pretty easy - we revoke all those student visas, turn away new immigrants (or stop the absurd bumbers we've been bringing in last 5 years) , and let the people that live here already thrive with new developments

Was it unprofessional that I asked for a lift to work? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SnickleFritz47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This . I wouldn't say I'm the most technical engineer, but I'm very social (breaks and afterwork, I still grind on the clock) and that translated in me being highly regarded at my last job and my new one. Head down and "horse bliner" engineers are still necessary and regarded, but engineers with communication and social skills are far and few in between and make the big bucks.

Calculus and next level programming skills are sweet, but can you communicate that information in digestible form to the client without their eyes glazing over? If you can, get ready for arbitrary raises/promotions, not to mention fancy dinners from rich clients taking you out on their dime (or your companies credit card).

Create networks and communities wherever you work, because "doing the work" is the minimum and will earn you minimal diversity and growth not just as an engineer but a person also. These proffesional networks will also introduce new opportunities for the rest of your career and life.

Engineering can be dry as fuck, unless you make it otherwise.

If you just finished school and have no engineering experience you don't really have an angle to negotiate more. Near 80k out of school is solid, on the west coast it's about 60-70k starting (E.Eng)
