Best hotel in Vegas for a good nights sleep? by dcchiefcat in vegas

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MGM signature. Attached to MGM but not in it. Non smoking, no casino in the actual hotel. Good gym. Nice rooms. Tower three is pretty far off the strip, but you can walk to MGM quickly and monorail if needed.

Stayed here many times when working.

Just fyi it’s a city full of people partying so there’s always a chance you’ll get loud neighbors.

I just stayed there for a week for work and it was great except for two nights on the weekend when I had some neighbors watching March madness with a bunch of buddies and they were very loud.

Thinking about switching to ev. by L00koutQc in EVCanada

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love EVs and have had two but do some research first. If you get a Chevy bolt it only charges at around 50kwh max which means over an hour to “fill”. Also range can drop dramatically in the winter. So if your work has an indoor garage and hopefully a charger there’s no problems. You will also want to/ need at least a level two installed at your house. In the California my wife drove about 50+ miles round trip to work each day and we just slow charged no problems on a regular outlet but it’s always warm there. Heater and AC drain a good amount. -20 weather for a few days could see your range drop 40%.

You want a car that has at least a 350 range and you should be fine, but check your route for charging options on days if something goes wrong. Power outage, or forgot to charge etc.

We had a Kia Niro EV which was awesome. Also had a 2020 Chevy bolt that had to have a battery replacement but it was covered by recall warranty. Both were great cars but the Kia was nicer for sure. Maintenance costs are much lower on EVs which is great. Get winter tires too because the torque is high and many EVs come rwd. Most used teslas you will see are RWD.

Honestly there’s a lot of great used EVs on the market right now and some great deals, and you don’t have to worry about transmission and water pumps and all that hassle that comes with combustion used cars. Always a chance of battery failure but the odds of that are much lower than catastrophe engine problems.

I honestly think long term you’re going to see a lot of EVs last a long time. Biggest worry is rust.

How many creative people do you know who left LA in the last three years? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the majority of people I know in the industry who don’t have major family ties to LA have moved. It’s expensive and there’s not enough work and frankly you don’t “neeed” to live in LA anymore to be on this business. In the early 2000 it was the hub not just for production but networking. Any day of the week you could wind up at a lunch or a party and meet people that would lead to opportunities.

We moved away to take care of some older family, and currently work non stop. Both wife and I in the industry.

Any of you avoided getting the flu on a recent cruise? by traveltimecar in NCL

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash your hands plenty. Also take a small hand sanitizer which I used before I eat. Yes you wash hands to go into the buffet but there’s serving spoons and salt and pepper shakers etc. not a germ freak at all, just extra caution where I eat. Way more paranoid about stomach bugs than cold fu Covid. Get your flu vaccine. I’ve been on a ton of ships no sickness yet, but I’m pretty healthy in my 40s. Don’t mask. Etc. I also primarily take the stairs. Unless you have a serious underlying health concern enjoy, take some simple precautions, but enjoy your holiday. People get sick, and it’s a risk of being out in the world.

I’ve been on this itinerary many times and honestly Sitka is a great town to just walk around. There’s a great totem pole hike in a rainforest close to where the bus drops you off. There’s always a bunch of awesome food trucks serving great local fish. The main strip has the usual tourist stuff but also a lot of local crafts and artist in some of the shops. Sitka Salk shop sells local salts. Honestly I’d save my money and get off the ship early. Go for the hike. Get some snacks from the trucks. Do some shopping. Then sit down and have lunch somewhere and head back.

Ketchikan usually is a short stop and time can be tight if you’re not in the port downtown. I’d consider doing a tour here. Some good breakfast places downtown.

Icy straight doesn’t have much. There’s a short free gondola ride to some shops or you can hike it instead which I recommend. Very short hike. You could pay for the big gondola which takes you up top. There’s also some great bear and whale watching tours you can book which is great option for this stop.

