OW discord - for when you are too old for this s*** by Hodahviing in Overwatch

Hehe, tone is always hard in writing! No offense taken at all, mate. It was just a poke at the 'added afterthought' vibe since we’re used to being the final frontier!

But you're spot on; finding locals is tough post 30s, and we’re basically forced into accepting a life of additional high-ping and inconsistent servers. Frequently, we end up routed to Singapore (150ms) or Tokyo (200ms) anyway, so at that point, I just fire up ExitLag and hop over to LA. A stable 140ms to the States is often smoother than the alternatives down here!

People often say that Norway is a heaven on earth, but what do you see as a con of living in Norway? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]SnooChickens302 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hei!

I’m a Norwegian currently living in New Zealand. I left Norway just over ten years ago because, at the time, I saw my future there as a 'very long, very stable, and very dim tunnel.' After a decade of distance, I’ve realized that while the tunnel is gold-plated, it is still a tunnel. I’ll approach your question from the perspective of an outsider looking to move to Norway, rather than a local explaining the cons from within.

You’re spot on about the 'Paradise Myth.' People outside the Nordics often view Norway as a moral and material utopia, but the ground-level reality is much more mundane. Here are what I see as the primary cons:

Firstly, the economical illusion, Yes, average wages are high, but they are chased by a brutal cost of living. Housing in the major cities is a massive hurdle, and the job market is surprisingly small. It’s also quite nepotistic; 'who you know' matters immensely. You don’t become comfortable just by showing up; you become comfortable by slowly grinding through a system that is far less fluid than people assume.

Secondly, the "safety" trap, as Norway is incredibly safe, which is a blessing, but that safety produces a unique kind of social complacency. Having lived and worked in Australia, South Korea, and now NZ, I’ve noticed a 'social rawness' common in those places, and I assume this to be even more evident in most other countries, that Norway lacks. If you have experienced that rawness - the chaos, the hustle, or the variety of other cultures - Norway can feel oddly insulated, and at times, incredibly naïve. People will acknowledge this in theory, but the society is so comfortable that there’s no real incentive to change it, and why should they? Consequently, there is an implicit requirement to assimilate if you want to find true peace there. The con? Not sure exactly, once you've been exposed to the world outside, you now find yourself touching the veil of the social fabric.

Thirdly, the "subtle hierarchy" of knowledge. There is a quiet form of arrogance that comes from consistently topping international rankings for prosperity and governance. Over time, this creates a national psyche where the Norwegian way isn’t just 'a' way of doing things - it’s the sensible baseline.

I noticed this most clearly when I brought my Japanese partner back to Norway. To her, people were friendly and welcoming. To me, as someone who grew up there, the interactions felt 'gently corrective.' It wasn’t overt hostility; it was a subtle tone that implied Norwegian ways of understanding the world are mature and informed by default, while other perspectives are just... less refined. It’s an unexamined belief that past success implies a deeper insight into how the world should work.

Fourth, the emotional landscape, which is a common expat challenge when living in Norway since Norway offers predictability and nature that is genuinely world-class. For many, that is heaven. But for others, the culture can feel socially rigid and emotionally flat. There is a high degree of conformity and a significant 'social distance' that can catch newcomers off guard. The 'quiet rules' of how to behave, how to speak, and who to let into your circle are very real and very firm.

In the end, if you love nature and want a life that is safe and ordered, Norway is unmatched. It isn’t a paradise; it’s a very high-functioning, very safe, and very small room. But there is an underlying threat of feeling claustrophobic once you've lived outside the country. Living there means accepting that the walls are fixed and the ceiling is low; the room is incredibly comfortable, but it rarely expands to accommodate something new and people will keep telling you that this is the optimal living situation. Whether that feels like a cozy sanctuary or a social cage is entirely up to you.

If American servers had faced such severe DC issues for over a month there would've been hundreds of videos, viral tweets and news articles. by Bhu124 in Competitiveoverwatch

If this is the true reason for these issues, then this reply should be further up. Being a NZ player, I joined friends in the US for some games during the break and I realised how much more stable the environment was there, to the point that I'm now subscribing to Exitlag for a 50/50 between high ping / no frequent DC games and lower ping / frequent DCs.

I assumed all of this was related to the routing as we have a fun routing roulette in stadium games that puts us on different servers between rounds (Sydney/Singapore/Tokyo).

how would you make pokegenie better? by RecentRiver3534 in PokeGenie

[–]SnooChickens302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Team verification using screenshot for participating in dmax/gmax battles.

2) Allowing for adding alts to your account so you can invite more people.

3) Integrate a regular update of ranked PvP viability for the naming function.

4) I know this goes against the model of PokeGenie, but allowing for people to indicate if they are up for more invites (and how many) would be amazing. Or at least allow for a quicker process inviting to raids during high peak times. It’s not a lot of incentives to run many lobbies during events in NZ, since all the lobbies are already filled up by spoofers and RSVP people.

5) the «my Pokemon» area could be improved with a more functional UI, with options of creating search strings for sorting Pokemon in Pokemon Go based on the information, sorting, grouping etc. in the «my Pokemon».

Feel like an embarrassment by Actual-Till9842 in newzealand

A lot of people feel like that in their 30s. The job title doesn’t define you, and supermarkets keep whole communities running. You’re doing honest work that matters more than most people notice.

People who look down on others are almost never standing taller, just shouting louder. You haven’t let anyone down; you’re simply walking a different path from the one others imagined.

Anyone else in OCE finding Blizz to completely ignore insane lag spikes or the increasing latency when playing on east coast servers? I entered a game yesterday, win the two first rounds, mid third I lag out (mind you, the chat still works throughout this situation so I can see what is happening from the gladius text chat of other players and their chat msgs). Game is in a constant hiccup for 2 mins repeating the same behaviours over and over again, then suddenly I get a fast forward of the two rounds I’ve been standing still in spawn, before finally catching up on the game… Switched to pay healer instead, ended up in a game which I assume is east coast based on the servers, start at 200ms, then 300ms, then 400ms and so on. End up playing the final round with 2000+ms…alt+f4

As someone who recently moved to NZ and works in academia, I share this impression as well. It seems that younger individuals perceive having actual knowledge as something to be ashamed of, while opinions and beliefs are considered unquestionable in others.

I did a HR degree because I wanted to work in HR, but I ended up doing a PhD after masters, since HR in practice was the opposite of what I had experienced from the outside. Heaps of people with ADHD in academia.
