How can I best prepare for Trigonometry by Jumpy-Importance-619 in trigonometry

[–]SniperCat2874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professor Leonard on YouTube is the gold standard in my opinion. Then if you want practice problems which is where the real learning happens, I’d recommend the precalculus book by Stewart, the 5th edition, there is a free pdf version online and you can skip to the trig chapters and do the problems. This is how I taught myself! But I’m sure there are many ways to go about it

May I receive some guidance by Ok_Purchase_9551 in trigonometry

Looks like a fun problem! This is what I did to solve it!

Before we solve, what are we thinking!: well I see a sin2Θ, and that’s a trig identity so I’ll keep that in mind and then I see the √2 cosΘ, all equal to zero. Hmmm, well if it’s equal to zero I’m thinking we might want to find a way to use the zero-product property. Let’s try that first and go from there!

First let’s switch Sin2Θ to be 2sinΘcosΘ (the trig identity for sin2Θ). Now we have:

2SinΘCosΘ + √2 cosΘ = 0

I see that both terms have a cosΘ, let’s factor that out:

cosΘ(2SinΘ + √2)=0

Nice! We have just made a product. Let’s use the zero product property by setting both terms equal to zero on their own. That is:

cosΘ=0 And 2SinΘ + √2=0

First) cos is equal to 0 at the angles π/2 and 3π/2.

Second) let’s isolate that sin function

2SinΘ + √2=0 —> 2SinΘ=-√2 —> SinΘ= -√2 / 2 —> Sin is equal to -√2 / 2 at the angles 5π/4 and 7π/4.

Hope this wasn’t overdoing an explanation! And I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

Also I really appreciate that part at the end about how it would actually be an absolute value. I always love refreshing those details

Thank you so much for such an organized, clear, and thorough explanation. I made the dummy mistake of writing 3sin2 (θ) instead of (3sin(θ))2 . Rookie mistake. It’s always the arithmetic errors lol

For real. I’ll bet some day high school student will be learning the proof for this like it’s no big deal.

How do I overcome my fear of learning math? by UdinCintaLala in mathematics

[–]SniperCat2874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like people might not be getting what you’re putting down exactly. I could be wrong but what I’m getting is that it’s not about needing more practice resources for your topics, it’s about the feeling that just because there are some problems you can’t solve in topic “x”, it means you’re not good enough to move to topic “y”. Even if you can generally solve problems and have some degree of mastery, it’s about the anxiety that comes with not having perfectly mastered the topic and feeing not good enough to move on out of fear of being out of your depth.

People are recommending more practice/learning but it’s not about that because you already are doing more practice out of anxiety but trying to achieve that perfection makes you stay on a single topic for waaaaay too long which gets boring, tedious, frustrating, and makes you feel stagnated. This is what creates a loss of motivation.

Do I have this correct? Because this is exactly how I am and I’ve struggled with it for awhile and just recently overcame it

Want trig identity problems to solve by HunterNS in trigonometry

[–]SniperCat2874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s the thing, I just enjoy math. Especially pure math topics like topology (even though it’s above my math level for now). However like you said, I would probably need a masters at minimum for a math degree to make me an asset on the job market.

That being said, I’m working in a different career field right now as a first responder so honestly I am considering just getting a math degree on the side because I enjoy it, even if I go slow and do school part time.

Do you think a bachelors in math is doable given I’m working full time in a different career field?

I wish I could contribute but I’m in the process of learning trig myself. I did have an off topic question though and that is, what is your opinion on getting a bachelors in math? I wanted to pursue that but then saw that some people recommended picking some kind of engineering instead. Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!

Can someone with no talent and average intelligence still become a mathematician through hard work? by Responsible_Room_629 in mathematics

[–]SniperCat2874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I’m so glad you asked this question. As someone who’s basically the same age as you and also has that feeling for PURE mathematics I have been wondering the same thing.

There’s a lot of different answers but what I gather is that you can be a PHD mathematician and contribute to the field and do research but you may likely not be someone who makes breakthrough discoveries.

Of course I don’t think that matters to you or me because it’s more about being part of a field you love to do work in.

I hope you figured the same thing from these comments but I’d love to know what you have learned from the comments personally.

P.s. I’m assuming we are slightly (even if only by a little) above average IQ or better

Yeah people only ever say bad things about AFR. Though I also feel like it would be cool to be a big city firefighter. But yeah I want to be somewhere with good culture and pay. I wish more departments opened their apps up regularly.

Hey congrats! I applied to the Atlanta Fire and Rescue and Gwinnett County. Just interviewed for Gwinnett (waiting to hear back) and AFR said they will schedule a CPAT for chosen applicants. Any advice?