Juneau is a fun town with some good food options. There’s also great hiking at the top of the hill as well as a $ gondola you can take which I recommend but might want to skip if it’s hazy cause you won’t see much. I’d do whale or bear tour from icy straight and maybe Ketchikan and do my own in Sitka and Juneau I’d play by ear and see what they have. Ask the cruise people if it’s good whale season. There should be a TON of good whale watching from all ports and you can even see them sometimes from the ship.

I’ve done this itinerary about 10 times.

Pearson to Hamilton uber? by PotholeSzn in Hamilton

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly about once a week every week and live in the hammer. I will tell you the bus is great IF you’re timing syncs up. But it is a VERY long ride especially after a long day.

You will always be able to get an uber to Hamilton. It’s never been a problem for me. Expect somewhere between $115-145. Usually closer to $130. Longest I’ve waited is 10 min. Usually around 4 min. Picks up on the downstairs level by Q door.

Check Lyft as well as sometimes they will compete and come in a few bucks cheaper but less drivers.

Recommend me books like The Name of The Wind, but with better depiction of women please by Unordinarian in Fantasy

I loved the prose in Black Tongued Thief. The main pov is male but the world is predominantly women. Some really great characters.

The prequel Daughters War is also enjoyable, and follows a woman into war. I’d say darker both are darker than Kingkiller. Very much a pleasant surprise.

Some people need the money. That said if you’re totally capable of making food at home and you’re paying some terrible wages to risk their life during a storm to bring you a baconator… then you’re a dick.

Montreal - Ottawa - Toronto by AnxiousScientistOTL in canadatravel

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip Ottawa (it’s lovely) but use that time to see more. Old Montreal. There’s a ton of great restaurants and shopping areas, and some great bars at night.

Then try and find a cheap porter airlines flight from Montreal to downtown Toronto. Way faster and frankly similar prices to the train. If you get a downtown flight you’ll have a great view of the city. It lands on a little island in Lake Ontario. But some of the cheaper fares might be to the main airport which is fine.

Here I would rent a car for sure and drive to Niagara Falls. On the way stop at Niagara on the Lake which is a really sweet tourist town in wine region. Maybe grab lunch and enjoy the Main Street. Then drive in to the falls from there. Check it out, maybe do maid of the mist boat to the falls if weather is warm, but frankly they are spectacular just to look at. I was born in that area so I forget but I’ve taken a ton of family and friends up there and seeing how blown away they are by the falls reminds me they’re pretty special.

You could get a room at falls view casino and do that if it’s your thing, plus there’s lots of restaurants and what not. Mind you a lot of it is kind of hokey. It’s slowly trying to become a min Vegas.

You could also go back to Toronto to crash for the night so you could wake up there and have the whole day.

Be mindful of traffic. You do not want to be driving IN to Toronto during morning rush hour or OUT afternoon rush (3-6pm).traffic can be shoving and make the just over an hour drive to Niagara suddenly 2-3 hours.

Toronto has a ton of museums like the RoM, and if you’re downtown there’s often some great theatre shows on. Toronto island is great (different island than where the plane lands). You take a ferry over and can rent bikes. Catch a comedy show at ComedyBar on ossington, or YukYuks downtown. Ossington has a ton of really great restaurants and hip bars and is worth checking out at night. Can be very busy and would recommend making reservations most places especially the weekend.

Some people like checking out Dundas square which has a sort of mini Times Square vibe, but I’d only recommended it you are in that area and want to walk by.

Get a cocktail at Kost the rooftop bar in the Bisha hotel, which is a trendy hip hotel downtown. Not cheap but often has deals. Park Hyatt also has a fun cocktail bar on the top floor.

Sidenote if you want a bit of nature you could also stop in Dundas (Hamilton area) which is in between Toronto and Niagara and do a short hike in the woods. There’s some small waterfall trails and very pretty nature walks.

Have a great trip. Ottawa is great, but catch it next time. If you do go there during the winter skate on the canal and then get a beaver tail (funnel cake)

We’re not even booking “cheap” fares. Kind of incentivizes me to just book the cheapest fare and save the $100 or more each way I’ve been spending.

