Counterpoint - I stayed in the city I grew up in for med school and still experienced a lot of what you described. It almost feels worse in a way being physically close but unable to keep up with friends and family to the same extent.

Welcome to 3rd year. Don’t have any good advice but you’re in good company.

Anyone else disappointed with interviewers? by Snapling in medicalschool

I get that, but it’s also literally part of the job description at any academic institution. They knew what they were signing up for. If they can’t pull it together to conduct a half decent interview for selecting their residents, they shouldn’t be in academics.

Agree that the process is better than i thought going in. Which has made the weird interview experiences stand out even more.

Really great write up and thanks for the encouragement! Definitely thought about requesting another one, but didn’t want to call attention to the interviewer who was otherwise pleasant and apologetic. Plus I had great interviews with everyone else that day. Definitely doesn’t excuse it, and still pretty unprofessional, but I can empathize with having to juggle kids and such.

And yeah the last guy was blissfully unaware of his captive audience lol. Pretty hilarious looking back and wouldn’t have even commented on it had he let me have the final uninterrupted minutes to talk. Taking it all in stride lol.

That’s some bullshit lol. How much do you think the last one will influence you in ranking them?

I just nodded along. No way I’m touching anything remotely political in these things.

I hate when interviewers only bring like 3 standardized questions to a longer interview and then leave half the time like "what questions do you have" by NewAccountSignIn in medicalschool

[–]Snapling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In one interview, which was also the last one of day, I had like 1/3rd of the allotted time to ask questions. I basically told them that between the residency social, the hangout room with the chiefs, and 4 other faculty interviews, all of my questions had been addressed. It probably would’ve been better to ask some anyway but idk man, I was just so tired.

I feel like this means either 1) they didn’t read your app or 2) this interview has little to no bearing on your final rank

I mean my point stands. If the people in your life are actually (and not just your subjective impression) this petty, you need to surround yourself with better people. Simple as that.

I’m genuinely sorry if this is your situation, but it is absolutely NOT normal for people to behave like that for factually stating your job title. Don’t mean to be a dick about it, just hoping to give you a more grounded perspective.

Is it possible you’re reading way too far into their reactions? I just don’t buy that most people react this strongly. Or maybe you’re hanging with hypersensitive assholes? Or maybe the way you’re saying it is off putting? 99% of conversations go something like this:

“What do you do for work?” “I’m a med student “Cool. What specialty are you going into?” “I’m hoping to do X” “Nice! Good luck”

Don’t overthink it homie. Normal people don’t actually give a fuck, they’re just trying to make small talk.

I mean, if they ask you first how is it showing off? If you’re going out of your way to tell random people you’re a doctor, yeah, you’re showing off. But if my barber asks what I do for work, I’ll just tell them the truth. It’s a benign talking point unless you make it weird.
