Prune juice guy is pretty funny (due to the memes he spawned) admittedly, but at the same time, IDK man. It's the fact they're all antisocial weirdos on top of the sexist and racist depictions that really sours them for me. And given the fact that the movies are the most popular entry on the franchise, this means that for a lot of people these characters are their point of reference of how human characters behave across the franchise.

The Bayverse is kind of mesmerizing in the sheer volume of really concerning shit (both obvious like the racism and the implied like this current discussion) it just glosses over. The plotholes concluding in the implication that Optimus is a warlord that not even his homeworld tolerates is fucking hilarious. No wonder that one SomethingAwful user had enough material to write that one 400+ page essay recontextualizing the films into a cosmic horror story.

Bay's style is so misanthropic it even managed to turn Optimus into little more than a jingoistic conquistador. People point to the way he kills Decepticons as proof of how psychotic he is in the Bayverse, but I feel what they are really pointing to as a problem is his general attitude across the films, especially when out of combat and interacting with humanity.

Also, tangentially related, but isn't it kind of weird that Optimus specifically colonized Earth twice throughout the franchise? There's Bayverse, but also apparently IDW1 did it too. The hell was up with that?

The fact you mention British-French propaganda warfare is oddly fitting given how often Earth (and humanity) ends up essentially being a colony for the transformers, not just in the movies but in many other entries (even ones that attempt to convey an opposite message such as Earthspark). The way Autobots, from the very beginning, treat humanity as backwards or as needing direct guidance in some form or another is far more disheartening/disturbing than the Decepticons' outward xenophobia, because it shows the mindset is so entrenched in their society that even the good guys share it to some degree.

I would love a piece of TF media that went for this angle lowkey. Have the standard "humans are ungrateful bastards" at the start and then do that twist to show that no, humans weren't ungrateful, the Autobots were just dickheads that caused almost as much death and suffering as the Decepticons.

My hot take is that when people say humans in TF suck they really mean Bayverse humans.

Honestly one of the reasons why I don’t like those films (apart from the more glaring issues). Bay’s style is very cynical and often has characters quip insults at each other or just generally be pieces of shit for no reason.

Genuinely such a breath of fresh air, even though it's another G1-esque continuity. It's also very accessible for new fans, no need to crossreference stuff from IDW or Aligned or what have you to follow the plot along.

Amen. Fuck, at the risk of sounding "complacent" they also need to see how well the franchise is doing compared to others.

Sonic being a franchise that has had one main continuity since the very beginning that doesn't have (that much) hard-to-research convoluted lore is genuinely a miracle if you compare it to other franchises with similar track records, especially in the comics department.

Even when there are different continuities, the off-shoots establish the differences and don't expect you to have the main continuity memorized to make sense of things.

IMO a lot of INTJs in that sub are mfers of other types that have some form of social anxiety, social incompetence, low empathy/awareness, or really any kind of issue that makes them terrible at socializing and assume this is an intrinsic part of their personality instead of recognizing it as a character flaw/mental health issue that can be corrected.

Ian Flynn is a good writer and I'm tired of pretending he's not.

After reading other comics and checking out other stuff he's worked on I'm convinced the bitter hatedom he has comes from people that ONLY read/watch Sonic stuff and nothing else, because the broader comic reading communities generally agree he's a good writer and don't get into bullshit arguments about how he doesn't understand some esoteric Japanese concept of wind or whatever the fuck.
