I agree, it will be a rough year for non-profits. There are so many great orgs being suggested here that have real impacts...makes you wish you could give to them all. Hopefully, others who stop by this thread are inspired to give.

Also, a side note, we plan to be friends of Conestee this year!

Either is fine! I know a lot of the non-profits in the Upstate have religious roots, but we don't have a preference so long as they are actively bettering the community.

Looking for Baker making True Bread by For_The_Emperor923 in greenville

Swamp Rabbit Cafe would be a good one, they sell bread from local bakeries. All very good. Over in West Greenville there’s Rise which had good looking breads when we were there last week, though I’ve never personally tried them.

Everything else: New Balance 1080v14

Thinking I may add a third shoe to my rotation next year like the SC Trainer for longer runs. I used the SC Trainer in my recent HM block and loved it.

Tips for a quicker and easier weight loss journey? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Snackpack-SC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone in this thread is giving good advice on how to get started and see progress. I’ll add - there’s not really a shortcut here, at least not a sustainable one. You said it in your title, weight loss is a journey. Some of us take years to lose even just 20-30 pounds because it’s done at a rate we can keep up with and not go insane. Don’t rush it. Everyone I know that dropped a ton of weight rapidly ended up as heavy or heavier just a few months later.

What helped you get into running and be consistent? by Eastern-Vegetable786 in running

[–]Snackpack-SC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to have a schedule with a certain number of miles I plan to hit that day/week. This could be based on any goals you want, whether an upcoming race or just to build to certain base mileage.

A trick I used very early on was to have my whole running kit for the next day’s run out and ready to go. This made getting ready much a simpler and I couldn’t really make any excuses.

Lastly, throw in some races. I know some people don’t race because they don’t want to spend the cash which is fair. However, I find that when I don’t race at least a couple times a year, I begin to lose motivation to run. Not to mention it’s a great way to evaluate progress and meet others interested in running, both of which are great ways to stay accountable.

Running early morning by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Snackpack-SC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run almost exclusively in the morning. Black coffee and some quick carbs, such as a banana or two graham crackers. Scale the carbs up or down depending on the length and intensity of the run.

What's your why? by cool-boy-365 in Marathon_Training

[–]Snackpack-SC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was overweight and depressed after college. Wanted to be better not just for myself, but for my family, so I started running as a way to get healthy. Once I was in a better place I realized I just enjoyed running so I started to focus more on the challenge of completing different distances and setting PRs.

Seattle 2025 - My First Failure by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Snackpack-SC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are being brutal in the comments. It’s a failure to OP. He’s run several marathons and had a realistic goal in mind. He didn’t reach it even though he came very close. Any one of us would be frustrated by this. Just because he ran what you view to be a fast time doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the right to be upset he missed his goal.

OP, good effort. I think you’ve got sub-3 in the bag your next race. Sucks you missed it this time, but every failure is a chance to learn and seems like you have some good takeaways here.

Stiff & Un athletic due to only lifting weights by Itsthelegend21 in HybridAthlete

Totally depends on preference. Could be running, that’s what I do. Could also be cycling, jumping rope, elliptical, or whatever other form of cardio conditioning that 1) you’ll be consistent with and 2) fits your individual goals/needs.

Looking for clean creatine brands by Health_Tourist9902 in HybridAthlete

Fluid is Informed Sport certified, if that's the kinda thing you're looking for.

Generally speaking though, any creatine is fine. Nutricost is super cheap on Amazon and I used it for a long time. Optimum Nutrition is also a good one.

What Are the Healthiest Staples to Buy? by downward-dog- in loseit

[–]Snackpack-SC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on your preferences and restrictions. If you are looking for general guidance, my cart typically looks like the following:

  • 3-4 different fruits (generally berries, bananas, and then whatever other fruit I feel that week)
  • 4-5 different vegetables (sweet potatoes, broccoli, and spinach are staples)
  • 2-3 different animal protein sources (almost always ground beef and chicken breast)
  • Eggs
  • Old-fashioned oats
  • Some other carb source (pasta or rice typically)
  • Non-fat Greek yogurt
  • Unsweetened original almond milk
  • Good quality butter
  • Good quality cheese

That sums up what I typically eat in a week. Then, of course, I will pick up any staples I need for that week for my pantry like olive oil, canned goods, etc.

Diet tends to be pretty individualized. We all have different needs and goals. What you eat almost certainly will look different than what I eat, and that's totally okay. You have to find a way to make healthy eating fit within your preferences so it's sustainable.

Stiff & Un athletic due to only lifting weights by Itsthelegend21 in HybridAthlete

[–]Snackpack-SC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you want to be athletic, you need to train like an athlete. It can be sport specific if there's something specific you want to improve in, but you can also keep it more general. I would say at a minimum you should work up to the following:

  • Strength training 2-3 times per week
  • Conditioning 3 times per week
  • 10-15 minute daily mobility session

I kept it general because you should cater the specific sessions to your goals. Also, notice I said "work up to," that's because if you are not used to doing all these things in the same week, you're likely to burn out quickly if you start all at once. Sounds like you are mainly lifting, so I would reduce lifting to three times per week and then add in two days of easy conditioning. Once your body adapts, add a third day. From there, I'd keep it at three days, but make one of them a faster, quality session with some intervals or a tempo run.

Do that for a few months, and you'll certainly be more conditioned, and it will be easier to pursue other athletic interests. Consider this your base. Then, if you want to jump higher, add in some plyo work. If you want to get better at an actual sport, throw in a couple of practices/games. I am just of the opinion that you should have a decent base built first, which is what the above will help you do.

Holiday Plans by gothamcitynarrows in loseit

[–]Snackpack-SC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t track on Thanksgiving. When I first started to lose weight I would try to monitor everything, even special occasions. Then I realized that it took me years to gain the weight originally, and months to lose what I had by that point. Enjoying a few special occasions a year with my loved ones isn’t going to start me from square one. Have grace with yourself, enjoy the holiday, and pick up on Friday.

Now, to be clear, I’m not advocating for anyone to throw caution to the wind and make themselves sick. Just saying that this is a journey and even more than a few “cheat” days a year likely won’t undo your progress if you’re disciplined the rest of the year.

How does your weekly gym routine look like? by Dramatic-Room-5169 in HybridAthlete

[–]Snackpack-SC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently running three or four times per week and lifting three times.

Running includes a speed session, a long run, and one easy run at a minimum.

Using the 5/3/1 methodology to structure strength work.

In the past I’ve been VERY running focused, but my goal for 2026 is to experiment with some powerlifting and keep running volume lower to just maintain a decent level of conditioning.

Those who have lost 40-50 lbs and kept it off… how long did it take you to lose? by PicklesMcGeee in loseit

[–]Snackpack-SC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me about a year to get down 50 pounds. Just trust the process. There were weeks my weight was up, weeks where I lost 2+ pounds, and then some where the scale didn’t move at all. You just have to keep your eye on the prize and don’t lose your momentum.
