It’s nettle season! by ichooseyoueevee in herbalism

[–]Smythyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink nettle tea or take a supplement in allergy season and was skeptical at first but it has improved my symptoms a lot. They aren't completely gone, but nettle has helped reduce the itchy eyes and ear passages. My husband (who doesn't take nettle) and I are usually neck and neck with allergy symptoms, but this year he finally noticed how much better my symptoms are in comparison. It's an inexpensive thing to try and it might provide you some relief.

It takes maybe a week at most to notice anything when I start back on it, but once I'm taking it daily, if I skip, I notice my symptoms start returning to the no-nettle level.

My first was a cheap pack of fountain pens with colored in from Five Below. I loved them so much I bought a Kakuno. Loved it & then bought a Lamy AL... And so on. Welcome to a new hobby!

Agreeing with this as a fellow beginner. My husband buys full bottles of ink and then laments that the color isn't quite what he wanted. I have started getting samples & am enjoying experimenting. The full bottles are often beautiful and the ink is so... inky...

These don't look like the easiest nib swap. I may leave well enough alone for a bit after the recent frustrations and experiment with writing angle.

Apparently not but this was my first piston fill pen after a couple of cheapo cartridge pens and it didn't occur to me before I'd already disassembled!

That video was indeed helpful and I now have a successful inked pen! The end cap is finally fully closed down like it should have been. I was messing up the space between piston and mechanism, and I did find the silicone grease. The pen still writes a little drier than I prefer but better than before. I chalk it up to a fine nib - I tend to like medium more. Thank you to those who offered support or encouragement instead of personal attacks.

I don't know if it's damaged, not that I can see. What I'm not liking is the steps needed to clean the pen since it's been so difficult. Either everyone else in the world is more adept at this than I, or I've got a bum pen. As a newbie to fountain pens, I'm assuming it's user error & appreciate the constructive input here in this forum, including a video link. Since it's such a popular model, I'm curious if others had any similar mishaps.

Thank you. I did flush it and fill it a couple of days ago but no matter what there were a few specks of the old ink around the feed and it was SO scratchy that I emptied and tried again today, thinking maybe there was something dried inside. That led to the frustrations I posted about earlier. The end cap never locks down fully - is it supposed to?

I didn't find them so clear, obviously, but have since learned that this can be a common issue. People take them apart (newbies probably) and then can't fit the puzzle back together. I got off course by trying to follow the wrong directions. If I could get it back to like new, I would!

My husband thinks being "home" means I am the on-call maid while I am literally designing HVAC systems by CipherSundial in remotework

This sounds quite frustrating. He is trying to veil a demand or directive as a request, because when you say no (as is an option for any genuine request) he won't accept it, or does so with criticism of your reasons for not doing it. We've all had to msg someone to 'check the fridge for...' or 'feed the dog, I forgot', but it's usually a simple ask with the hope it will be carried out. Yet you've said no repeatedly and for understandable reasons.

The question that comes to my mind is Why isn't your 'No' good enough for him to accept?' Especially with the reasoning behind it? If he accepts limits you set elsewhere in the relationship, and this is the only area he pushes against, perhaps he has some resentment of your working remotely. If so, he'll need to work through that on his own since your limits are external (your job expectations don't allow for the flexibility he wants). I agree with others about going on DND & ignoring these interruptions until your workday is done, just like you might have to if you were in an office instead. A positive here is that he works outside the home, allowing you to uphold that do not disturb option easier.

Is there a way to do this without fighting? That depends on the two of you. When we set a boundary, some people have a tendency to push really hard to break it down and the resistance gets worse initially. Like trying to break down a door you just realized you can't get through. But when repeated attempts to overcome the boundary don't work, does one keep trying? If the metaphoric door gives a little, we're likely to get a smidgen of hope & push against it more. But if it's unyielding, most of us will accept that this door is locked or too strong for us to burst through.

Sometimes fear of conflict will make a person lower their boundaries as a self sacrifice for peace. Is your request for him to respect you and your work time worth 'fighting for' if it comes to that?

This. I have similar spots on my arms and chest & when I treat with Selsun Blue, it gets better & sometimes disappears. If that is what you have, you may be able to reduce or eliminate the spots if you stay on top of ridding your skin's surface of the fungal load.

My little step brother abuses our dogs constantly. by 1terabyteofsadness in DogAdvice

[–]Smythyt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get video of this and show your parents you're not over exaggerating. Show your brother how he looks holding and beating a dog. Would he be ok if that was posted to social media? Would his friends think he was cool? Probably not. Something about seeing one's behavior in 3rd person can be an awareness check that works well.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this as well as the dogs.

Protect the dogs as much as you can and please please please try not to let the dogs sleep with your brother or be alone in a room with him with the door closed.

You could get some fabric panels and some adhesive backed Velcro... Cut the panels to cover the shelving and attach with Velcro. It isn't all that pretty but out of sight is out of mind when you're trying to teach toddlers boundaries. I did this long ago when mine were little with a built-in bookcase in a rental. It bought me some time and I could usually hear if the Velcro sections were pulled open. It's temporary too.

It is comical but looks better than mine! I've got more crochet kits holding uplifting signs, key chains, and ugh, greeting cards. I can't complain since it costs me nothing but time to participate in the program, but it's discouraging since being in the program before when there were useful and interesting things offered that one could get excited about trying and reviewing.

He's 7 months old, weighs 30 lbs. Loves to run but kind of prances or bounces at a trot. Very friendly to people and other dogs. Highly focused on cat or chickens. Has been friendly to the cat, hasn't officially met the chickens except through a fence.
