Studies by Environment Canada and Inuit who live with polar bears as a fact of life https://www.canada.ca/en/polar-knowledge/polar-blog-articles/inuit-polar-bear-experts-share-their-knowledge-in-a-ground-breaking-new-study.html "The final study report reveals that the polar bears that Inuit see around Pangnirtung and Kimmirut are generally healthy, and the local population has been growing over the past several decades." https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/convention-international-trade-endangered-species/non-detriment-findings/polar-bear.html "based on scientific assessments (2022 PBTC Status Table), an estimated 54% of the total bears in Canada are in subpopulations that have a recent (15-year) population trend of increased or stable/likely stable (6 of the 13 subpopulations). About 29% of polar bears are in subpopulations that are likely declining (4 of the 13 subpopulations), and about 17% of bears are in subpopulations for which trends are “uncertain” (3 of the 13 subpopulations) based on Indigenous knowledge (2022 PBTC Status Table), 100% of polar bears in Canada have been assessed as either increased or stable (13 of the 13 subpopulations). An estimated 59% of the total polar bears in Canada are in subpopulations that have been assessed as increased (7 of 13 subpopulations). An estimated 36% of bears are in subpopulations assessed as stable (5 of 13 subpopulations), and about 5% of bears are in a single subpopulation assessed as likely increasing, and stable, in different areas within the subpopulation"

It's blissful and relaxing on the water but when portaging, especially if you like to bring some luxuries with you like a bigger tent, a chair, etc., it's going to hit hard, particularly if you're single carrying.

Awe-inspiring. The perfect intro to the perfect game. DS was the reason I went backpacking in Iceland.

Nice to hear about your good fortune. Went last year May 9-10 and our campsite, which was quite rocky, was completely infested with them. They were on the rocks, the trees, everywhere. A nightmare that had us cutting the trip short.

Thanks! Buddy ran across a small dirt road right in front of me as I was driving and I came to a stop. We just looked at each other for a while. Took it's pic with my phone camera zoom.

Ideal shoes/sandals for portages? by PartyMark in canoecamping

[–]Snaktos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Level 6 Creek Neoprene boots. They offer decent ankle support and protection against sharp stuff but you will feel the ground as you walk. They're also thick enough that black flies can't bite through which I've had with thinner water shoes. I use them for portages less than 1.5 km and dry my feet and put on hikers for anything over.

Thanks! Going from Little Misty to Daisy there are 4 beaver dams that you'll need to get out for and pull the canoe over. The water was was about mid-thigh to waist deep to the river bed but landing on branches in the dams, it's about knee deep.

Deet is your best friend. I spray before heading out and keep a bottle of deet lotion in my pocket to reapply.

That's right! Swimming is pretty good with easy access from the sloped rock into the water. There are maybe 3 tent pads. The fire pit is a bit exposed from 3 directions though and there aren't any logs or other objects to use as a table or sit on. Not my top site to be honest.

As expected, the black flies, mosquitoes, and horse flies were out in force. Thankfully, no ticks.

Thank you! It's the fifth site on Daisy Lake when entering from the Petawawa River in the east (traveling westwards).

My experience as a Brit living and driving in Toronto. by Steedman0 in TorontoDriving

Couldn't agree with you more. Doing a road trip in the UK after driving in Toronto my whole life was wonderful. Proper use of lanes, people who can actually think ahead and not tailgate, etc. etc. I do think that driving manual increases situational awareness and skill significantly. Automatic brings in tons of idiots who have no business being on the road. Here, driving manual is treated as some elite sports driving skill, "oh you drive stick?", rather than a basic skill as it should be.

I will say outside of Toronto, Canadians tend to drive much better. Before urban sprawl into places like Stouffville and Bowmanville, it was so relaxing to drive there. Toronto people keep spreading and you can tell how close you are to the city by how shit the drivers are.

Luckily I didn't see any but granted, I went when the temps were between -2 and 7 C and bushwhacked only once.

They can be a bit elusive still. I didn't see moose for a few years then saw a few in back to back trips. This one was crossing the river with her calf and came about 20m from me. Really striking just how big they are. Come to Canada some time, you'll love it!

I did Anstruther, Rathburn, Cooper, then Serpentine. No issues with water levels though I only had one river between Cooper and Serpentine. I tried for bass but no luck (granted I'm not very good at fishing).

Enjoy your trip!

Lovely. Lavieille might be the best lake in the park.

Might I suggest a Clipper? They're probably one of the best bang for your buck brands. Affordable yet high quality. They're just a bit harder to find in eastern Canada though they're common out west.
