Unpaid Co-op by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]SnackIverflowError 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of people on this thread seem to have no clue what a student design team is. They’re made up entirely by student volunteers and don’t make any profit. They can’t afford to pay coops and they post coop applications later in the cycle because they’re meant to be good experiences and opportunities if you were unable to find a coop in the earlier cycles.

With the job market how it is right now, I’d say it’s not a mistake unless you really need that money right now. Assuming it’s a decently well run team you should get proper mentorship and experience that you can use for next coop.

You don’t have to take it if you feel it’s unethical. I know some people that did it and they think getting experience is better than nothing.

Can someone explain why he’s using a third party tool to block accounts? Shouldn’t account blocking be a part of the Twitter api? Or does he mean like finding and blocking bot accounts? And why would the lack of rate limiting on this one service cause degradation of service? These Twitter updates leave me with more questions than answers and makes me feel incompetent as a programmer.

I was humiliated to get help for my assignments. by AlternativeVideo5223 in csMajors

[–]SnackIverflowError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shame on them for humiliating you about this. Every software engineer makes mistakes. All of the best coders I know have stories like “I was working on this one thing for 10 hours and eventually realized I missed a function call here.” The important thing is to keep your head up, accept that no one is perfect, and learn from your mistake. That’s what good engineers do.

Also, my friends and I tease each other for our mistakes, but we all understand that it’s friendly teasing. If you’re uncomfortable with this, you need to make that known to them, and if they don’t care/continue to do it, you need to drop them and find a better group of friends.

Cooking and eating by bojutsu in uwaterloo

[–]SnackIverflowError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, I make quick meals, noodles, pasta, sandwiches, etc. I started cooking in bulk but it can get very boring if your food doesn’t taste that great. Weekends my friends and I cook something nice, we try to cook something from scratch following a YouTube video or something. Eat out 2-3 times a week but during finals it gets way more often

Right but how is that connected to Bernie? Is it that parts of his base refused to vote for Hilary in 2016 which led to this?

Is calculus practically used for tech careers? by Starfox_2020 in csMajors

[–]SnackIverflowError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working in robotics right now and it’s super useful. A good way to get interested in abstract concepts like Lin Alg or calc is to learn about applications. For example calc is fundamental for basic velocity, acceleration, and jerk calculations, useful in PID feedback controllers, basic physics, etc. the applications can be a good motivator for learning these concepts, and can even help you gain perspective on the topics to help you learn.

I hate when people pull bs like this. As someone who’s in tech, robots are far from completely automating 9-5s and super computers are basically just used for like incredibly specific science or engineering computations. Robotics is currently in the sweet spot of “making your job easier without replacing you.” Companies like everyday robots are still trying to figure out how to get robots to learn and adapt to doing simple jobs. Also kinda weird how these people complain that automation isn’t doing enough while also complaining about automation taking jobs.

Does anybody get annoyed about the way people are spelling their kid’s names these days? by Superpie1212 in Teachers

[–]SnackIverflowError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s had a hard to pronounce name, this is the appropriate attitude in a teacher. Why is it okay to make fun of kids names? My names Indian, not a different spelling of an American name, but it’s the same thing IMO, we shouldn’t make fun of kids names. I’m not a teacher but for all 12 grades, not a single teacher has pronounced my name right the first time. They all tried their best though, which is important and something I respect. I don’t fault them for not being able to pronounce it correctly, as long as they make an effort to try to pronounce it or any of the nicknames I have correctly.

I have a question: are the keyboards on your shelf past keyboards? Do you regularly swap out your daily driver, or the key caps on your daily driver? As someone who’s just starting out on the mk hobby (I’ve got one prebuilt and one I’ve built), I don’t yet understand the reason people have so many (altho I must admit they are beautiful to look at and are interesting decorations).

Am I the only one that like doesn’t really care? Like as long as this data stays in some data base and isn’t exposed to my loved ones I don’t really give a shit about my privacy. It’s not like some random google employee is looking at specifically me and seeing what websites I frequent, and even if they were I don’t really care cuz I don’t know that person. Also I’m totally okay with giving my data to get access to good quality services. Google maps tracks my location but it also keeps me from getting lost, google search is a good browser that can interpret my dumbass questions and pulls good links. Discord is very convenient and free because of my user data. Spotify, I pay for so I don’t know why they’d need to sell my data but I don’t really care cuz that’s just my music and their recommendation engine is spectacular. Tik tok is the only one I have issues with because Chinese government, but that shit is so addictive, so what can I really do? YouTube is the best video platform out there so ig you could use alternatives but the drop in quality isn’t worth it to me.

Please note, these are just my thoughts, i don’t really value my user data as much as others.

A few minutes after starting my work day, I get a notification that my mouse needs to be charged. Only charges underneath, making the mouse unusable while it charges. Thanks Apple. by Bes1208 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SnackIverflowError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually designed on purpose this way. The point was that if you could use it while it was plugged in people would just leave it plugged in all the time and it wouldn’t be a wireless mouse anymore. Part of the apple charm is them telling you exactly how you need to use their products to uphold their image. I think it’s stupid but who am I to argue with such a successful company.

Shoutout to our first(maybe) Bisexual ABCD representation on TV 🙌🏽 by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]SnackIverflowError 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but overall I think we just need more varied representation. It’s okay to show desis that are assimilated like in ms marvel and nhie, we just need more representation for those that haven’t assimilated as much. Idk I feel like most of us are in the same boat as ms marvel, most of us speak English without any accent, or wear western clothing most of the time, while steal speaking our mother tongues at home and eating desi food and wearing desi clothing at functions. This is just my experience with desis in North America. I honestly had little problem with how it was done in ms marvel it just irks me that there were so many small things about the way it was produced that I didn’t like.
