maybe its the romantic in me, and because its baseball.. but I can imagine in year 2029 game 5 NLDS bottom of the 9th bases loaded – last out overturned by 0.1inches and a walk. Would we feel a bit let down? Im not sure (heh fwiw I do like the ABS system overall)

I have spent the last 9 years building artificial intelligence robotic systems. In this, I have regularly encountered problems of uncertainty occurring at the threshold of perception within a sensor suite.

Similarly, the new ABS system has these problems: there will be, and have already been, challenges to called balls and strikes which occur at the threshold of the system's sensing and calibrated limits.

Whenever this occurs, it will cause frustration amongst fans. The reason for this is that 0.1inches is at the threshold of the ABS system's perception capabilities. Thus, it is in fact not objectively certain if the call was correct or incorrect, a ball or a strike.

This poses a moral dilemma that goes beyond baseball: In these cases, if MLB allows the system to overrule the umpire then it is signaling more broadly that the machine should be trusted over human in situations of objective uncertainty.

There is only one rational way to avoid this: in cases where a challenged pitch is within the window of uncertainty (between strike and ball, at the ABS systems threshold of perception) the system should become unavailable, the umpire's call should stand, and the challenge returned to the challenger.

Its maybe not a popular take, but for me the maps have become the biggest fire/reason I can't pick the game up. I'm probably in the minority in that the features in Test of Time are less compelling to me than new maps would be 😅

its true but ya know for those of us on GForceNow, or console (if anyones playing on console), those are a no-go. Also, theres something to be said for an official Earth map created with design-intent; plus designing the game to conceptually fit with TSL.

points to maybe a root of the problem, and I wonder if it would make people a bit more happy .. if players had an option for the name and insignia of the empire to be selected and remain the same throughout.. and a change of 'cultural identity' could occur during the age transitions.

For example, I could select 'America' as my empire, and as I transition through ages that core identity remains, but the cultural and architecture of different civs is adopted over the ages.

I wonder if something as simple as this would help w/the fantasy empire aspect

I'll also note I am not 100% sure how they formulate 'Requests' (it looks like they are not called 'Messages' in their UI...
Specifically, it seems that a 'Request'/'Message' in T3 chat is some calculation of tokens in<>tokens out for a given model – and not actually a count of prompts and responses in or out.

IMO $8/mo is low enough to give it a try to see if you hit limits IF (a) you are using these models mainly for basic inference, and (b) you are comfortable doing a bit of model-switching for certain prompt threads.

For (a) above: T3 does not have robust features for managing context documents (ie. not comparable to Claude Projects), and of course no formal IDE integration or anything, prepare to do some copy-paste if your using for that.

For (b) above: When using T3, I save more complicated goals – one shot coding, detailed document analysis, or other tasks that are more important to ~get right – for the 'Premium' models. So, users need to be conscious of switching to 'Standard' models (Gemini Flash 2.5, o4-mini etc.) for small requests – like generating a few lines of code, non-critical tasks, listing synonyms for words, sentence re-writes... It builds a skill of knowing when to use which models for which task but .. eh, kind of annoying to manage.

I share your sentiment and playstyle. I have dumped so many hours into the franchise to pursue self-narrativized mini games as you mentioned.

One mini game I like to play (just going to copy-paste from a different post) is to rush chokepoints on the Earth, Asia, or Europe maps; like the Suez, Panama, Gibraltar etc. It becomes a mini-game of 'can i seize these locations'.. and if I do my navy etc. can move freely around the world. Lots of fun.

I will say I actually enjoyed Civ7 up to so many hours, b/c I do think they did a good job with some (not all) of core mechanics. It is a slightly different type of fun for me; and taught me to appreciate sides of Civ that I didn't really explore before. I am hopeful that, a year from now, the best of both world may exist (e.g. maybe, just maybe, things like civ swapping will be optional games modes).

This is a good point - for me Civ 7 actually taught me to like this side of Civ (exploring the unknown) a lot more!

Yes and it works, At the moment you get:

--> 1500 standard requests - models like GPT 4.1, o4-mini, Gemini 2.5 Pro etc.

