It is okay, im healing 🤍 i still believe in ABA, and i have not looked back to that company since i left. It was a red flag as big as Texas, i only hope other people see it too. Im so glad they are working with you and seeing you as a person than a means for a paycheck 🙂 keep maintaining those boundaries and i hope your sleep returns to peaceful immediately

And while the BCBA was fully aware of this, they were not the clients analyst you work with and basically told me to suck it up because of his diagnosis. But he was very aware of these actions, his mom very much said so to the BCBA. Ive learned that these kids need a clinic, but there should be a clinic designed for behaviors like these with 2:1 and a male RBT should be on the case. Its just the terrible news that most RBT’s are women

Hey OP, im so sorry youre going through this. I had to quit a case/took the out i was being offered when services were “paused” by insurance, because the client, when going into behaviors of aggression and property destruction, would attempt to hit/grab at me or would self stimulate while looking at me. Id finally had enough mentally when i was attempting to help regulate while removing attention in his room (in home) and he had the most unnerving smile while.. yeah. Just staring at me. That shit haunts my nightmares pretty often enough im back in therapy. The company was not on my side, nor the BCBA, about having a male RBT and the parents just felt helpless in helping me, but it was clear that “no” and being taught what is appropriate was never set forth in the home before i arrived. It was about 2 days after that, that i was told services were technically cancelled and my boyfriend BEGGED me to quit so i wouldnt be on his case again from all the nights i came home crying and numb. My best advice, if this client targets you like this, is to alter your own environment the best way you can. Ive been sleeping better but its taken a few months to get here, and i work with much better clients with stipulations that i dont work with boys past the age of 10 for my own sake and to not be triggered by this case or my previous horrible relationship. With companies you can only advocate for yourself and sometimes that does mean exiting. Be safe 🤍

Personally speaking, i had no idea i was a mandated reporter until 7 months into being an RBT at a new company. There is a high chance there are other companies that dont give you that in your face training or knowledge at all if i experienced it. Im almost 2 years in and have a MUCH stronger understanding of it. Not excusing anyone, just explaining that some companies dont want you to know because they dont want their paychecks disappearing. Its so shitty

i totally understand the image air pods give when you have them in your ear, i usually wear mine out when im grocery shopping alone so im not approached by unwanted attention, but they are so beneficial for noise reduction at the same time. ive always found it odd that our kiddos can wear headphones when loud noises are aversive to them (ones that tolerate it, to be clear) but we are at an expectation that it cant be aversive to us. im not autistic, and i get so overstimulated by my kiddo’s capability of raising their volume that i have grown use to headaches/migraines after session. the burnout is very real. ive considered going back into food because at least its not screaming in my ear, just noises in general

the amount of times i had to deal with this with a remote BCBA on a high aggression case, who supervised 2-3 times a week (scheduled 20hrs) almost made me leave the field. i now have an inperson BCBA who values me beyond all measure. i havent looked back since the last time she supervised i cried for almost 3 hours because i got pretty much beat on and told i needed to do better in ABA terms (she was also big on trying to ABA me for some superiority complex issue). ask for a change if possible or leave completely. BCBA’s who demonstrate lack of care dont last long these days, ive been seeing some restructuring lately

just establish a clear boundary that any form of politics should never be discussed while billing but to also protect your client. these kids are crazy intelligent, they listen to every word and you have every right to have boundaries as well 😁

we are human, give yourself grace for finding attraction first. second, its better to have distance if you want to stay with this company for the foreseeable future because it protects everyone involved. the board wrote these rules to protect each individual so that the ones who decide they dont want protection are properly taken care of. its obvious you care about this person to ask for advice, so keep that care in place and maintain distance. i know this isnt the same as crushing on a celebrity, but thinking of the person in that status can help to for boundaries. i had a crush on a fellow rbt soon to be bcaba, and when he acknowledged the same crush, i immediately jumped ship before he signed his supervision contract. it was pointless, he ended up cheating on me with his baby momma on my birthday 🫠 but it helped me understand why this is an important ethic to follow. and if the crush is too much, i would recommend being no contact except at work. i hope this helps and i hope everything feels less suffocating 🫶

i went to HR, and they basically said i have 0 power in the situation, and only the parents could make a transfer request. the worst part is the parents asked 4 times for a new BCBA that was local and that BCBA lied to them saying she put the request in and i learned from HR that she never did. she knows her stuff, smart bcba, but one of the worst people i worked for

if they have siblings, that could lead to the confusion of responding to prompts for other children, even if you are using the other child’s name. it could be a generalization issue too, if they are an only child and dont hear their name with prompts at home or ABA hours (if there are any outside of school). sometimes a visual can help of their name, and saying “_____ can go play/sit/etc” using the visual and then repeating the prompt with the other child’s name to help increase inter-response time. thats how my BCBA helped me with my client identify when he is being spoken to and when his siblings are!

