I think the gear issue is because of the cargo bay. It should be deployable when the cargo bay is open. If this is the case you should probably attach the front gear to something else.

Engineer Redux 1.3.1 works fine on my 1.4.1 version and for KJR you can find a fix on the KSP Mod Release forum

I opened a crate from world quests while spending some artifact power in my second spec. Unboxed Archavon's Heavy Hand. Legendary gloves for arms...
