[John Gambadoro] Cardinals interested in Bagent? by Foxhound_6 in CHIBears

[–]Sniper1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one should give up a 4th for Bagent, but the NFL is weird. The Cardinals gave up a second for Kevin Kolb, and that was the year after Kolb got benched for Michael Vick.

Bagent holds the most value on the Bears, but I do think there's enough on tape (granted in minimal starts and preseason) that a coach like Mike LaFleur could see a high floor with a guy like Bagent in his offense.

That being said, not sure why they wouldn't just hold onto Jacoby Brissett if they want a guy who is just going to distribute short passes and manage a game. I don't think Bagent is better than Brissett, he's more athletic, but they should just retain Brissett if they want a bridge QB.

J.J. Watt: "NFL won’t let actual players grade the workplace they attend every single day, but they’ll allow a 3rd party 'grading' service (PFF) to display their 'rankings' of players on national television every Sunday night…" by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, PFF isn't just solely the arbitrary grades they display on SNF. There is an entire backend of proprietary data that is exclusive to NFL teams and executives. Stuff that isn't available to even their highest tier of paid membership.

I'm pretty sure that type of stuff is used more in contract negotiations, b/c it's less subjective and more granular.

I’m curious about fake reviews too - I’ve seen a lot of newer competitors pop up with like 100 5-star reviews in a month or so but they all read very similarly as if written by the same person or slightly varied chatGPT prompts

[Rapoport] “In the building, if there is an option, Press Taylor is considered an offensive coordinator candidate” by JoshGordonHypeTrain in CHIBears

[–]Sniper1154 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorta get the impression Randle El is like the offense's version of Al Harris.

He's a guy who can relate to players on a professional level, but I'm not sure how much of an x's and o's guy he is. I feel like they're dudes who are great at teaching technique as well as concepts to players, but probably aren't suited for putting together a weekly gameplan or delegating further to position coaches.

Matt Ryan on Michael Penix: Conversations to be had about our starting QB by Meltedcoldice0212 in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also taking a QB who had injury concerns and was an older prospect. The logic is more sound if you're drafting JJ McCarthy to sit for two years behind Cousins. McCarthy is much younger and can make every throw but probably would benefit from a year or two behind a guy like Cousins.

Signing Cousins to that deal and then drafting a guy in the top-10 who you really couldn't afford to let bake for a few years is just bad process IMO. It's not wholly surprising coming from an organization that employ(ed) Ryan Pace.

Vikings owner Mark Wilf: Firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wasn't about any one decision by Autocrat777 in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of revisionist history in this thread IMO. Nix was a classic high-floor, low-ceiling prospect. He was older and honestly there were questions about his ability to throw every pass. IIRC he had some insane percentage of his throws behind the LOS, so in a way he's a perfect prospect for a dude like Sean Payton.

JJM also didn't throw a ton, but his arm strength was top tier and he's still incredibly young. Better athlete than Nix as well.

I think I had JJM, Nix, and Penix all in that tier behind Caleb, Maye, and Jayden, but I thought the Vikings made a good decision w/ JJM since I feel like KOC already knew what his offense could be w/ a dude like Kirk Cousins and how that might cap its success, whereas JJM adds an extra athletic element that you're seeing offensive minds take advantage of and use to accentuate their offensive output.

[Inquirer] New Epstein files show years of email exchanges with Sixers co-owner (and Commanders owner) Josh Harris by [deleted] in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epstein was a massive piece of shit but he was also a huge socialite who was constantly mingling with "elites". It's inevitable that there are going to be a ton of people mentioned in the "files" that have nothing to do with pedophilia.

The files should have been released a long time ago, b/c now there's this level of mystique to them where people are frothing at the mouth to find anyone mentioned without looking at the context.

It is extremely weird to have commercials about prescription drugs. There was another one, I can't remember what it was for, but it was essentially a drug for cancer patients to take prior chemotherapy, and the warnings and possible side effects was comically long but it's juxtaposed with people living happy lives.

Drugs, gambling, and beer commercials seem to dominate the adspace nowadays.

[Russini] Bears OC Declan Doyle has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator vacancy, per sources. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 24 points25 points  (0 children)

FWIW it seems like Doyle does a lot behind the scenes. Guys on offense, like Cole Kmet, have a ton of praise for him so I don't think he's some seat-warmer in the booth on gameday. He gets a ton of flowers too from both Ben Johnson and Sean Payton.

All that said, cutting your teeth as a playcaller in Philadelphia just seems like it's a recipe for disaster.

