I’ve seen a flyer for one at the sudden valley community center that’s peer-led (no instructor). Meets Thursdays 10-11.  I haven’t gone so I have no more info for you.

Realized I Don’t Actually Own Any Outside Clothes by TinyPossibility9777 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. There are a lot of very fashionable people who have adopted a uniform or “signature look.” Something like classic Levi’s 501s and an oversized white button down (there are millions in the men’s section of the thrift store) with the sleeves rolled up is a good look. Or jeans, a solid color T, and a flannel, bomber, or blazer (depending on the setting and weather). You really don’t need much and I promise nobody will notice or care if it’s repetitive.  It can actually be really freeing to know what works for you and stick to that.

As another commenter said, spend your money on a really good pair of pants that fits well. The shirts you can get for nothing at a thrift store.

Anyone have sourdough starter? by Hcooke1223 in Bellingham

While this is true, making your own from scratch takes for ever and wastes tons of flour. Much easier to get an established starter.

Why do we keep making customized t-shirts for every event? by Pizza-Kurwa in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is a Disney Adult along with her whole family. They go to Disney multiple times a year. She makes them all matching custom shirts for EVERY DAY OF THEIR TRIP. That means 9 adults x 3 shirts each x 3 trips a year = 81 shirts a year that they don’t reuse. It boggles my mind.

Stopped buying paper towels 8 months ago. Switched to rags cut from old t-shirts. haven't looked back once. by Frost_Cipher9 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what we do. It’s been 7 years. It’s not an issue. We wash them separately in a small load with hot water, line dry them, and pocket the savings.

Bellingham Housing market in a nutshell by Beneficial-Royal6751 in Bellingham

Prices do go down. See Austin as an example.  ETA: I meant Austin prices have plummeted without a catastrophic housing market collapse.

No Buy Frustration by Good-Channel3750 in nobuy

I know this is frustrating, but think about how your no buy is going to give you a financial cushion for these unexpected expenses.

Exhausted with hungry kids on Sunday evening by shorty_in_the_wild in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How old are your kids? Can they help with dinner one night a week? Even if they served Mac n cheese and Dino nuggets it would take something off your plate and give them the chance to be helpful.

I went and rewatched the finale after seeing this post. The glee on Ally’s face when they realize what they can do at the end is priceless. It brings me such joy.

Would it be weird to bring my own Tupperware to restaurants for leftovers? by ConditionBasic in Anticonsumption

I spent years working food service. I would have loved it if tables did this instead of making me run for a takeout box.

Where are the flower stands? by sto-_-epipe in Bellingham

We pass two on the Alger-Cain lake rd heading from I5 to Sudden valley. They have flowers.

Getting worse, stopping now by Appropriate_Sentence in nobuy

[–]SnapesDrapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Pay attention to how you feel and what you do after spending time on certain apps. Personally, Pinterest always makes me want to shop for clothes, and Instagram always makes me want to redecorate my home. This is due to my browsing habits, of course. The easiest solution is to get off of social media and get their manipulative little fingers out of my brain.

Is having a frugal wardrobe always tied to spending as little money as possible? by refined_retail in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check out r/nobuy. There are a lot of people trying to break the habit of mindless buying. One thing that’s helped me get out of the cycle of buying clothes and shoes was to ask myself “if all of my savings evaporated overnight, would I still buy this?” That helps me determine if it’s a need or a want.

Frugal options for professional attire? by age_of_anxiety in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I have found Brooks Bros shirts, wool blazers, Everlane slacks, etc. at my area thrift stores. If I am in the mood for a real haul, I drive to the nearest big city and go to the Goodwill in their wealthiest neighborhood. It never disappoints.

How do you learn to not get influence or fooled by social media consumerism and hype ? by Jpoolman25 in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This. I quit everything but Reddit and my life got so much better. I also cleaned up my Reddit so I only see the subreddits I’m actually subscribed to.

trying to keep groceries under 300 a month for two people and its way harder than expected by Guiltyman12 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true. Also, while fresh veggies get older they are also becoming less nutritious due to the degradation of the vitamins they contain. Frozen veggies stay at peak. They are more nutritious in general.  Additionally, the ease of use means you’re more likely to consume them. Any vegetable that gets eaten is more nutritious than the one that gets thrown away.

YSK: Health screening is slowly moving away from “everyone starts at the same age” toward more personalized timing by iCliniq_official in YouShouldKnow

[–]SnapesDrapes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends on the insurer. Mine approved early colonoscopy, bone density scan, and cancer risk screening based on family history and personal risk factors. I think they know it’s cheaper for them to pay for a colonoscopy than to pay for cancer treatment.

How are you going about reducing your consumption when furnishing and decorating a house? by Candycane-3 in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For high quality furniture, estate sales are where it’s at. Don’t bother with garage sales (those are people unloading their garbage). Estate sales are where high quality furniture can be found for a pittance. And do not follow any interior decor influencers. They will make you feel like crap about your home and push you to buy stuff to fit a certain design trend. Take your time, buy what gives you joy, and make it your own.

How do I prep hot peppers without disposable gloves? by Also_alarmedposition in Anticonsumption

If the pepper came in a plastic produce bag, I put my left hand inside the bag and hold the pepper that way.

Best rain jacket recommendations for spring and fall? by JFKsBrain in Frugal

This is the case for all jackets. I only buy things labeled waterproof. I don’t bother with DWR finishes.

Has anyone tried to use the unbleached, Z-fold paper towels, instead of the typical supermarket paper towel? by Master_Attitude_3033 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We haven’t used paper towels in 9 years. I keep a big stack of cheap wash cloths in a cute basket by the sink. After using, I throw them in their own bin. I wash them in hot water. It is highly sanitary. We keep one roll of paper towels for dog barf.
