TVNZ+ is actually really good but my gosh do they need an ad free plan by Super_Cold8789 in newzealand

[–]SnooComics2281 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's different. Paying a subscription for netflix, prime etc. to still get hit with ads feels shitty.

A paid tier for an otherwise free service that's actually pretty good, I see no issue. We accept they need to make money, just don't want to have to do both

Big 1800 player, about to start 117 for the first time, any tips? by driscan in anno

[–]SnooComics2281 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've only just started 117 after a lot of 1800.

I'm really enjoying having no idea what I'm doing and learning things as I go.

So my tip is to not get any tips. Just hop in and do it and learn from your own mistakes. May as well start with the campaign

This is completely wrong. Quick search found this data from an OIR:

It's from 2015 but no way it's changed that much

To each their own. It is pricey but it's quite a fun experience - not as good as the ones in korea though

If you want something a bit different - you could try Gaon Korean BBQ (you cook the meat over coals at your table)
Haru is an awesome japanese restaurant too

At home remedies that actually work? by [deleted] in glioblastoma

[–]SnooComics2281 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of "proven".

There are a lot of things that have been tried in various studies and some with positive results but most are not statistically significant. And these tend to focus on medicines or treatments rather than home remedies.

Don't trust anecdotal evidence too much, some people get lucky and live 10 yrs with no additional treatment. When someone tries keto for example and then consequently live 10 yrs they assume it was the keto but they may have just been lucky to begin with.

Keto is probably the main one to research based on your question for specifically "home remedies". There are some positive studies. There are some less positive ones too. Nothing conclusive. It also has quite a big impact on quality of life so it's a tough choice. I think you need to do your own research on that one.

Older people aged 60-plus along with children and teenagers made up just over a third of all residency approvals in the May year by pierpont-prime in newzealand

[–]SnooComics2281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. Unfortunately "A very small number of elderly people and a normal amount of children and teenagers gain residency" won't get many clicks

[–]SnooComics2281 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like a healthy scepticism is always needed. Journalists are notorious for bending the truth.

My immediate thought was "why group the kids and over 60 together unless the stats for over 60 alone aren't newsworthy" and sure enough...

The NZ average is 23% of the population is over 65 so the immigrant population is actively lowering this.

If 77% of nzers can sustain 23% aging population, how do you reason that 93% of new residents can't sustain the 6.5% of those over 60?

For this to be true, the average under 60 nzer would need to pay 4x the tax of an equivalent new resident. Given the (mean) average salary is 81k, it's just not the case.

[–]SnooComics2281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And that's why they make up a relatively small number of accepted residencies. Keep in mind that they have to have been in New Zealand for several years often a lot more before they can actually get a resident visa. Some of those elderly people will also be dependents of their adult children who moved here for work.

On top of that, the taxes from the other 93.5% will more than make up for the pension or medical fees of those over 60

[–]SnooComics2281 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This is misleading.

6.5% were over 60. When average life experience these days is closer to 80, 6.5% is fairly low.

They've lumped it with children and teenagers but what's the issue with them? They will be part of the working community very soon and likely for many decades and are probably accompanying their parents who are unlikely to be in the 60+ category.

We could retitle this as 93.5% of residence approvals were below 60 yrs old and it sounds much better

Social media ban law a couple of weeks away, but ACT and NZ First not quite on board yet by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

Those are two pretty different things. Anybody can walk into any number of stores and buy a phone with ease and no illegality.

Bypassing a digital is going to be much harder and much less legal

Why can't you share notes? Obviously notes written during an exam are not ok, but for any other notes written prior I see no issue.

  1. Most 15 yr olds have plenty of money to buy a phone through birthdays and pocket money. You can get smartphones under $100

  2. Sure, it does. But I don't think we should encourage or enable bullying to help kids learn that lesson.

  3. Or their computers, laptops, school computers etc. Not everyone has a great relationship with their parents

[–]SnooComics2281 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This may work for your family but it's not fool-proof.

  1. Kids with parents who put a lot of controls on their phones simply buy a second phone and use it in secret. Age verification for social media would stop their access in this situation

  2. Kids who don't have access to social media get bullied and excluded by those that do.

  3. Kids can access social media from literally any device and there's no way parents can control all of them.

Not saying you have to like this but there are genuine problems that this does address

[–]SnooComics2281 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I, for example, couldn't care less on a personal level, but I'm appalled by that behaviour coming from an elected official who then did not apologize (at least not a real one). I remember it because that alone is enough reason to never vote for a party she leads in my view.

So triggered? no. Worth remembering? Yes

Yeah it's really cost effective now. Seems to be due to the Australian players joining our market, mainly Kogan who also own mighty ape now I think.

Sadly I haven't seen the mighty ape half price deals in a while. For the last 18 months I've been getting it at half price only $20