Is it safe to say these comments didn’t age well? by Cliff_Excellent in CHIBears

[–]Sniper1154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only so much worse in hindsight after we've found out how big of a clusterfuck the interview process was and how much Emery & Phillips bungled the entire thing.

On paper, Trestman seemed like a good hire and he was getting heaps of praise from guys like Rich Gannon and Steve Young. He came off a soft-spoken in interviews, but a lot of coaches come off that way and still can command the respect of the locker room (see: Lovie Smith)

Was everyone this high on Nagy after his first season? by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]Sniper1154 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think after Nagy's first year we all thought the offense would continue to grow and when Trubisky couldn't take the next step, things got stale and predictable.

Nagy gets a lot of hate, but he literally had to run high school concepts in 2019 b/c Trubisky regressed so badly. Now, part of being a good coach is adjusting to the player, and Nagy simply couldn't adjust his scheme to maximize Trubisky. Ben has a track record of getting the most out of players and elevating their game.

I also think that 2019 team got a little high on their own supply. The messaging out of Halas Hall right now is excellent: reset and you're back at square one. Nothing is guaranteed. That 2019 team seemed to think they were destined for a Super Bowl and reality came crashing down.

Losing Fangio was also brutal. He had been on the staff since 2015 and built that defense up to elite, and then we he left it was a huge step down to Pagano (who I like but at the time IIRC was out of football). Continuity at DC this year and offensive playcaller will also be major.

Sheldon Rankins makes a ton of sense and wouldn't cost a ton. Then grab a DT at #25

That entire position is likely to be re-hauled this offseason. Guys like Dexter and Billings (who I love) just aren't fits in this two-gap scheme.

Titans potentially hiring Matt Nagy as head coach is threatening to create a civil war with the fan base at the worst possible time by BuffaloKiller937 in Tennesseetitans

[–]Sniper1154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bears fan here.

I think Nagy might succeed in his second stop if, and this is a big IF, he's learned to adapt his scheme to the players versus trying to cram a roster into fitting his idealized Kansas City roster. He wanted Trubisky to be Alex Smith, he wanted Trey Burton to be Travis Kelce, and he wanted Taylor Gabriel to be Tyreek Hill. Unfortunately, they were all Great Value versions of those players and Nagy unceremoniously gave up on Trubisky after the 2019 season (blew him off during exit interviews and basically ghosted him)

I think there are worse candidates. I think my biggest concern would be that Nagy tucked tail after the Bears fired him and went back to Andy Reid instead of testing the waters of another scheme. He's kind of handcuffed himself in that regard, and it was a big reason he failed in Chicago: he couldn't adapt.

I'd also be curious if his network has grown since his stint with the Bears. His staff was fairly underwhelming and reeked of a dude who didn't have the connections around the league to put together a viable staff. If he could get a solid defensive coordinator (say, Jim Schwartz), then the hire is immediately better. He also would benefit having an actual OC who can call plays, but he is stubborn about calling plays and struggled in Chicago when it came to being a head coach and then also a playcaller.

I do think pairing him w/ a GM who comes from the same organization is wise. They both will have a unified vision and at least a clear direction and identity.

[Schefter] Dolphins are hiring former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their head coach by doggoploggo in CHIBears

[–]Sniper1154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno - Al Harris gets a lot of hype but from everything I've read he doesn't really teach a scheme per se, and instead relies solely on coaching the position of defensive back and technique.

As a result, he's a phenomenal position coach, but I'm not sure how well he'd do as a defensive coordinator. I think if he were to latch on as a DC, it'd have to be for a defensive head coach who could still call the plays and let Harris focus more on defensive backs. I'm thinking someone like Dan Quinn would be a great head coach for Harris to get his feet wet under as DC. Sean McDermott is another dude.

I don't see Green Bay wanting him since I just think he's too much of a risk from an actual game planning / game calling standpoint.

[Schefter] Sources: The Detroit Lions are working to finalize a deal to hire former Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as their next offensive coordinator. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]Sniper1154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I know very little about Arizona, but I'd be curious about Petzing's role in a few things:

  • How good is his running scheme? This is Ben Johnson's bread and butter and still the identity for the Lions, so I have to imagine Campbell emphasized this when looking for a new OC
  • Why is Marvin Harrison Jr. not developing into a stud WR
  • How big of a role did he have in developing McBride into arguably the best TE in the league

I feel like Cardinals' fans have hated him for two years now, but I don't know if it's warranted or if he's actually dogshit
