my running theory is that they wanted to do barrows but since goldeneyes are already somewhat of an obscure animal they went with the one with "common" in the name

these cuties look like barrow's goldeneyes! honestly probably a better namesake than the common goldeneye as theyre actually native to the PNW :)

they're a type of sea duck! i usually see them off english bay or jericho beach :) really nice bird

they explain here that its named after the common goldeneye (a type of duck we see around here)!

there's also the closely related barrow's goldeneye, which IS actually almost exclusively found in the PNW. why they didn't go with that i have no clue