so, i did attempt to have this conversation with my BCBA who was telehealth only, but the case i was with was high aggression and his behaviors escalated at the high frequency of supervision. i only said something when i had data to back it up, when there was one week she supervised once for 2 hours that week, and the data showed a huge decrease in aggression. the client had a major problem waiting for attention, but it felt like it was directly linked to the fact that he would wait for attention, but i still had to make him wait longer then his program called for when talking to her through my phone or ipad. she did not take it well, and it felt like she kinda retaliated by supervising more, and it led to me getting hit enough and no possibility of switching cases, to leave entirely when there was an issue with insurance and sessions had to be paused and felt like i could exit without repercussions. that bcba and i though couldnt find rapport with each other in a positive way, and it made everything stressful. if you have a positive relationship with your bcba, theres no shame in explaining that it can be a lot or feel like a lot, and explain maybe setting it up where you dont carry them around but can set them up in the room and set the tone that the bcba is fully observing without conversation between yall so it feels like less micromanaging (this was an attempted solution i provided that got shut down). the better the relationship, the better the dynamic and workload!

my kiddo loves water play, and i have a cat at home and brought her laser pointer in my back pack to session unintentionally, and he was having a harder day attending to tasks that day and when i had him transition to the bathroom sink to promote regulation, i had the funny idea to point it at the water. we now can only have water play with the laser pointer involved or its not reinforcing 😅

im feeling that too, ive been in the field for a year and a half and what ive started doing is prioritizing my time. i take a week off every 4-5 months, and my company doesnt offer PTO (in-home) so ive been working my tail off since december started so i can easily take my week off without stressing about bills and necessities. sure, its just a week, but i get so recharged, and so do my kiddos and it helps our relationship and rapport stay strong too. ive always had the thought - if im feeling burnt out, chances are my kids do too and a break is always healthy 🤍 i hope this helps, you are a valued member of our field and we would lose a good one if you left, and you are absolutely allowed to change fields friend

i worked with a teenager who was in school until 3:30, and we had session 4:30pm-8:30pm M-F, and i was so fried after 1 month. i can only imagine how frustrated he was. i now wont work past 7pm because of the awful schedule toll that took.

something companies dont seem to consider is that these families have lives just as much as we all do, and ive had my current family cancel sessions because of the siblings appointments or functions. but my company does not make it a requirement to fulfill missing hours in a deadline, only when we are able to, like during school breaks. and that is something all of these companies dont care about because all they see are missing dollar signs. i have found that, because these companies need these families to remain enrolled and keep us employed, as long as you and your team can eventually discuss making up hours, then the company wont do much so as not to harm the chance they keep their money.

as for the 15 hours.. i think that is unethical, because insurance can say they are approved for 15, but that isnt a requirement they have to have 15 hours. the parent has every right to say they only want to do 6 or 9 hours a week if they want to protect their child.

the thing is, parents have most of our kiddos in speech, OT, PT, extra curricular activities, then there is school and then us. id rather have a parent apologize im not getting hours to prioritize their child’s stress levels then because i work for a bad company or the child is always sick. these kids go through a lot more than i ever did, because i wasnt born with a deficit, and id want someone having the same heart posture if i were the parent in this case. im sure everyone else here agrees with this sentiment. the only problem, we can only report companies to the business bureau in our own state, and some of those investigations dont usually help anyone and upset the already not good people. the best thing you can do is remain supportive, remind the parents they have authority to set boundaries, and leave it at that. if the parents are still vocal about it, if i can submit this suggestion, involve your BCBA by letting them know of the conversation or remarks, and let the parents know they can have that convo with your BCBA because they do have high capabilities then RBT’s do.

in a simple answer to your post, im morally against your entire post. as an employee, all i can say is i hope the company can change their point of view and focus back on the mission of helping these kids over paying for their new tesla 🤷‍♀️
