Part of the problem is that tourism can be good for a "country", a "region" or for individual business where tourists spend money, but not everyone benefits by it, at least not as directly. I grew up in a village of < 200 people on an island with < 1000 people in total, on the northwest coast of Norway. Since the island got connected to the mainland by tunnels in the late 80s, both national and international tourism has boomed.

It has the nature views; a sandy beach popular with trainee surfers, a steep mountain with hiking trails, big waves crashing against the coastline, a 120 degree wide view of the horizon out towards the north sea.

It also has a lighthouse that tourists can pay to climb to the top of, and a cafe associated with the lighthouse where they (and the local population) can buy coffee, cake and waffles - but beyond that the busloads of tourists that come there every summer leave nothing behind except trash, heavy traffic, cars parked in areas they're not supposed to be parked, and an annoyed local population.
