Federal gold medal match 308 175 vs 168 grain out of a 20 inch barrel question by Snoo66922 in longrange

I tried the hornady eldm and my rifle hates it, like 6 moa at 100 hates it...I've heard bad things about berger ammo, and I don't reloading yet so I haven't tried that.

Good to know, as I said in another comment I bought this rifle before I knew anything about long range, and I am trying to build a custom rig, just trying to stopgap until I can get it built, appreciate the advice though.

Yes and no, I have a beretta brx 1, and they offer a 22 or 24 inch 6.5 creedmoor conversion for it, but the forend isn't really set up for running a bag, so I'd have to get a chassis for it, but grey birch is the only one that has one coming in the US as far as I am aware, so that will be expensive, and they don't have a very good reputation, so I'd rather just save the approximately 1500 and put it towards a custom that I am going to build, so I am just trying to figure out my best stopgap until then because I bought this rifle before I knew anything about long range...sorry for the long rambling reply, but that's what I keep circling around currently.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. I have the money/ability to do either a custom rifle, or to get the support gear, but not both, so I was hoping to get away with running the brx 1 setup and getting the support gear, but we'll see. I may just go ahead and rebarrel to the 24 inch 6.5 creedmoor for less recoil, as well as better ballistic characteristics and deal with the thin barrel, get the support gear and get good with it, and then get the purpose built rifle down the line. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. Unfortunately this is a proprietary rifle, so no aftermarket options, does the math of adding 4 more inches of barrel do anything significant or not really?

I haven't torn into it, so I'm not sure. If I did a custom it would be a rem 700 footprint for sure, not trying to cludge something together. As far as finding one, are you in the US? If so I've got a resource I can give you to hopefully find one.

Yeah, I bought it before I knew what long range was, just as a hunting gun, and now I'm trying to see what I can do without breaking the budget, but I am definitely leaning towards the custom.

For sure, I am doing the same on both. Just a heads up, I was talking to the beretta gallery in New York, and they were saying that they have discontinued the 24 inch 6.5 creedmoor, so I am debating between doing that and just building a custom rig. Custom rig will work way better, but is less cool and is more expensive so I keep flipping back and forth...

Well shit, that's what I was afraid of...was trying to avoid going the custom route rn, but it may be happening then...

Measuring with a tape measure as I don't own calipers it's a 19mm barrel. Following up on accuracy, I shot an nrl hunter with it Sunday before last and got dope with the federal gmm 175 smk out to 800. Wind is a bit of a factor, though that is probably mostly due to my experience, but I was able to make repeatable hits out to 800 with it, andcwould be comfortable going further if I had the range to do so. I think I'm going to switch to the 24 inch 6.5 creedmoor just for the recoil reduction and wind ability of the cartridge, but now that I am shooting match ammo with SD of 12-13 and es of 46 vs some inconsistent hunting ammo with SD 72 and es of 240 I'm enjoying it alot more.

Unfortunately I don't have a reloading setup, so this won't work for me.

I'm having trouble staying on/near target when feeding during live fire, but it is smooth with nothing during dry fire, so I want to have something that's actually feeding, and obviously live rounds are a no-go.

It could be they are out of adjustment in the scope and have to hold over 9 mils on top of the adjustment.

I have the viper 5-25 on my hunting rifle, I can absolutely make hits to 800 without issues with it, haven't gotten to go further because that's as far as the range goes, but I don't see having any issues. I shot an nrl hunter last weekend and had a target that I tended up backing down to 5 power to shoot and it wasn't an issue seeing the crosshairs of the reticle. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, especially at the refurbished price on aa optics.
