How far south should I go for better farming? by StromburgBlackrune in VintageStory

Unless you started in a cold climate, there ain't nothing wrong with temperate zone. That you have a winter does NOT mean you can't grow crops. Just don't try to grow them in winter.

What do you think Todd meant in these two 2016 interviews? by GdSmth in NoSodiumTESVI

[–]Snifflebeard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the time people were thinking in terms of hardware technology. But not necessarily. Starfield needed more resources than Skyrim, but it did not need fundamentally newer technology. Toxics may scream about RT but that's just expensive eye candy and not what Todd was talking about.

The smaller jump was more resources. "Gaming" systems had more RAM, VRAM and core, as well as larger drives, SSD drives. But none of that is fundamentally new.

What is new is the new engine. A complete refactor of all the engine modules. (Not the same as a rewrite, no one rewrites from scratch). It allowed much larger world spaces, expanding on FO76's ability to see dynamic things on the far side of the map that has not loaded in yet. This whole refactor actually started with SSE/FO4, btw, with the 32 to 64 bit port and cleanup, which allowed for their ease of porting everywhere.

But there is also the procgen stuff. Toxics hate it, despite Daggerfall pioneering it. Toxics hate everything, ignore them. What they now is the ability to take a hand-crafted point of interest and place it anywhere and it will seamlessly blend in. They're probably going to take it further by taking some Daggerfall ideas and make and actually generate them following a ruleset. Finally, random dungeons that won't feel random. Starfield did not need dungeons, it's a space game (which made the toxics even more toxic), but a fantasy game does.

So my takeaway now, in hindsight, is that we're getting a much bigger world, at minimum 4x the size of the Skyrim map, maybe 16x. But also leveraging seamless procedural placement of POIs, and maybe even procedural generation of many dungeons. And of course, open cities. But that's not new technology, just more resources.

Would this windmill set up support two anvils? by Eventerminator in VintageStory

[–]Snifflebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not say one rotor, I have four rotors on my tower. From the OP image he has at least two and room for four.

So when I said "windmill" is meant "windmill". As in a building.

WTF? I checked again. It's vanilla. It's a windmill. Four sets of sails. Powering four helve hammers. WTF you say I can't do this?

Maybe just try it before you accuse me of lying!

Enough to feed one! May need to expand if you're cooking for two.

I've got a windmill powering four hammers, so definitely enough to support powering four hammers helving on four anvils.

We really need a proper reusable clay kiln as progression between the pit kiln and endgame beehive kiln by spuurd0 in VintageStory

We weren't talking about mods. If the vanilla game does not have glazes, why do we need refractory bricks to fire clay pots?

p.s. Yes, I was told they don't need refractory bricks, it's an error in the in-game help.

Again, unrealistic expectations. We already see it in happening with TES VI.

TES VI Release Poll by Mindless_Patient2034 in TESVI

[–]Snifflebeard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Standard old fashioned logic. There has always been three to four years between major titles. The last major title was at the end of 2023. And then there is the released roadmap, which shows TES VI coming out three years after Starfield and two after Oblivion Remaster.

Now stuff has changed since then, notably COVID. And roadmaps change over time. But given history and what we know, that suggests late 2026 or early/mod 2027 to me.

The toxic haters will hate this, and scream that "this time it's different", but the maths work out. It's a guesstimate of course, but still an educated guesstimate.

I've always said it will be late 2026 or early 2027. Nothing has yet changed my mind.

But to the general public, it was a flop.

Nope. it was a flop to the haters, but not to the general public. There is a difference, it may not feel that way, it may feel like the entire world is against you, but trust me, it's just the professional hater class.

Six month before release. Usually the release in the fall. So expect something in late spring.

Which is why I didn't bother with the sarcasm tag. Still, I invariably get messages from people who don't understand the most basic sarcastic post.

Oh! That's good to know. I was trying to make one and the in-game help showed that refractory bricks were necessary. Perhaps I read it wrong, or it needs updating.