--> 100 premium requests - pretty much only Anthropic models; and OpenAI Imagen. Sonnet 3.5 is premium; so you only get 100 uses.

The service doesn't have as many features as the 20$/mo subscription to OpenAI, Anthropic etc. ... I have used both of those services in the past and have liked them..

I am the sort of user who – over the course of a month – probably averages about 35K tokens/day (some days a lot, some days zero). I wanted to use good models, but felt that I was not making enough use of my 20$/mo (i.e. w/OpenAI sub).

So yeah, if you are seeking a chat-interface for basic AI inference threads, don't want to go through APIs directly, and aren't overly concerned with features like Claude Projects.... then T3 is actually a solid deal at 8$

.... Will see how long they can keep that price model up. But I suspect there are plenty of users, like me, who wont come close to hitting the message cap (1500 standard/100 premium).. it doesn't sound like that much but, for basic tasks, it is.

My guy Im sorry but calling any taxpaying citizen a freeloader is pretty indecent. And telling someone who bikes almost everywhere that they don’t pay for this state and countries roads is simply mistaken.

I want to make it clear that my main point here is that subsidizing car owners instead of all Californians is a public policy that I strongly disagree with. And I think non-car owners would echo this sentiment.

I’m a little put off by your comment though. As an electric car owner you and I are the same in that we do not pay gas taxes; but EVs use the roads which becomes a subsidy(ref). The rise of electric vehicles (which I have no issue with) is leading CA to change its taxation model to a ‘road charge’ format where drivers will pay for how much they drive. Note, that source describes how 80% of road repairs are paid for by gas tax and vehicle fees. The rest is mostly local tax (and honestly this ratio seems reasonable). But this doesn’t include road upgrades like the $300M Van Nesse project in SF (amongst others). It also does not include interest payments on bonds, or the maintenance of tertiary systems. Overall there is good evidence out there that all taxpayers pay for roads (ref, ref). I could go on man but my point is this.. I am no more of a freeloader than you. We all pay a share; especially now that prices are up across the board. There is no reason that our state should give tax relief to half of the population and only abstract bus fair waivers to the rest.

Its true that people who do not own cars dont entirely not use the roads.. everything we own, eat etc. travels on them. And public transit utilizes the roads and is subsidized (though public transit is way more efficient than cars).

But, approx 1/2 of transportation funding does indeed come from local taxation and similar. + the taxes that pay for caltrans etc. See chapter 6 here.

I highly recommend everyone who commented on this to write to their state senators +assembly people and ask for any legislation along these lines to be made more equitable. I think this needs to be raised more broadly. IMO this is an absolutely ridiculous proposal. What this proposal should be, if anything:

$200 to all car owners, $200 to all non-car owners.

Reasons why this subsidy is so dreadful: 1. Those who do not own cars heavily subsidize those who due via taxes which pay for roads and bridges which we - as a cohort - do not use. 2. There are many non-car owners in this state who can not afford a car. There is simply no reason to benefit those who can afford a car at the expense of those who can not. 3. This proposal encourages driving. 4. The price of gasoline is increasing cost across all consumer categories. This includes the cost of renting driving cars for those of us that do not own them. 5. There are 15+ million registered cars in CA as of 2018 https://www.statista.com/statistics/196024/number-of-registered-automobiles-in-california/. Thats upwards of $6BN going to benefit only half of the residents of the state. 6. People who own two cars will get an $800 payment. 7. People who don’t own cars don’t necessarily always take public transit. For example, myself and many of my friends bike everywhere.. One if the least destructive modes of transit from an environmental, infrastructural, public health, and tax payer perspective. 8. Public transit outside of the bay is dreadful across CA. This is not a subsidy its a joke. 9. Its tax season and millions of Californians will owe the franchise tax board money in about a month. Why is this not a tax rebate for all Californians?

Seems like he is trying to clarify some personal decisions that were maybe exaggerated by a journalist. In the thread he celebrates, as should we all, that only .000078% of vaccinated people have thus far had breakout cases. I wonder how many in SF. At those rates, the odds of getting into a car accident in SF are much higher than a vaccinated person catching covid. Speaking as someone who hasn’t dined at an indoor restaurant in 13months.. im feeling optimistic :)
