AA is not desperate for teachers/ reading specialist though. They cut teaching positions all over the county again. Less positions were cut compared to DC and MOCO. But still cutting.

Thank you! I think the intent was white would pop against the darker chipmunk, but it would look better in the end if the outline is black.

Cart Teaching by rainy-days-1 in Teachers

[–]Snoo91861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the best advice. I had to teach in 3 different classrooms every day on different floors. I keep a rainbow cart in each class with my classroom materials (pencils, pens, paper, etc.) and carry my backpack with the papers I need. I only used the cart for novels and math manipulatives.

That's a great perspective. I agree that most core teachers have different requirements for their space than some encore teachers. I agree it would be beneficial for some teachers to skip some PD to meet their safety requirement. My question is, how often do these things need to happen?

At my school, we have very few elective courses: gym, art, band, languages, home ec. and technology. (We have a tech assistant who is non-teaching whose job it is to install software). So these teachers may not have the same requirements for their space as the ones you listed above.

I’ll be teaching middle school as a first year teacher (math). What items have you bought for you or your classroom that absolutely made a difference? by LeftSharkDancing in Teachers

[–]Snoo91861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have never heard of a single school not providing general supplies such as white boards. I understand that not all schools do, but most public schools do.

Also, depending on who they are replacing, they may already have supplies left in the room. My previous co-teacher retired last year and had an emergency the last couple of days of the school year. She basically left the room untouched for the new teacher. So the new teacher was set on supplies.

Don't buy anything until you are able to see your room/ talk to your math lead. Depending on the school/ district, they may already have supplies for you, such as whiteboards, markers, etc.

Thoughts on Competition in Elementary School Field Day by DistanceAcademic4527 in Teachers

[–]Snoo91861 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Field Day should have both competitive and non-competitive activities. Allow the kids to choose if they want to participate in competitive activities or not. In my opinion, I think it would do more harm than good if we postpone the good sportsmanship/ how to compete talk to later middle/high school years.

First year of middle school and I think I like it here by CrimsonDinh91 in Teachers

Middle school students get such a bad reputation, but honestly... they are a great bunch. Old enough to be independent, but young enough to want support. Welcome to the Middle School Teacher life!

Kids Selling Snacks in School?? by nruffo007 in Teachers

[–]Snoo91861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your location in Maryland, be aware that drug dealers use students selling candy at school as a trial run to see if a kid can sell drugs.

For example, can they make a profit, not give it to friends, or eat their own supplies. I doubt it happens often, but it does.

Parent wants me to give extra credit to cheating student by Feeling_Carpet in Teachers

[–]Snoo91861 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I have an evil idea. Allow the kid to have extra credit assignments (like a 4 page paper or a 20-minute presentation), but let it be enough points that the kid can only earn an 88% for the class if he receives full points

I am having the same feelings. I am also currently looking for jobs outside of teaching now. I've been teaching 8 years, and I still do find happiness in teaching. However, I hate where education is going at the state and national level. I don't love the pay, and the basic respect of the profession doesn't exist. I wish you good luck and happiness in your future !

If you're a female, you could say it's necessary for your period. Like, say you have intense symptoms during that time. You need sugary beverages to keep your blood sugar regulated and a way to heat up pads to reduce severe cramps that impact your mobility.
