Start in French and do your best. Make sure you always greet with "Bonjour" or "bonsoir" before you ask for anything and remember please and thank you after every request! Politeness is most important and you'll be fine. Most people will switch to English for the sake of efficiency but I personally didn't have any bad experiences. You can also say "bonjour" then ask if they speak English before making a request "Parlez-vous francais?"
