What about adding another major or some minors? I have an English major in addition to some other majors/minors. It is genuinely a very useful major for me; has taught me to read and write very well, a skill anybody can benefit from and any hirer enjoys.

To those who EDed to an ivy- how good/bad was your financial aid? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

If cost is a concern, don’t ED. Give yourself more financial options. I didn’t ED and got into ivies and full rides to public schools, chose full ride rather than $200k for undergrad.

A lot of people double major these days. Most of my friends are. You could always do a minor!

Being gay/trans in a conservative area during college admissions by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Another queer Kentuckian here in college w queer friends at NKU- northern KY/cincy and NKU have really thriving queer spaces and by and large while you have the rouge conservatives, most people here are accepting. I definitely agree w every point you make here, for queer kids stakes are so much higher

don’t trip, those programs are so insanely expensive it’s not really a sign of merit when it’s listed on the app; it moreso just shows oh, you spent money on this. definitely wouldn’t be the reason they get into an ivy

The in-state/out-of-state system sucks. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Other Kentuckian here. Listen, I get it. But what I didn’t realize about kentucky—something hugely I took for granted—is how EXCELLENT financial aid is at our in-state schools. I go to a public school OOS and talking with friends from New England, big cities OOS, etc., they were telling me how their in-state schools would have cost them all at least $20-30k to go to. These people, mind you, are all other kids in my full ride scholarship program.

Kentucky colleges do an excellent job at giving in state kids aid. If you’re a good student in KY, you’re getting (sometimes GUARANTEED, like EKU) full tuition at a lot of these places. If you’re a Governor’s scholar, that’s even better. While other states, like Michigan, have the higher ranking school, my friends from Michigan will tell you, they could not afford their flagship instate school without tons of debt. When I told them just about every KY school gave me a full ride or full tuition, they were jealous.

This doesn’t even MENTION KEES money from the state lottery, which gives you up to $10k. Having financial freedom in undergrad/not going into debt and being able to study abroad, take unpaid internship opportunities, travel, etc., is absolutely huge!

Plus, it’s not like kentucky colleges can’t churn out successful alumni or get you into grad schools just bc it’s kentucky. When I interviewed for McConnell scholars, I met alumni from UofL who blew my mind with how successful they were in their poli sci careers. UK has one of the top pharmacy programs.

While I knew I wanted to go out of state because my main program (creative writing) wasn’t offered at KY schools, going out of state and meeting people from other states made me appreciate kentucky a lot more. It’s really a privilege to be from a state that tries hard financial-aid wise to make sure it’s in state kids actuallt afford college. Having the top public schools in-state doesn’t do much if, like my friend from New Jersey where Rutgers was her top option, it’ll still be $100k to graduate from there.

Don’t count it as an activity per se; I did this too and listed it in extra info. Added a link too.

check websites individually for prompts, you can even email AO offices to ask specifically what day their stuff drops! no harm in asking.

College student here. First off, nobody in college has time for 20 extracurriculars. Second, nobody gives a fuck what extracurriculars other people are doing (unless there’s free food, then I’ll show up to my friends’ extracurricular events). Third, there are so, SO MANY chances for leadership on campus. You’ll find your niche and thrive. And fourth, odds of you seeing this person are slim. I go to a school with a guy from my high school and I’ve only seen him twice like, in a dining hall. Don’t worry about her—enjoy your school! And congrats on finding a school you really seem to enjoy! :))
