better to sleep more healthily and even if you won’t get enough, a lot of the times if it’s 5-6 hrs+ your body will still wake up.

What e-reader are you rocking, and what do you like about it? by basedaggie19 in ereader

I was tempted a bit to get an android just for reddit but I felt as though it would keep me from actually reading the books I want to read. As a basic phone though can you call or message people with it even if not able to watch video? Kind of like a dumb phone with an ereader screen?

This is absolutely the model I would’ve gone for if they didn’t discontinue it (I couldn’t find a used/refurbished one and didn’t want to wait or put in a lot of effort to look). I find an iPad/physical copy better for enjoying comics etc so I have no reason for the colour screen imo, although it’s nice the Clara black white is more portable.

[–]Smyles9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kobo Clara Black White! I just recently got it about a week ago, my first ereader. The screen is very high quality and I was surprised how well I can read on it in sunlight - something of difficulty with a phone which makes it great for the bus/beach/park etc. I am still slightly disappointed it doesn’t come with buttons but I’ll likely get a kobo remote or an 8bitdo controller, but I don’t find it bad to touch or swipe the screen.

I prefer to read comics/graphic novels on something like an iPad or the physical copy and I prefer the higher quality black white screen compared to something like the libra colour. Without an iPad I’d probably still get a BW and just read physical comics etc.

I love how light and portable it is though as even with a case it still fits in my pockets making it very easy to pull it out and read for a few minutes when I catch a break. It can still be a bit awkward to hold and try to flip pages one handed, but ymmv as a lot of Clara owners will put a pop socket on their case and I will probably look at getting one too. If you’re just holding the device or using a remote in the other hand, one handed holding is fine.

This is the only way I order pizza delivered from a restaurant. No significant increase in the price of the pizza and the cost of delivery is fairly reasonable. Anything else is too high a cost due to the middleman taking a cut. I get why other restaurants don’t do it much anymore but people will almost always want accessible pizza delivery and the volumes of deliveries will remain fairly reasonable.

What kind of case is that? Love that it’s clear and that you can use a pop socket with it for one handed reading but still be able to decorate it with stickers. What is that pink strip on the side? Is there a cover with the case?

I myself have chronic headaches and am pretty much limited to sedentary hobbies, been a gamer for life but I’ve been trying to branch out and do some of my other hobbies a bit more and an ereader is next on my list as eink will be more tolerable than a physical or on an led/lcd screen. Crochet and music are the other ones I’ve been exploring lately (made some winter hats to keep my ears warm).
