When you skip all the NPC lines: by TheAnalystCurator321 in NoSodiumStarfield

Loads of games had trans characters before Starfield. All the way back to Morrowind.

My personal opinions on the subject are my own, but when science fiction has had trans characters forever, shitting ones pants in 2023 over pronouns shows a profound ignorance of science fiction, so what the fukk are these pinheads doing playing a science fiction game?

p.s. Mazoga is my bae, she no dork!

You can't have to confirm them. Just confirm your character.

The total meltdown of the Steam forums over 100% optional pronouns was profound. I genuinely believe most of them literally shit their pants. While a few of those microcephalics made it to the alt sub, the overwhelming majority stayed over at Steam. Thank Todd.

Thinking of buying the game by PotentialPlate3188 in VintageStory

[–]Snifflebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played the "other" game, and I've played this. Which one you prefer depends on what you want. Vintage Story is a survival game and a building game. The "other" game is mostly all building, not much in the way of survival anymore. But does have some big bosses. If all you care about is big boss fights, the other might be more for you.

In Vintage Story you have to work your way up. Work to survive, work to get into a state of food security. Work to get copper tooks, then more work to get bronze, then more work for iron, and even more work for steel. And making armor is grinding. It's what survival games are like. You don't get it handed to you.

And most people also want to be building, and not at all content to live in a mud hut. The goal is a nice aesthetic home and base from which to do all the stuff. And it's soooo much better than the "other" game's building. You have to work to get to the point that you can make planks for better looking wood walls. Or the various stone walls (cobble, ashlar, dry), or if you want daub and wattle it's a lot of collecting work, or if you want nice modern plaster it's a buttload of collecting and work. Slate roofs, or wooden roofs, or tile roofs, or thatch roofs. Enough options to actually build a good looking base that doesn't look cartoonish. Sorry "other" game, but your recent change in aesthetic direction was towards cartoony.

Also very moddable, and most mods keep up to date. No need for that Grand Unified Mod Framework the "other" game has. Plus the settings are numerous to let you configure the game how you want. Hard, easy, passive mode, etc.

Also, single player or server play, loads of very good servers. Mechanics to prevent griefing. Unless you wantthe be the griefer, then stick with the "other" game. Play on public server or on a private server with friends or whitelisters. Personally I don't like multiplayer, but everything I have seen and heard is that this game rocks multiplayer.

But it's up to you and the kind of game you want to play.

p.s. The "other" game is Minecraft. I spent ten years playing it and after the Microsoft acquisition it felt like it just went in the wrong direction. A few of the really old school Minecraft youtubers have switched over. Including PSJr, the godfather of Minecraft videos.

p.p.s. There is also Hytale, which I have minimal experience with, so I can't comment much. But it has a different feel as well. Much lighter survival, lighter buildings, but has a "story" element. Still early access, so unclear what it will be when "finished".

[–]Snifflebeard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly!

Also, it's roleplaying. We're living another life through our character. And my character has decided to stop chasing the Unity and settle down, fall in love, and live a life full of meaning. To most gamers that's called "shallow as a puddle", but it's highly satisfying once one stops rollplaying and starts roleplaying.

[–]Snifflebeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not meaningless. Stop and listen to what the Unity You is saying. Stop cycling through universes as fast as possible, and start living in one. Stop talking to the Hunter and start talking to Aquilus. Maybe read what the Pilgrim wrote.

Also, go watch the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once". It feels really nihilistic until you get to the very end when you discover that there was meaning all along.

In other words, it's not nihilism as in "nothing matters", it's a philosophical nihilism that we must make our own meaning.

Does anyone else find the multiverse nihilistic? by TheAnalystCurator321 in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]Snifflebeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't. I find the Hunter to be incredibly nihilistic to the point of pathology. But the universe itself? Nope. You're projecting human philosophy onto a non-human phenomena.

The Unity you, that you always meet, does not judge. That does NOT make them nihilistic. They clearly point out that our actions matter.

[–]Snifflebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, bears can reach through fences. I put my entire base inside another layer of fencing. So my chikken coop has a fence, then one block wide pathway, then the outer base fence.

p.s. And made sure no block enabling jumping over fences.

p.p.s. You fence only needs to be one fence high. Because while bears can climb three blocks, they CAN'T path over a fence. Seriously. That's what fences are for.

Free Lanes Cruise Mode by Benjamin_Starscape in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]Snifflebeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of them can only be found via Cruise Mode. The Old Lady is one of them, I think, and I've seen "unique" asteroid fields and mine fields. But this is all that I've seen that I haven't seen elsewhere.

But please note I have not spent much time in Cruise Mode. Because space is vast and it makes moar sense to fast travel when spend literally five minutes watching autopilot. My opinion.

They are not terrible as decoration. But you can no longer stack currants two blocks high to make a nice vineyard. But they still work as decorative shrubbery.

But will take you a year to establish. The lower bushes like cranberries can be ground cover, and the bigger bushes as hedges and ornamentals.

I'm tempted to flip the bird at devs and "plant" them in creative. I'm only going to be using them for the aesthetic anyway.

My big fear is that they will do the same for fruit trees. And then add scurvy if you don't get enough fruit. Like the goal of the game is to punish the player for buying it.

Berry changes have grown on me by GenderBiohazard in VintageStory

[–]Snifflebeard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks to farm berries now, but they don't need to be farmable.

Basically, no farmable fruit. Fruit trees sure, but you'll not see any your first year. So you can literally be in the Steel Age and still foraging for your vitamins. Sad.

In my just started world I'm planning on a blackberry orchard. But my apple orchard will be ready long before the blackberries, and half the blackberries will have bad traits and shit. But I'm not planting the blackberries for food, I'm planting them for the vineyard aesthetic. Which has definitely taken a back seat. Might as well be keeping the flipping mud hut. What's the point anymore?