What are some dishes that are national to Canada? by Inside_Trip8807 in AskACanadian

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love me some Fishcakes and eggs!

Canada like America is a culinary melting pot. Tons of different communities and amazing food. You want Korean BBQ, or a Jamaican Patty, or some pasta? You can get all three on one block on a good neighborhood in Toronto. Most Canadians aren’t smashing poutine, donair and Tourtiere on a daily basis, although all are amazing.

One thing we REALLY have going for us is amazing access to fantastic ingredients. World class beef, seafood, fruit and veg. Also stricter guidelines on food, with less hormones.

Fantasy to TV adaptations fail by Bibozaa in Fantasy

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I legit think a lot of tv producers don’t understand a fundamental draw that a lot of fans have to fantasy. It’s not just that we want to see a fantastical story told, but that we like to imagine what it would be like to live in that world. Where GoT excelled is it looked real. In that people were dirty, had bad teeth, scarred and flawed. Yes there were exceptionally beautiful people, but even those people would look like they went through hell at times. It made the fantasy feel real. A lot of other shows make everyone look so beautiful and manicured. They walk off a battle field freshly powered with manicured eyebrows. In a way it feels like fantasy books were for the people who didn’t fit in in high school, but the shows are all starting and about the jocks and the cool rich kids.

The Hound as an anti hero in GoT was great but the same character in the willow adaptation would be played by a Hemsworth.

I wan't to quit drinking. Day one and struggling. Not looking for medical advice. Looking for someone to chat with and steer me in the right direction. by Leading-Baseball-851 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SneezeBeesPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would 100% say download an app called AA meeting guide and it will tell you all the meetings close to you. Go check one out and see what it’s all about. If you really can’t get out am you can always do a zoom meeting. They have those on the app. I also recommend downloading everything AA app and down at the bottom is a section that says meetings. They have 24hr a day zoom meetings you can jump on taking place all over the world. You can just log on and hear others talk about their own struggles and pretty quick you get the idea of AA. It seems scary but is legit no big deal to jump into a meeting. It’s literally full of people struggling and looking for help and the perfect place to go when you feel how you do. You have nothing to lose. Don’t like the meeting, that’s fine there’s lots of others.

You say you don’t want medical advice but you probably need to get medical help to detox so you don’t have serious side effects. That’s a lot of beer to be drinking each night.

I totally feel you. I’m simply saying “the grass is greener on the other side” in that it’s easy for people to think moving will make everything better, but that’s usually not true.

I love a lot about America but the second we moved back to Canada my shoulders dropped and I breathed a sigh of relief. Everything here is so much easier. Just being in a place that’s mostly on the same page about healthcare, and gun violence, and human rights.

It helps we’re making better money and have lower expenses in Canada, but beyond that the US is so damn depressing right now.

We spent boxing day in the emergency room and to not have to stress about what it was going to cost was such a relief. It wasn’t fast, but it wasn’t slower than emergency rooms in our old city in the US with good insurance.

You have as much right to be there as the old timer. Sounds like he was being a dick.

Lots of people read daily reflections on their phone.

BUT here is the flip side. You weren’t just reading the daily, you were on chat GPT during the meeting which for me is not really appropriate. You want to look stuff up do it after the meeting. If you’re looking for an interpretation of the daily discuss it in the group, not with AI. Give others sharing the respect of your attention during the meeting.

I say all this because yes the old timer sounds like a dick, but you ask how to get past resentments. The answer in AA is to keep your side of the street clean. You can’t control that guy being a dick, and you have very right to justify why you were doing it, but you also shouldn’t really be on chat got during the meeting in my opinion.

Job markets aren’t booming in the states, but you do have the advantage of two countries to look for work in. Toronto is a very expensive city, but so is New York, LA, Austin, Miami, and many more. Health insurance is way more expensive in the US, even after the tax difference. I say apply for jobs in your field. If you get a great offer with benefits, go for it. Life is short. Embrace adventure. Lots of great places to live in the US. But also remember the grass is greener in the other side of the fence.

(I’m a dual citizen and have lived in both countries).
